Gonna be honest rad. Its a good thing you didn't rank switch axe lower than charge blade, or I would have had to hunt you down... To give you a very stern talking to,
To be honest I thought you were going to place light bowgun lower. It's my favorite weapon. If not for Pierce Rapidfire and some sticky builds I feel like everyone would probably crap on it too excuse me... I appreciate how your tier list is a fun level tier list, and not a "what is absolute meta" tier list. XD For me, having tried every weapon out over a course of every Monster Hunter I've played I agree with you and Longsword. But my heart belongs to my LBG and has belonged to it since Freedom Unite. X)
Gunlance/switch axe Most Everything else Lance, bow, light bowgun I’ve tried all the weapons in mhw, I like most of them, but the bottom tier I have here just never felt right
So what, SNS is the true weapon and the lances get stuck with being the worst. Fight me on that. The pokey sticks suck. Who tf wants to poke a monster to death. I've mained almost every weapon in the Monster Hunter series but never in a million years will I go near those God awful disgraces.
Lol. I remember trying to fit in binoculars in MHFU when I was still a kid. Trying to scout monster patterns. Spoiler: it did not give me any information whatsoever.
Let's be real, I am a gunlance main and I love Rurikhan's channel. Whenever someone comes on his stream and says they became a gunlance main thanks to him he often will apologize for it.
I like the idea of gunlance but that weapon has no synergy with any of its own kit. There's always a portion of the kit that is absolutely useless in each version.
@@legefy False. I don’t have a switch, but in MHW you can play 3 main styles as far as builds go. You can run melee-full burst, poke, bang till empty, reload, repeat, or you can play all shelling and used charged shell attacks. I would say it’s the most advanced weapon as far as different build/play styles go
@@brandonkallhoff7879 You don't understand his comment at all. He is right, some of the moves are useless depending on the shelling type. Nobody is going to single shell and poke shell with a normal gunlance and nobody is going to use full burst with a wide Gunlance or even long. Doing so heavily reduces your DPS and they made the weapon intentionally like that, which i don't like. If you're not playing all shelling types it's always a gamble that the next weapon they introduce in the weapon tree is the shelling type you play. ''I would say it’s the most advanced weapon as far as different build/play styles go'', and on a sidenote, this is also not correct. Bowguns have far more builds and playstyles than Gunlance could ever have.
They are the most similar to each other that any two weapons. Fade slashing through attacks isn't much different than tackling through attacks. And both need to build up to their final attack helm breaker and true/ rage slash.
Yeah I kinda can't believe how much he dismissed the range weapons. For Generation 5, HBG/LBG/BG are the highest DPS in the game (though im sure you knew that).
This is what I tell everyone. I’m very shitty at the weapon despite it being my main. It takes a lot of practice to do anything close to what you’ll see in a speedrun. The simplest moveset, but the hardest to pull off. Unless you dabble in CDraw like myself
@@Luca-fw4ss I don't know your playstyle, and i'm not an GS main (i'm IG main) but a true good GS main is very skillful and cool at the same time. There's a vid demonstrating it. GS mains have all my respect.
