JR, yes. I was watching a guy react to the Moodies' "The Story in Your Eyes," which I love so much. At one point he cut the music and just read the lyrics back to us. I pointed out to him how young Justin was when he wrote that song. Justin was already a profound songwriter at such a young age. His wife Marie, who has been married to Justin for 50 years, said she was attracted to his depth and that there are still parts of him that she loves but doesn't quite understand.

Yes, the record label expected a modern interpretation of Dvorak's New World Symphony. One guy saved it from being canned when they heard it. Thankfully! It was supposed to be a vehicle to showcase the "new" stereo sound. 😁

@@deborahmillar-jervis5916 mostly an American thing, I'm from Haiti so from day one I listen to different music and knew who the artist were. Plus radio was lest segregated when I was coming up.

He did write the song at age 19. But it was when he was sent satin sheets as a present. He said it’s about love that’s out of your reach. But I feel you can read anything into it, which I believe makes a great song.

That entire year probably ranks as THE best in the last century for music. I can't think of a better year although 1968 comes very close. It's a gradual downhill course from there with a few exceptions.

We had ten successive years of incredible music of every genre.

I agree. It's such a shame that it took so long for them to get inducted into the Hall of Fame. Ray Thomas deserved to enjoy that moment just as much as anyone else in the group.

Pure angst.

I've heard and deeply felt the pain and sorrow in his expression of those lyrics many times over the years. I have been in and out of love at various points during those times. Looking back now, I much prefer the times I was not in love when experiencing this music. The emotion expressed has more purity, I think, when uncorrupted by feelings of love for another, especially considering the fact that all those lovers are gone now, off living their lives wherever they may be. And yet I can feel this music and soak myself in the heartache and longing of the lyrics, and feel the pure beauty untarnished. This song is truly a work of art. Without it, my life would have been less rich.

Listening to the "Oh how I love you" has, to me, always been his shouting his love to the heavens. It's as if he puts his entire soul into declaring his love. The whole piece wraps around the theme about the "love of my life". Powerful yet romantic.

It gives me goosebumps every time and I have heard this song countless times.

There was much innovation around this period 1967... the mellotron features prominently on this and many other Moody Blues songs but there is orchestration which was a major part of their concept album...Days Of Future Passed. I would suggest playing it through to understand it better. This version of Nights In White Satin is from the LP, which includes the “poetry” at the end, spoken by Mike Pinder, who also plays the mellotron.

I was 10 years old when I first heard this song at my cousin's house. I was hooked on the Moody Blues from that day forward. Hard to believe that was 53 years ago... If you want to listen to more Moody Blues, try "Tuesday Afternoon"...another of their great songs.

An what an album it was and is. It really was a milestone.

lauren smith Ray Thomas was the one with the enchanting sound of the flute. He played the with an amazing sound on several songs of The Moody Blues over the years. He wrote songs, sang and played other instruments as well.

Right. Those good old days when a generation of kids grew up having the good fortune to hear a great, wide variety of new and interesting music and now look back thinking the music they listened to back then was the only good music ever made. How sad. What happened to those kids?

These kinds of bands were still relatively few in the day. The genre is progressive rock, a genre made up of bands that did complex music requiring lots of talent, most of them from people with classical training. There were still lots of bands made up of people of much more limited musical virtuosity or just wanting to make simpler music. The other Prog Rockers were really diverse in the sounds they created, experimental in their work. YES, King Crimson, Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, and prog rock in general were my taste but as it takes time to build music like this it takes time to absorb it. You listen to this over and over to enjoy the depth of thought, the complex pulse and composition, the unusual instrumentation, the experimental sounds. Doesn't mean pop and other kinds of rock aren't good or done by people with talent. In fact it does stand out against the average music of the era, but I'd argue the current pop era still has a tone of great music in it. Music that makes you think. Music that's beautiful, music that emotes. I guess waht I'm saying is, it's all good, and Moody Blues for instance stands out because it is unique now, was unique then.

I think the line that gets me is "Bedsitter people look back and lament, another day's useless energy spent" possibly because that's how many young - and not so young - people lived, especially when starting work. I started work in 1974 and lived in a bedsitter, no tv, no phone, 2 bar electric fire for heating, shared bathroom. It was tough because inflation and tax were very high, but it was pretty much the norm so we didn't consider ourselves poor or deprived.

I spent many a night in the moon light back on the farm, If you're out there long enough you can start to make out colors when your eyes get fully adjusted.

It is. Jim Morrison, from the Doors did some entries like that. It creates an additive mood of wanting to transport to another world of bliss. Another, cheaper more commercial way, was acid rock. Even the Beatles wrote music, like 'Lucy in the sky, with Diamonds'

Really? It's true that Justin' Hayward's vocal is one for the ages. The most moving performance of this song I've ever seen happened about two years ago in Dallas, Texas. Justin was on his solo tour with his small band. Justin had lost his voice temporarily to laryngitis and had mostly recovered.. But he found suddenly that he couldn't sing the soaring chorus for "Nights." Suddenly, out of nowhere, the audience started singing, "Yes I love you, oh how I love you!" for him. Justin continued to sing the verses and the audience sang the choruses back to him until the song was done. When it was over, Justin stepped back from the microphone with tears in his eyes and I was crying myself. That's the power of this song as a shared experience.

Red is Gray, and Yellow White, but we decide which is right (and which is an illusion)" When those words are spoken at the beginning of Nights in White Satin, the emphasis is on "...but WE decide...". When spoken again after the song ends, the emphasis is "...and WHICH IS an illusion?..." I believe it refers to the fact that colors appear different in sunlight than they do in moonlight. Color is not objective, not absolute. It is more subjective than we realize. By extension, 'things' are more subjective than we often realize. But that's a whole other can of worms.
