The most BRILLIANT CHEAT in RACING History? Toyota Team Europe Cheating Turbo Explained

Here's a pretty famous cheating story that you might have heard about. But even if you have we are going into the depths of the famous 1995 World Rally Championship Toyota turbo cheat.
This happened in 1995, and the cheat was discovered by the FIA in the Rally Catalunya race in Spain. The cheat was committed by Toyota Team Europe, which was then Toyota's racing division in the World Rally Championship. Toyota Team Europe was racing the newly introduced Celica ST205 (successor to the very succesfull st185 and st165)
What was the cheat? Well the cheat involved FIA mandated air restrictors that were installed onto the intake side of the turbos on WRC cars at this time (they are still in use today btw). FIA decided to introduce air restrictors to the WRC in order avoid the same accidents that shut down the coolest thing in rally history just a decade earlier. Yes, Group B, was shut down in 1986 pretty much because the cars were getting too fast and the crowds too crazy. The goal of the air restrictors was to tame down the cars and keep the crowds safe.
But it is with the air restrictor that Toyota Team Europe saw the opprunity to execute it's brilliant cheat. In an example of engineering and mechanical brilliance a system that would push the restrictor out 5mm was devised. This let 25% more air into the turbo and ultimately into the engine which resulted in a power output of 30 - 50 hp. The brilliant part of the cheat was that the restrictor was in the legal position when removed from the car and in the illegal position when installed back.
It was so well made that it managed to impress the people that are there to stop cheating and enforce the rules. Max Mosley who was then president of the FIA couldn't hide his enthusiasm for the cheat:
"“It’s the most ingenious thing I have seen in 30 years of motorsport.” said Mosley. He was also very impressed with the craftsmanship:
“Inside it was beautifully made. The springs inside the hose had been polished and machined so not to impede the air which passed through. To force the springs open without the special tool would require substantial force. It is the most sophisticated and ingenious device either I or the FIA’s technical experts have seen for a long-time. It was so well made that there was no gap apparent to suggest there was any means of opening it.”
However, Mosley did what any FIA president would do, in the interest of motorsport he punished Toyota Team Europe and stripped them of all of their 1995 season points and banned them from racing in 1996.

Before they fitted the restrictor, the wide body Celica could not match the smaller Impreza and Escort Cosworth on tight rallys and also had a wider track making handling difficult in gravel rallys. The extra power brought them up to a similar performance level again

Another one, I believe from Junior Johnson, was to inflate a basketball inside the gas tank when the car went through tech. The right amount of gas goes in, then the team pops the ball and removes it, and pops the extra fuel in. Darrell Waltrip would also fill the chassis with a ton of lead shot, and cap it off with wax. Car heats up in the race, wax melts off, lead shot falls out, car is a couple hundred pounds lighter.

Cheating is pretty common in most if not all forms of motorsport. I've heard of Nascar stock cars with roll cages that act as auxiliary fuel tanks, drag race teams with sneaky valve grinds, drag racers putting nitromethane in their oil to add a tiny bit of extra oxygen into the fuel/air charge in the combustion chamber, not to mention flat-out illegal heads, valvetrain modifications, carburetors, suspension modifications, etc. in drag racing. There were many aerodynamic systems in f1 that were quickly made illegal upon discovery by fia, etc, etc. I will admit that most of my knowledge on this topic is limited. Not to mention that even the best-informed person will only know about the cheats that were discovered at some point. Probably the majority of rule bending and breaking goes unpunished as it is likely never brought to light.

Would be interested in hearing more about the pop-off valve incident in CART back when Toyota first came in and couldn't compete with the other engine marques. They apparently found that the manifold designs/pop-off valve locations were creating lower pressure areas around the pop-off which allowed more boost than the rules allowed. I believe Toyota actually brought it to the attention of the organizing body rather than just massage the rules like everyone else. I only know about this because a team we were competing with in a production car series 10-12 years ago did the same thing on a VW. Ingenious really, but their ability to pass cars from a much faster class on the straightaway made people start to scrutinize them closely. If you're gonna cheat, do it _just_ enough to win - no more.