Well, the Lances mains are as rare as the the HH mains… and they like each other as "support" mains… my best friend is a HH main and he loves supports and healing everybody everywhere on the map
@@bigmilk13_ as a person that plays glaive and charge blade I agree mainly because those two aren't really as complex as people make them out to be But great sword takes a good bit of skill to use
Your opinion on the Lance and Gunlance is so funny to me because I remember deciding to try a weapon other than Greatsword for the first time, tried Lance, and thought to myself "okay, this is not bad", then saw the Gunlance and thought "...but what if it went BOOM" and have been in love ever since. Literally no thoughts tho
Well the main problem with the gun Lance other than the heat meter they put on it is how little sharpness it has and how fast it dulls compared to the normal Lance. My take on the Lance is it mostly is used and developed to be the juggernaut of the weapons, high defense, decent offense, and as long as you keep moving you can keep the shield up and take all the hits, the gun Lance seems to take away from that by loosing sharpness too fast to where if any monster has armor you have to lower the shield to attack and leave yourself open while you have the agro, so the only way you could do major damage is by sacrificing someone else to agro and blasting it a few times than come in at the side and attack until you reclaim agro
Man it's hard to see great sword as braindead when all the biggest plays I've enjoyed watching is when a GS has perfect positioning for fully charged hits
Regarding the IG (as an IG main) I completely agree with you regarding the kinsects. Especially in 4U that system was just too complex and grindy. I have to say, though, that in the fifth gen, and in particular with Rise, the kinsects upgrade system was extremely simplified. In Rise you just buy a kinsect and you’re done. No upgrades, no monster’s materials, just good ol’ money. With that, you can simply focus on choosing a kinsect for a specific hunt, without worrying about crafting and upgrading it. Also, for cutting type kinsect, the kinsect will automatically inherit the element from your glaive, and that works very well with assist type kinsects.
As a HH main i almost switched main during rise due to the murder of its mechanics. But even then my friends say I play HH wrong, I pick horns based on what I want. I support the team by killing the monster, teammates getting buffs was just a bonus.
same here. idk how to feel tbh. but im worried they see the success of how they made it appealing to almost everyone who didnt like it before and only keep it that way. The old one was weird but had some really cool ideas.
Same, I used HH at the beginning but have since moved on to using SnS, in its place, HH just lost allot of its complexity with what they did to it in Rise, it’s just not as fun to use, I can understand them wanting to try and get more people into the weapon, but did they have to nuder the main draw of the weapon which is playing a string of songs to dish out dmg to the monster, then encoring them to get a bigger boost and continue the damage, I just think they took trying to make it more accessible a bit too far.
@jzillacon While I agree that more accessibility would’ve been good, I don’t think *any* weapon should be completely reworked to the extent HH was. It’s effectively a different weapon now, and I can see that being really devastating to people who’ve been maining it for over a decade. So yes, accessibility is good. But weapons should retain their identities no matter what imo. I honestly believe this is the same as just axing the HH and replacing it with something else.
@@SuperRADLemon Also a gunlance main, I’m not the best at it but if you disregard the sharpness gauge, just go for the freelance play style and do whatever you want as that is the most fun for me. What drawed me into the weapon was the explosions, so I’m sure as heck am going to use them. I played aerial gunlance in gen u and did the jump into full burst a lot of the time, and in rise blast dash is so much fun to use. It’s not a weapon for everyone but if it still interests you a little bit, it’s worth giving it a shot I’d say.
@@SuperRADLemon Yea, devs just don’t know how to balance the thing properly at all, GL really got the short end of the stick, sure it’s fun to play, but it got completely screwed over in allot of other areas.
LS is super strong, I used it to beat lagacrust easily, it's such a weak and unlikeable water monster and by far the lowest tier monster, I think jyratodus is the best water monster it's $$$tier
It hurt seeing you put the insect glaive in the “is this Dauntless?” tier as an insect glaive player (World only) but I’ve watched your history video on it and I can’t say I don’t agree with how annoying kinsects seemed before gen 5. Probably one of my biggest fears of trying out the old games but it’s more of an excuse to use some of the other weapons some more, I guess.
Just watch gaijins video about how to get the perfect kinsect, its not that hard, you just need 1.000.000 only to realize that you did a miss input halfway through and start over again (that also includes farming the mats for your glaive) But seriously the IG was so op in 4u that it didnt even matter if your bug wasnt the greatest, you only need to worry about that at early g rank
I've been playing IG since MH4U, and it's been super fun the whole time. Sure, theres the whole mechanic of leveling up the insect, but even then it gets patched and explored through each game. Imo it's gotten better and better and deserves at least an Unga Bunga placing.
