The Most Common Trait Amongst Centenarians | Mark Sisson

As much as we focus on food and fitness as the “physical” arbiters of health and longevity, there appears to be much more to it. Sure, the longest living populations are generally not eating Twinkies and Panda Express every day, but the secret to longevity - at least as it’s practiced by living centenarians - does not lie in one specific diet.
So what is it? I see a common thread that comes closer to a personality trait than a practice. But, it's a bit of both.
Brad Kearns and I dig into the details in this video.

My grandmother is 96. She lives by herself, still drives and still has a part time business selling antiques. She regularly goes to dances and meets with other people. She had covid last year and recovered completely. I think her secret is that she never stops moving. She's thin and hasn't had a lot of health problems over the years but her diet is nothing unusual. She just never stops moving and keeping to a schedule.

I've done some research on centenarians in the blue zones. Some were vegetarian, some mostly pescatarian, and some meat eaters....Some even smoke, drank alcohol and one 109yr old ate Campbell's soup & butter pecan ice cream daily. The only thing that they all seemed to have in common, was they had family/friends, faith/church community, and a sense of purpose to keep on living...a reason d'etre (as the French say).

What they, Mark and (1970s) japanese have IN COMMON? They don't eat linoleic acid and they tend to have less senescence and they sometimes accidentally practice IF. Also. xenohormesis from coffee and tea. (Protein and obesogenic (elevated) BCAAs are also fairly low. since ironically overactivated MTOR leads to sarcopenic muscle). -Meat based KD sprinter

Happiness will make you live a long life indeed. My grand father died 3 weeks ago at 91. He was an avid jokester and prankster. 2 days before he died as his kidneys were failing, he asked the hospice nurse how long he has and she said you will probably not make it through the weekend (this was on a Friday) and he said to her "well I can't afford to pay you by then so can you give me another week?" and everyone laughed. He was worth about $20 Million when he died so it was all the more funny as everyone knew how wealthy he was. He died the next evening, Saturday. When he had a feeding tube placed 6 weeks prior he asked the hospice nurse to pour a little whiskey in it. The man smoked cigars everyday up until the week he died.

My grandmother lived to a healthy 103. She smoked like a chimney and was plump. She never exercised. Her diet was a joke. She never had high blood pressure, cancer, diabetes, or crippling arthritis. But her personality was remarkable. She was able to roll with the punches and never seemed stressed out. She walked at a slow pace and her life was slow-paced. I think it was her personality because she didn't believe in meditation or yoga.

Eats cantaloupe daily as far back as I can remember.. it's full of SOD... antiaging !! Ate whatever she wanted. But...as a nurse it's her strong immune system and healthy liver. my great grandma lived well over 100. she would only eat things that could be picked up by chopsticks(she was taught that was the only way to ”eat like a lady”), so we had to chop everything into teeny weeny bits. meal prep for her was a pain in the ass, and she always ended up eating next to nothing but always last to leave the table. when she got off the boat in 'murkkka, she started drinking water like a fish, mainly because back home fightin' the Cong she was always worried there was blood or poison in the water. I remember she keep rambling on about “communists bad! communists bad!” all the time, and was waiting for the day those “commies” would be brought to justice. I've picked up a few of her habits, but personally I'd rather live the American lifestyle and have a short life

My grandmother lived to 93. She was still tilling her vegetable garden at 90. The entrance to her house was up a flight of stairs. She did her own laundry which in the basement...down another flight of stairs, There was no hint what she would die of until she just didn't wake up one morning. My mom (her daughter) is about to be 78 and is in terrible health...so much worse than her parents were in. My upstairs neighbor lived to 94, golfed everyday until he was 90. I use to joke with him "Imagine what your health would be if you didn't live up a flight of stairs".

I really don't see Bob Hope or George Burns as having had a stressful lifestyle. They were able to do what they loved for the majority of their lives. Also they found the love of their lives after their initial first marriages and enjoyed decades with their spouses. Couple that with daily social interactions and providing decades upon decades of entertainment and joy to millions of people worldwide wide I'm guessing they each had a great sense of fulfillment.

Cortisol levels increase and decrease 24/7 throughout the day even if you are a saint! In times of stress, when cells are deprived of nutrients or oxygen, autophagy can provide an alternate source of energy from the recycled cellular material to help them survive. Autophagy can help the immune system by cleaning up toxins and infectious agents. * When your blood sugar drops, your body raises cortisol, growth hormones, and ketones. ... * Elevated ketones - As your blood sugar lowers, your ketones elevate. It's not about eating. It's about NOT eating. If you want good health: Fast! If you want to save money:Fast! If you want to really feel great: Fast! If you want to feel emotionally well:Fast. Start out slowly and increase your fasting time over the first month. You will notice how easy it is to get longer periods and the benefits will immediately be noticeable. Be humble,Be kind, Be forgiving, Be yourself! You are wonderfully made ! Peace! Plant based diets: the more vegetarian you are, the longer you live. The best, Okinawa diet, is plant base diet with fish - (probably because of Essential fatty acids) Humans grew COLD and HUNGRY. Now we live at warm houses with food available all the time. Eat less often Main takeaways: 1- Eat less often. 2- Avoid sugary drinks and foods. 3- Reduce meat intake for longevity. 4- Its never too late for dietary changes. 5- Find veggies that have been stressed out (organic, colorful veggies) 6-Never start a meal with sugars, if you do eat them at last (desert). EAT LESS OFTEN -There is a genetic pathway that gets triggered by low energy. These genes (sirtuins) respond to low energy (low glucose levels-caloric restriction), high heat, low amino acids, high salt (stressors). -----They take care of the DNA repair and the stabilization of the epigenome. -When the body is hungry, the body makes NAD (fuel for the sirtuins). -Two ways to activate sirtuins synthetically: 1) Use some molecules 2) NAD booster. Longevity genes: Mtor: protein that registers amino acids. Allows the cell to build things. Not a recipe for longevity. Activates autophagy. Ampk: goes up when hungry. Makes more mitochondria (important for making energy) Sirtuins Fasting: - Metformin: mimics fasting. - Time Restricted Feeding: At least 16 hours. - Liver compensates for the lack of food. Glucose neo-genesis. It overcomes the feeling of hunger. The liver starts making glucose at a steady level. Sugar: big killer. It spikes glucose. Glucose shut down sirtuins and ampk. Defenses against diseases and aging shut down. Protein: we should avoid high protein red meat diet for longevity. It inhibits mtor. Amino acids: three important. Leucine, isoleucine, and valine: BCAAs. Are used to sense protein intake. The sensor is mtor. The mtor activates when you get them. Mtor repairs and build muscle. In the short run, this is good for building muscle etc. But in the long run, mtor is the responsible for autophagy, which is key to longevity. Plant based diets: the more vegetarian you are, the longer you live. The best, Okinawa diet, is plant base diet with fish - (probably because of Essential fatty acids) Humans grew COLD and HUNGRY. Now we live at warm houses with food available all the time.

There's plenty of centenarians all over the world who never did fasting and they lived well into very old age, fasting is not something we need to do, if you like it and it makes you feel good do it but don't make it seem like it's a magical thing to do, most people like eating, eating is fuel. "Humans grew cold and hungry" yeah but those humans had a life expectancy of 20-30 years old, doesn't make sense what you're saying, the fact that now we live in warm houses and with food available all the time is the reason people are living longer.