Youre so right about the crowds being bloody stupid, it's like running around on the motorway/freeway. I'm pretty sure that gets you arrested in most countries. So why ban the sport? just charge a few spectators with 'reckless endangerment' or something, and force racing teams to fit better safety cells and fire supression. One of the drivers was killed because his car (RS200 I think) was basically too weak and the engine was in the rear, designers made the cars as light as possible for obvious reasons, but this resulted in cars that were not very strong, I dunno what the state of roll cages was at the time, but clearly not enough for 400bhp+ cars. But group B could have been saved by better regulations (including crowd control and automatic fire extinguishers), if they had been introduced soon enough. But once people started dying, its easy to understand organizers and teams wanting to stop.

He said, that this restrictor was needed to compensate child's sicks, due to a lot of innovations in st205, compared to st185. TTE was the most innovative team in wrc of that time. Antilag system, active differentials, hydraulical clearense control, super strut suspension. All this systems need time to tune for synergetical effects. Toyota begins to lose to subaru, thus they wanted to compensate their loosing. He also said, that in team knew only few people about it. Looks like it TTE was punished for their successes. To bring intrigue back into champioships. Someone who knew just betrayed the team. After Ban period was ended, TTE won the WRC with the same 3s-gte engine in the corolla, with more compact and lightweight body. Also interesting story was with charging capacitor of boosted air in the back bumper of Ford focus wrc.

ford and subaru used the air tanks but it wasn't cheating but bending the rules. the rules state all air must go through the restrictor which it did but they stored the air that wasnt used at off throttle then used it at full throttle. this was also banned from following year.

I guess one gets jaded and sees everybody is cheating and then you could get an existential crisis but if you get paid to win in that rotten system, you have a tough choice to make. Plus, if you happen to be the idealistic fool who can actually win against cheaters without cheating ... then politics can still foil your victory. We should really learn to transcend the whole crooked ideology that glorifies competition.

NASCAR had seen Smokey Yunicks 11 feet long and some inches thick fuel lines ( holding some extra 19 Liter fuel ) wich means he could drive the race car without a fuel tank another 2 laps. 1952 had also seen a wooden roll cage in NASCAR.- very funny Gordon Murray’s f1 Brabham with adjustable ride height .

Smoky Yunick a Florida car mechanic, left NASCAR pretty goggle eyed several times. It was a better race with Smoky and several others who occasionally use equipment "not discussed in the literature" to gain an edge. One year Smoky's car was getting much better milage than anybody else- it was obvious by the end if practice he would need only one pit stop where most would need two; he had run a radiator size fuel transfer hose from the gas tank to the front firewall, and no one had commented during tech inspection. that bigger hose made a two gallon gain in fuel capacity!

This just made me remember that I used to actually be looking for buying a used ST205, selling my Corolla E11 1.6. But I couldn't find anything convincing for a decent price and I don't like driving used cars, so I got the engine in it instead. ... I wish I could just have gotten a Honda S2000 instead, from the start. I remember I knew that would be my forever-car, but I couldn't justify it to small minds. - So the Corolla tuning turned into an endless nightmare. It's sad because I wasn't into tuning out of passion for the craft, but because I knew I needed more horsepower. (Not always more, just a sweet spot.)

Back in the 80's "Sedate" Saab became an overnight sensation with the 900 Turbos and their involvement in SCCA Showroom Stock Racing. They were some of the first Turbos in Showroom Stock racing and their suspicious amount of "Straight Line talent" made them un-beateable on the racetrack until they got busted. They had changed the spring on the wastegate and were running their cars on overboost gaining substantial HP and flying down the straights. Eventually, Turbos were banned in several series to eliminate such easy cheating. These days, significant hp increase (Waste gate programming / Overboost) is just a few secret tweaks away in the engine management software.