You lowered Hunting Horn's placing based on its Rise incarnation but then graded Insect Glaive based on its pre-Rise ones??? It's a lot more streamlined now, and pogoing off of Rakna to build up to a 600-damage dive on her face is dope and gives me the big unga bunga serotonin 😤 Signed a GenU LS Main who started seconding IG and Swaxe after grinding out the Feather of Mastery
The only thing I might argue about is that Insect Glaive should go up a tier to "do not play" because in Rise they've taken out the upgrading of kinsects, and that seemed to be your biggest issue with the weapon. If Hunting Horn is getting docked on the tier list for getting neutered in Rise, then Glaive should get a couple points for removing that issue with the weapon.
Nah, i use it the most but it's pretty accurately rated. Usually a mess balance-wise. Somewhat fixed in each expansion whete they slap some gimmick on top after a year or so of being underwhelming. You can't blame most of the playerbase for not wanting to put up with that bs each game.
Personally my favorite weapon is the sword and shield. I absolutely love the versatility and the maneuverability you have with it. I like how well rounded it is as a weapon. While it doesn't exceed like other weapons do in specific areas, the sns is effective enough in about every situation there is. I love weaving in and out as a monster attacks to counterattack in the small openings that happen in the quicker attacks they have and I have good combos when a monster is down and vulnerable. I adore how sns is good with both status and elemental damage. While raw damage is always all you need for the hunt, I like the utility you can get from sleep or paralysis or the amount of damage that builds up from the right element or with poison or blast.
after having never played sns i picked it up in rise and loved it with the switch skills and such. my first few zinogre hunts went super easily because i was able to just stunlock him with my shield. i never knew that it could be used to do so much stun damage but i love having the ability to effectively choose to do either blunt or severing damage with one weapon
the amount of times i’ve tried to get a 1k plus damage combo with my hammer on a knocked monster and a long sword user comes over and messes me up just by trynna fill there gauge is insane
You can like the Trip Sword all you want, but don't try and tell me that it has the highest skill ceiling. That title belongs to the Great Sword, I will accept no arguments
LS absolutely has the highest skill ceiling. Learning when to counter each monster - and when not to, and when to switch from one counter to another - is more challenging than learning when you're safe to charge up.
I got into the series because of the Insect Glaive :3 I loved having this pet companion on my arm who helped me. It felt like a pet friend you cant lose. I honestly loved the introcacy of the kinsect, too. I experimented a lot with them and used them sooo much, because I was afraid to go near the monsters for a while. I also enjoyed being able to get a good look at the monster while getting my three buffs. I was fascinated with the many options you had. I loved leveling the kinsect up to see what it evolved into next. The embarressing but funny part about that story is, that i didn't figure out the jumping mechanic until the G rank. And my mind was blown. Because suddendly I was the one mounting all the time. And i really loved that. I remember being really bummed in generations when everybody got the aerial fight style and i lost my mounting privileges to dualblades and bows a lot. It made me nearly quit because I couldnt reliable do the coolest thing in the game anymore. In rise it got a lot better for me, as the one dealing the blow that makes the monster rideable is not automatically the one who gets to mount it. (Also the cute spiders, they are awesome.) But I was sad about the Kinsects. They were just something you'd buy. And lots of them were gone until Sunbreak. I could not change their stats. The kinsects i really liked before were now no longer fitted for my playstyle. That really was a bummer. But i just stubbornly played more until i got the hang of using my favourites again. I think IG is as easy to learn as ever. You can spam combos in any order, you can jump to evade, you can jump to chase, jump to attack and can either ignore the kinsect by using an auto attacking one or use the faster ones to attack from a distance to catch a little break before getting back into combo world. Personally, the Insect Glaive and the dual blades have the most visually fascinating combat with their fluid moves and general speed. but the glaive will always win my heart because of mobility and little bug friend :3
Personally I love IG but can't get behind DB xD it's just don't working for me. Especially in rise where dB are ducking boring. You just hope and ride the back. In sunbreak You just hope, ride a back, become a blender. Ughhh
Me a gunlance main: well.. you see… you long sword players can be a bit thirsty for damage but I have to save you every time fatalis uses his flame and I have to jump infront and block it
I agree with your assessment of the Hunting Horn changes. I used to main HH, but it’s a completely different weapon now. It took me a while to put aside my hurt feelings, but once I did, I found the new HH to be fun in its own way. It might be just a beat stick now, but maybe that’s okay. That being said, Charge Blade is objectively one of the most versatile weapons with the ability to KO monsters and cut tails without settling into a niche play style.
