I’m an expert at old boat wood restoration from working on some real projects. I’m grateful that most good boat builders stopped using plywood or any kind of wood in their construction in the early to mid 1990s. Most went to all synthetic or composite materials for transom, stringers, flooring, seating etc. when replacing and restoring wood even if you are going to be covering with fiberglass and laminating epoxy resins, treat the old wood as well as the new wood with penetrating epoxy resin. It encapsulates the wood fibers and seals them so water doesn’t penetrate. That includes any new penetrations you make with hardware. Drill holes and remove and treat the holes with penetrating epoxy resin. Jamestown Distributor makes the best but I make my own penetrating epoxy resin by thinning quality laminating epoxy resin with no more than 10% by weight or volume an epoxy resin thinner such as Mek, or acetone, or other resin thinning solvent. Be careful of the fumes and mix the resin exactly as instructed. My 2 cents.

Hello Dew, Thank you for the excellent tips! In this video you can see that the wood has a sheen to it from some previous coating applied to the wood. I tis my experience that water will get into the wood. Wood will always rot. It is a natural fiber that doesn't stand a chance if exposed to water. This video is proof of what I am saying. I see this all the time. Please keep watching!

Most old boat makers did not pre treat any of the plywood or other wood used in the construction of the boat with penetrating epoxy resin. Before applying fiberglass and resin. The seat you were repairing had a thin layer of most likely inexpensive polyester resin painted or sprayed on but it was not penetrating epoxy resin. Or else it would not have dry rotted. Penetrating epoxy resin encapsulates the wood fibers and makes them extremely resistant to water absorption. Only a couple of builders did this. Sanger boats and Bayliner and perhaps another brand that was owned by USMarine. Again in the early to mid nineties quality boat makers stopped using any wood in any part of the construction. Including the seats and benches.

I'm definitely going to have to try this technique in the future. I've always replaced the panels. However there are times when you need to blend curved panels into flat panels. I've always used fiberglass but you can't staple into fiberglass especially if it's more than one layer.

@@oldschoolautoupholstery My wife and I rebuilt a Boat with rotten wood but since it was ours, we replaced the original Wood with Marine grade Plywood and encased it all in Epoxy. It was an overkill since we lost interest in our Boat after our Daughter was born 21 years ago! You definitely have the right way to go! ❤ from both of us...

Here is the issue with marina projects like this. I've run into this issue a few times. The boats value is always an issue. Customer has a boat that is worth let's say 5 grand. Even with new upholstery the boat is only worth maybe 5 grand. You open up a seat or side panel and discover nothing but dust! The cost of rebuilding is worth it to the customer! Now you're stuck with a pile of dust, a customer that wants you to put it back and you don't have a way to do it. So you have no choice but negotiate with the customer or bag up their dust and send them packing. I don't even entertain jobs like these anymore. If it's not a yacht or a boat restoration I won't do upholstery on it. I explained the situation so they understand that there will be no turning back once I open this up and find rot. They'll be stuck with whatever the bill ends out being or paying for the work that was done and walking away with bags of what used to be seats and panels.