I have a feeling it wasn't a whistleblower but the drag race event they had before the Catalunya event that sealed TTE's fate. During the whole season, everybody knew that the Subarus were the 2nd fastest and TTE was fast as always since the early 90s. However, no one could prove anything as its hard to spot the cheat and on rally stages, its even harder to see which car is more powerful as all car does the same stuff over and over again abeit different times and techniques done by the driver. Fast forward to a few days before the Catalunya event. It was considered as one of the final event of the calender and every team is having fun doing demo runs for fans and one of the event was drag racing these cars amongst teams. As mentioned, everyone knew that Subaru was actually doing damn well with the Imprezza. However, every team that were placed against the Celica got smashed hard and the gap wasn't just like a bumper or a car, it was bus lengths and even the Subarus got gapped pretty hard despite being lighter than the Celica. This triggered some warning to the FIA that it made no sense that even the super fast Imprezza was gapped so hard and in no way anywhere close to Toyota's dominance. Thus they opened a case against Toyota secretly. The FIA even allowed TTE to run the car for 2 stages to see their times and sure enough, the gaps were soo huge that it made the FIA puzzled. Thus they halted TTE, took their cars off the race and stripped it down and yet they found nothing. Somehow, they picked up the turbo and initially thought Toyota had simply cheated by placing a similar sized looking turbo but with a lighter blade as on the spec they registered with but upon checking, it wasn't the case. However upon shining a light into the turbo, the scrutiniers then realized the clamps and that got Toyota fucked.
@Dowlphin
@Dowlphin 2 года назад
Wow, so merely shining a light into it could reveal the cheat? Kinda telling about the low standards of scrunity. Genius can be very relative. Smart people understand that you cannot entrust the compliance with rules to the suspected cheaters. You have to do your own testing. (Also much cringe in the food safety sector here, among others.) But also a lesson about the multiple aspects of cheating. Clever engineering, but the meta was stupid. First, you understand that the more severely you cheat, the more obvious it becomes, and secondly, then bragging about it with such drag racing shows the inherent self-defeating nature of crookedness.
@MrLolx2u
@MrLolx2u 2 года назад
@@Dowlphin That's the problem. Toyota was dominating and they got cocky and paid the ultimate price. '93-95 was their golden age and most solid years of all. They were winning left, right and center and if they din't show hand their entire cards in their hands at the demo show, they wouldn't be bust at all but then again, that light did do the trick for the FIA to nab Toyota. Toyota up to that point was really smart. The clamp that they used was supposed to be the same diameter when it was not warmed up to the naked eye and same by using normal eye to look at it, it looks like the same as the clamps the FIA gave to the teams to restrict power to Group A levels but when the turbos were torn apart and "light" was shown on it, then the FIA scrutineers realized that the clamp was just alike in color but the materials were totally different from what the clamps were made out of with the ones they've given out and that's how Toyota got fucked. Still, they got back in '97 with the Corolla WRC which had a good showing but faded out again and recently came back with the Yaris WRC which is dominating.

From what i know about this is at the 1995 rally australia, in an outright drag race in the superstage the Toyota beat the Subaru by a good margin. Everyone knew the Subaru was slightly quicker, that is when they were first suspected there was an issue,i think the drivers knew they had been cheating, when the turbos were inspect at the next rally they found a piece of filter paper growing out of the alloy housing , which then lead to the complete strip down of the turbos. And like you said brilliant piece of enginèrring and the rest is history, they all cheated in one way or another in those days just that this is the most exposed.

This is the systemic flaw that so many people refuse to acknowledge so that the convenient ideology of fear can prevail. On a forced induction engine air = power... I doubt it increased airflow by 25% as that would be more like a 75hp boost... VERY noticeably faster. You can't increase airflow 25% without increasing fuel by the same percentage - especially in a turbo engine. It's still a genius idea - and even 10% more air = 30hp extra - which is a big advantage!