Long sword Double long sword Long sword with a shield Wide long sword Pointy long sword Blunt long sword Music long sword Bang Bang long sword Long sword that transforms 1 Long sword that transforms 2 2 long swords taped together and a bug Trash ranged weapons
Fun fact : I started the series with MH3 on Wii, and was so amazed by the coolness of the medium bowgun character in the box manual (RIP manuals we read for hours) that I just played the whole game with the ludroth cap maxed out just for the style, despite it quickly becoming shit in comparison to other equipement, and wrecking the combo bonus of my other updated stuff. Seeing this character 1 second back on the screen just reminded me of this "Woah a cool guy with a cool gun" I experienced as a kid, and I wanted to share it x)
I love Gunlance, but I 100% agree that shelling being underpowered as all hell is the worst part of the weapon, and it's only been getting worse with time. Shelling damage just needs to be completely reworked to be based on a weapon's raw instead of a fixed amount determined by a level. Also for the love of god add elemental/status shells
Sns main whose recently taken up LS, thanks to Dear Gamer. He was right in saying that it feels like you’re dancing with the monster when using LS. DB is another weapon I’m looking forward to using more. I also use GS. Love the weapon and it’s dmg output but I tend to like the faster weapons.
What seems very interesting to me in alot of the tier lists is that Lance is consistently ranked fairly high and yet it consistently ranks fairly low in usage. True it seems like there are very few people that main it but not alot of people actively hate the weapon. Loved the video!
When I picked up HH as my second weapon (after bow) in MH3U, I thought it had a steep learning curve due to to amount of note combinations for each 4-7 songs. I was a corner-horn for awhile because I felt I had to memorize each song, but you really only need 2 or 3 if you have a utility song (cold/heat cancel). Now I'm actively able to hit the monsters but trying to learn monster patterns while trying to remember all the songs I think is what causes new HH players to play like I did
You will be rewarded handsomely for having IG in 4U by having your hands on one of the top 2 highest damage weapons in that game. Seriously, IG was op in 4U. One of, if not the only weapon that made Capcom so scared that they nerfed a weapon.
It may seem kinda lame, but I like the IG in older gens because of the Kinsect. It's a living creature, so it feels like it would need nectars and stuff to get stronger. That's why I was surprised when you could just buy Kinsects in Rise.
For me the most satisfying thing for me is landing a hit with a great sword and flinching, or breaking a part of a monster while the monster is in the middle of an attack,
Thinking about it, insect glaive actually could just be a glaive without the kinsect and would still be just as balanced since getting the buffs takes 3 seconds, but I dont understand how that can ruin a weapon that hard for someone
Tbh it's not that much more grinding for the upgrades for the kinsect. More than likely you'll be fighting every monster quite few times and by then you'll have the necessary materials. Also the second I saw that you could fly through the air with that weapon was the beginning of the end for me.
@@branflakes523 well yes, its still the greatest weapon, I personally dont mind the bug and with the assist type in rise, the damage it deals is not to be underestimated, but its actually kinda weird that we get stronger through some weird bug juice
Did you play MHGU's Valor HBG, it's one of the best weapons imo (and probably the most OP mainline serires weapon :)). I usually prefer HBG to LBG because mobility of HBG makes it less boring because you need to concentrate more and make more attention at how you move.
