Great video! My friends had a hard time getting into the roleplay aspect but I'm happy to see others embracing it. When I started, I worked primarily with the Diamond Frogs in Lan Wang. I would smuggle weapons to bring down "the man" but would never trade slaves - until I did a covert transportation mission in which I didn't notice the cargo was slaces until I was already handing it in. I broke my own moral code and in my anger, I lashed out - I took on an assassination mission of a local politician to clear my conscience but failed horribly. I was stuck in a prison 100ly away, the furthest I'd ever been, and used it as a opportunity to move on from working with slave trading thugs - even if I wasn't trading them myself, I was helping an evil that I couldn't agree with. After some me-time in the asteroid fields, I pledged myself to Winters and got to work fighting Torval to rid the galaxy of slavery. To make some side cash, I worked with Federal factions until they offered me a Specs Op job. It was good money so I took it on, not knowing the mission would be to destroy passenger liners from another Federal faction. Even the Feds weren't above taking innocent lives. I decided to get away from the corruption of the bubble. I decked out a Diamondback and set off for Colonia and beyond. Even though civilization is a cesspool now, maybe our colonys in the future will have a better chance of peace and fairness for all. Maybe I'll come back a better person with a clear mind of how I can improve our state of affairs - but for now, it's just me and the wonders of the galaxy. Fly safe, commanders o7

I always laughed when I failed in saving all 8 hostages in a liberate mission. I accidentally kill the type 6 hauling them, with only like 5 hostages collected. You can't turn them in as a partial completion. My rational has been utterly awful sitting there back at the dock, pondering on what to do. "Maybe someone will find them" as I jettison them inside the hangar, ignoring the prompt informing they'll be destroyed. Or "hey, look I'm not going to kill you to save my conscience. Soooo, I guess I'll sell you on the black market. You're welcome."

I made the money to buy it by fitting a pirate python, blasting cargo ships's thrusters , and ripping out all their low temperature diamonds Then selling them to the black market. The income to buy that ship will never appear on any space tax documents, hence the name I did a small portion of slave trading with my conda, wasn't my thing. I personally use auto dock for when I'm busy doing something else, like deciding the next station or system I'll jump to or checking if I have any bounties to claim at that system, stuff like that. While manual docking might be faster, it requires 100% of my attention, and it might be more productive to let it happen automatically while I do something else. But since launching is so fast, I never use auto launch anymore.

In the tv show Black Sails, there was a pirate Captain who was a former slave. At one point they hit a massive haul and needed a place to keep it safe. The nearby fort was the obvious choice but badly needed repairs. With so many on the island with stuffed pockets finding laborers to fix the fort was impossible. At one point the pirate captains closest friend had to make a hard choice and use slaves to fix the fort and lied by omission to the pirate captain about a certain ships who had precious cargo which ended up being full of slaves. One of my favorite parts of the entire show that really showed the complexity of morality that the character who despised slavery the most was put into an extremely tough position where he himself had to use slaves for labor. Important to note that they paid and freed those slaves and never even fixed the fort but instead converted a huge cache of gold into a more precious material that was easier to move and hide. I've wanted to model my commander after this captain and having the option to fight against slavery through multiple ways would be incredibly cool.

i only hauled imperial slaves once, and it was by complete accident, but i went on to travel halfway across the bubble to sell them at an imperial-controlled port under one of the imperial powers as for my takes on slavery in elite dangerous, i'm sure that the laws regarding imperial slaves don't affect you as they affect the TREATMENT of slaves, not the HANDLING of slaves, as you are merely a contractor transporting goods from one station to the next and not an end-user. I believe that when you, as a commander, are purchasing imperial slaves, you're not allowed to make use of them, you can only transport them and sell them to another market or deliver them to the customer that ordered them, this customer or market having gone through all the stipulations, regulations and paperwork required to be allowed to legally do this. that is the end-user is contractually obliged to respect the slave's rights, with immense financial and legal repercussions should those rights be infringed. if something happens in transit, it's circumstances that are outside of the customer's or seller's control and therefore cannot be enforced upon. Another set of legal rights i believe imperial slaves have is when their time of servitude is over and they can get into contact with the agency or company or whatever is the entity in charge of dealing with slaves, that entity is legally obligated to provide and pay for the transport of now former imperial slaves back to their respective homeworlds, or provide the funds to do so on their own or start a new life at their new world or even simply continue living with their owner.

