If you're looking for an AWD EV that still has a federal tax credit and won't break the bank, VW has the answer for many of you with the new dual motor ID.4. If you get the full credit, VW's compact CUV will set you back around $18,000 less than a dual motor Model Y and a few grand less than Ford's Mach E. There's also 3 years of unlimited DC fast charging on the Electrify America network to sweeten the deal. Is the ID.4 perfect? No. But it is one of the best EVs in America right now, and it'll cost less than the "average" new car in America.

Current price of Model Y long range AWD = $59K. Current price of VW ID.4 AWD Pro S = $49K - $7.5K Federal Tax Credit = $41.5K. $17.5K cheaper to get the ID.4. The ID.4 comes with 3 years of free charging, a trailer hitch, and a retractable cover over the glass roof. Looks like the ID.4 is a winner!

I was glad to hear you say that you appreciated the sliding cover on the panoramic roof. Teslas have a lot going for them, but I've always felt they deserve more dings from reviewers for the glass roof without a cover.

As usual, great, informative review. Based on reviews and my test drive if a RWD id.4, I reserved an AWD ProS. When I spoke with my local dealer, they said that cars ordered will probably be delivered next May.

Great initial review, Alex. I've been looking forward to the introduction of the ID4 AWD. Living in the Puget Sound region our winters are typically wet rather than frozen but the nearby Cascades are a temptation for ski trips and AWD is highly recommended for trips on the "eastside" of the mountains where winter snow is more prevalent. At least on paper a RWD biased AWD configuration is ideal.

Not having to pay for charging and getting that tax credit, AND getting that cover for the roof make this a very strong value. Plus great ground clearance, if you need that.

I ordered one of these (AWD version) in May. largely based on some of the reviews but your review and that of Redline convinced me. I then drove the 2WD model and was sold over again. My AWD ID.4 won't arrive until late January early February looking forward to ownership. Thank you for a review I can use. This vehicle should serve us well here in the Southern Colorado and Northern New Mexico foothills and mountains

I've watched several of your reviews now, Alex, and this car would not normally be my choice. But that you are so incredibly comprehensive, I watched it all the way. Again. :-) You simply outpace all the reviewers I've bounced between on RU-vid. I have more to watch, as I think EV will be more me than hybrid (future-proofing). But you are the guy I'm coming to first. Thank you so much.