Long sword, small long swords, wide long sword, small long sword with shield, long sword with axe attached, long sword with axe and shield, teeny long sword on stick with bug, blunt long sword, musical blunt long sword, shooty long sword, semi automatic shooty long sword, big semi automatic shooty long sword, pokey long sword, shooty pokey long sword.
I immediately realized this is more of a personal list, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I fell in love with Insect glaive going into World from Freedom Unite, but then I got tired of kinsect uptime. My personal fun for the weapon died pretty fast because the kinsect felt more like a chore since it felt mandatory to keep up DPS. You can arguably say the same thing for my favorite weapon of all time, charge blade, but a reward for whipping out a ultra that KOs the monster feels like a huge nut rather than upkeeping a red kinsect moveset upgrade.
I like where you put the dual blades. And ill take this tier list even though i disagree with everything else because i like where you put the dual blades.
Yeah, I completely agree with you, in old gens monsters barely touched me, but now it's like I started learning from the bottom lmao, you need to learn the moveset and how to position to counter the monster the most effectively
Gunlance user here, I agree with you when it comes to shelling. It's an absolute shame that the most damaging way to use the weapon is forgoing it's main feature.
Lance does both impact and slicing damage. It simply choses the highest weakness value to apply its damage to, but still counts as slicing damage either way. This is why weakness exploit is always good on lance.
As a hunting horn main I do agree with some points you made particularly the way rise changes the weapon to be more simple, I liked the way it was challenging and complex to use. Great video can’t wait to see more in the feature
I can't speak to older gens than World but Insect Glaive is just below Long Sword to me. Chasing a monster into the sky or dodging something with a perfect hop feels great. The insect mechanic with buffs... Sometimes the areas you have to hit are designed poorly and the insects shouldn't have an extensive upgrade tree, but it's enjoyable overall
GL in lowest tier, time to cry. But seriously trying to use the GL in GU is really weird because of that heat gauge. Not to mention that in rise it got another shelling nerf just because and now you have to use a wirebug move with a long cooldown just to get that damage back. I dont think the developers know that the weapon really isnt that OP in the first place. Still going to use it though because I’m just built different idk.
Was laughing when you put both my mains in bottom tier XD Not sure how you couldn't love a full burst combo with a normal GL and artillery 5. A blessed weapon. Iceborne made it even better with the doubled shots from the slinger ammo. Absolutely bonkers damage output.
I use insect glaive, and personally I love it, I can dodge monsters by launching myself, and hit them midair, and I dont mind kinsects because I use blast on mine, and I do a lot of damage, also helps with buffs. You just need to train a lot to use it 😭
Hammer has become my favorite in Rise because of the parry. I am obsessed with just destroying monsters simply because they decided to run head first into me and I just stand steadfast. Its genuinely amazing
I have been trying really hard to enjoy other weapons as well but sns is just too good. Its huge variety of moves often leaves me with the impression that other weapons are basically just spamming 1-3 moves and that's it. Also the great mobility and possibility to use items instantly is something you don't appreciate until you loose it. And you don't need to deal with any kind of charging or preparation. Your weapon is ready the moment you draw your sword. The only disadvantage is its short reach which on the other hand makes the hunt to feel more personal. My only regret is the poor balance that turned it into Shield and Sword/fast hammer. Spamming Shield Bash combo followed by Spinning Reaper and Metsu every now and then isn't playstyle I personally enjoy and would love to see some improvements in the Master Rank to bring sword on pair with the shield. Hopefuly elemental damage overall will see some improvements.
I loooooove Sns for all the reasons you’ve stated above. It’s a Jack of all trades. You don’t have to worry about any gauges or meters and it doesn’t require any additional skills to make it good. Plus it’s nice and compact. I like being able to see my character and not have some big ass weapon blocking my character and her huge badunk. Sns main to the core but have dabbled a little into LS, thanks to Dear Gamer haha.
Out of all of them, I’d say heavy bow gun is the one weapon I just can’t for the life of me get into. I’ve tried and tried and just couldn’t have fun with it.