I always have a hard time performing morally dubious actions in simulations. Be it Fallout or Mass Effect I end up feeling guilty performing what would be considered evil deeds in the real world. When I try to be a bad guy I just end up turning into, at most, an antihero. In the end, there is a hypothesis that the actions we take in a simulated world, one free of real-world consequences, is who we truly are as a person. 🤔
@boigercat

I think thats only true for individuals who cant emotionally disconnect from their in game actions. Like how you feel bad doing immoral things in game, there are definitely the opposite and then you have someone like Geist who can easily role play and decide what his characters should feel and then like a actor respond to situations by the rules set for your characters. Playing dnd for example, You basically get rewarded for playing your character by the personality set before the game started. That requires making on the spot choices that go against your true person.

I honestly love the ethos of the Federation and it's "no free lunch" work ethic. The Empire always defends its slave trade in humanitarian terms as a "safety net" for poor and incompetent people, while a patriotic Federal citizen would just see Imperial Slaves as a bunch of beggars and parasites. I figure my character on Hackworth, who owns several ships and almost never loses money, would be contemptuous of these Imperial deadbeats who took the easy way out and sold themselves into slavery. He's probably glad to help them get the heck off the station where they are just taking up space and food and oxygen.

I don't sell the slaves, I release them at one of my factions stations where they are assisted with finding their family and are helped to get a start in society as a free person. I don't shoot to kill, I want the slaves to live. Until quite recently I had 14,000, 000 cr bounty on me but it was claimed by another commander when I lost to him in a consentual duel to the death against his cutter. I don't think selling yourself into slavery can be considered any sort of safety net, least of all from poverty. That seems more like an oversight by the devs or in lore, a dirty euphemism used by imperials to diminish what would actually happen, history tells another story of how slaves are usually treated. Working as a slave I can't imagine how you'd be able to rebuild your life easily, I would imagine slaves would have the same difficulties rebuilding their lives, that actual slaves had in the real world, using the states as a real world example( post civil war). Or, would encounter similar problems former prisoners face today, reintegrating into society after paying their debt. Sex slaves today (even in the US) face similar difficulties and hopelessness when it comes to escaping slavery or paying back their "debtor". You'd basically have to start with nothing again. I don't imagine you would be able to keep your job, home, possessions after becoming a slave, especially after being removed from where you live and being shipped to somewhere else in the galaxy, with no money and no contacts, possibly not even speaking the same language when you get to wherever your pilot/slaver took you . We haven't even considered the racial and ethnic implications here (notice the galaxy seems to have very few black people in charge with no black power players and only one black engineer). Slavery tended to fall toward ethnic divisions to determine who was a slave and who wasn't. Who was allowed to be the master and who was the servant usually had some foundations in race and ethnicity, and other racist bullshit. Also can't imagine most slaves being treated "nicely" given the countless examples you gave of them being treated as equivalent to cargo. Personally I find slavery morally abhorrent and won't ever touch them in game EVER. Too many other easy ways to make money. I won't even fuck with Etienne since I don't know what the fuck he's doing with those occupied escape pods. Slavery's inclusion in Elite is sorta disgusting, especially since the moral opposite of freeing slaves isn't presented as a mission or activity type and the pilot is super far removed from the realities of it, turning them into an item on a manifest. It seems like a missed opportunity by the devs. You engage with power play, but you can't setup an underground railroad. You can't buy slaves to set them free somewhere else. Even if it is a game, it's still gross, especially the way people joke and fantasize about it... But I guess that's more telling of the people playing and the choices they would make given the opportunity. There are quite a few studies in ethics linking peoples play style in games reflecting their level of ethics in every day life. One example looked at ceos and other executives cheating in games such as golf or squash and exhibiting similar behaviors in the work place, lying or significantly embellishing their job applications, or using deception and manipulation in the work place to get ahead, more so their those that didn't choose to cheat. So not entirely sure if in game behavior and rational is too dissimilar from the choices people make in everyday life. Not saying that everyone who picks the robber would necessarily go out and rape, murder and steal, but when tested and presented with ethical dilemmas I wonder what they'd probably choose, especially with smaller situations where they might be able to act with some degree of impunity. The sandbox in Elite is interesting, especially with regards to the ethical and moral implications its presents but with alot of issues in game, Frontier doesn't seem to look at them too deeply. I think if they did they'd really have something special, especially if CMDR's were confronted more with the morality of their decisions and we got to see the human costs and scale of things in the universe. Maybe one day if we get space legs we'll be able to get more up close and personal with the universe and people can reconsider the stories the want to tell in game.

10 seconds in and you're talking like some high school student who is beginning to learn what the fuck slavery is. Lets be fair, current societal standards view slavery in any form as wrong. But if that wasn't the case? Then slavery isn't wrong because society would determine it so. Now when we talk about the KINDS of slavery that exist, that's a topic in itself. In E:D specifically, you have slaves and Imperial slaves. Imperial slaves are guess what? Still free people. In the Imperial society, they still have their rights and liberties as if they were not. An Imperial slave is bound by contract, not by force like a typical slave. Something else to mention too is that, Imperial Slaves, dictated by Imperialist societies, are to be taken care of with the fullest of abilities; Food, water, shelter, income, etc.. When it comes to slavery in the Empire, most places have slavery outlawed outright, but Imperial slavery still being standard and normal. How do you become an Imperial Slave? When you owe someone money but you cant pay them back, you work for them by contract. In turn, they by law are to take care of you. And by law, no Imperial slave can remain a permanent slave (because at some point, they have to be unbound by that contract), and must have an "end date." For whatever it is that they signed the contract for, their work for whom they owe will reward them what is agreed upon. You want to buy property from someone, but cant afford it? Work for them to obtain the said property: Imperial slavery. Bought a new Sidewinder and now need to pay off a loan? Work for em to pay it off. All the while by law, you must be taken care of because you're still a Imperial citizen. When it comes to straight up slavery, that implies you're NOT a Imperial citizen, of which case, you're just a slave, which funny enough? Most places in the Empire, or probably all Empire controlled locations, have slavery outlawed. I say most because there is this one particular leader in the Empire that does not quite take good care of even Imperial slaves, and she has an attitude like a bitter old lady (you can probably guess who I'm referring to). Now lets talk about slavery in the Federation. Forget to pay your bills? Lose your property. Go bankrupt? Sorry, no can help. Owe someone money? Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do. Fact is, most Federal citizens are impoverished, littered with crime and poverty. In the Federation, you always owe someone money at any given point. That? Is slavery, and that isn't talked about enough (going off real life that is), but since this is a video game, I'll keep it in this topic. The Federation is run by corporations, corporations that have no desire for anything other than to make money. Nickel and dime if you will... because they must, because they wish, because they demand it. It should be of no surprise that in the lore of E:D, many Federal colonies switched to the Empire because the Empire was willing to help them grow, expand, and survive, while the Federation just sent them off and expected them to fend for themselves. And when the colony became big enough, or noteworthy enough, the Federation then would send support. But by that time, the said colony would no doubt have had plenty of offers to join the Empire, or the Alliance... or a thought of just going independent because clearly, the Feds didn't care all too much about them. Edit: So I continued on, and noticed you went into what I said already... XD Anyway, something to add to Slavery A: How do they get home? Easy... sell them to another Imperial station. Anywhere else, then you turn an Imperial slave into a outright slave.

Surely robot technology in this era should ensure human slaves are not required. I just bought this game, going to start on Friday with a new 4k TV. Elite was one of my favourite games for ZX Spectrum 48k back in the 80's, if the gameplay is excellent the graphics don't matter. Elite in simple vector graphics needed human imagination.

We are kidding ourselves if we believe that slavery, if permitted in this day and age, wouldn't be a normalized industry practiced by countries we know well. My example, India. India is a signatory on the 'Universal Declaration of Human Rights document which outlines that it will not practice slavery, nor commence in economic agreements with countries that do. Yet the Dalite, are in fact slaves. Cursory searches will reveal story after story and there are entire websites dedicated to freeing their slaves. But because India has a Caste system of society, we look the other way. Well that, and the fact they are an emerging market. Slavery exists, and it's a fucking joke to believe that we will put a human life ahead of corporate and economic supremacy.

I even made my character look as repulsive as his trade, and the Keelback he flies has seen better days. I was able to finance a Krait MKII through buying illicit slaves for like 1700cr in one station and selling them to a military dictatorship colony in a neighboring system for 17,000cr a piece. I repeated that process until their entire stock of slaves was exhausted.

To leave women and children alive, to fend for themselves, was a far more grueling death from starvation for there were no men to hunt and gather food for them. Slavery was thus, considered a merciful act of compassion for the survivors, integrating them into your own society. So you see, slavery can be a good thing.
