Sunscreen, swimsuits, football head injuries (concussions/CTE), dogs and babies… the doctors on Reddit have strong takes on all of these things and so much more. I decided to look at a thread about practices medical professionals have started based upon things they’ve learned from their patients. Some of the advice is good, such as having an up-to-date will and the benefits of quitting smoking. Other things, such as making sure you pee before you get inside ANY car… are a little too much for me. At the end I also share 3 ways I’ve changed my life based on my interactions with patients, including thoughts on skin cancer and coffee and alcohol consumption. Let me know down below if you think any of these will change the way you go about your daily life!
Check out the rest of the thread here: www.reddit.com/r/medicine/com...
I LOVE reading your comments and take your suggestions seriously. If there’s a subject you want me to discuss or something you’d like for me to react to, leave a comment down below. Many of my videos have been born out of suggestions directly from you, so don’t hold back!

The family doctor wasn't afraid to tell me he didn't know what my skin conditions were when I asked about it and he sent me to a dermatologist and asked me to let him know my diagnosis. Tangentially related but I’m a vet tech and the amount of people that get offended and/or refuse when our vets say they want to send their pet’s x-rays to a specialist is crazy. The added cost is a separate thing, but if it were me I would trust my vet more if they admitted they weren’t an expert in a certain field and wanted to refer.

@electrowave114
@electrowave114 3 года назад
@@bolucky564 So long as there's nothing actively cutting off circulation, the only thing that really matters for blood circulation when it comes to exercise is getting your heart rate up. The circulation of your arms and the circulation of your legs isn't exactly sectioned off - it's the same pulse and the same blood running through both, so any exercise is still good exercise. Case in point: If exercising one part of your body more than the other still left the non-exercised part at risk of things like blood clots, then joggers would be at risk of blood clots in the arms. They're not. Of course, if you have any control over the part of the body that receives less exercise, then it's still a good idea to exercise that part. The reason does not have to do with blood circulation in this case: the less you use your muscles, the more they atrophy. So exercising in that sense prevents muscle atrophy, which is different from blood circulation (and is another thing that can happen with a sedentary lifestyle).

Story time: I worked as a veterinary assistant for years, and one of the worst dog stories I heard was about a family with a 3 year old. The parents decided that they wanted to get a puppy for their kid. Great, right? The only problem was the parents had never taught the child how to handle the puppy, and would frequently leave the two alone together. The child would pick the puppy up, then drop the puppy roughly to the ground. the puppy would try to hide from the child, because being dropped like that hurt, but they were roughly the same size, so, the child could go wherever the puppy could. Well, things finally came to a head when the puppy hid under a desk, the 3 year old followed, and, because the puppy was terrified, he bit the child in the face. The parents reaction? They took the child to the ER, which, you know, good, but they also brought the puppy to the vet where the vet was told that the puppy was aggressive and had injured their child and they wanted the puppy put down. Legally, vets have to do this regardless of how the child's injuries happened, because pets are seen as property, not living beings by the courts of law in most states. So, puppy was put to sleep because of two neglectful parents who never taught their child how to handle a puppy and frequently left them alone together. In my opinion, that dog did exactly what anything living being would do if it was terrified, the child did nothing wrong because, you know, the kid was 3 and didn't know any better, and those parents should be looked into by CPS and should never be allowed to have pets again. Watch your children, teach them how to handle animals gently, and don't leave them alone together.

This poor puppy. And poor child. Both didn't do anything wrong. How can anyone think it's a good idea to leave children and pets alone without teaching each, how to be around each other? I mean, kids can be so different from each other as well. My dog loves kids, she loves to get cuddled etc. But she also wants to have her quiet every now and then. So, at a family party, there were two small kids. A boy at the age of 3-4 years and a girl (4-5 years). Both families have dogs, so you would presume the kids know how to act around dogs. But no. While the girl had learned: if the dog goes to his/her bed to rest, leave it alone. Play with it after it's rested. The boy hadn't learned that. So, my dog wanted to rest and went to her bed. The girl left her alone, even though she really wanted to spent time with her (their doghad passed away only a few month prior, if I recall correctly and she really missed having a dog). The boy though went to cuddle her etc. The girl didn't pitch in, so it was just the boy following my dog around. They eventually ended up under the table, where she couldn't get away from him. I asked his mother (again) to please tell him to stop, because my dog already showed she wanted her rest. I really didn't want to know how my dog reacts if she can't find a way out! She the sweetest thing, always beliving nothing bad can happen, so I have to safe her from herself. But you can't predict how a dog is going to react in situations like this. The boy never learned it, because their dog didn't mind (he was way younger than mine, so also very playful, and also a lot larger). But, as a parent and with knowing dogs, why don't I teach my child how to behave around dogs? Other peoples dogs? It can be so dangerous if kids don't know these things. And not just dogs, any pets, especially the bigger ones. Teach kids how to detect if cats are angry. How to decipher dog behaviour. How to understand horses, if there's any around your place. Cows, anything. You name it. It is dangerous to not know. It's not to frighten kids, but to teach them how they may approach an animal. To make them better people.

Good take all around, the parents definitely needed to be more present and not assume a 3-year-old has the same instincts as a fully grown, matured, and experienced adult. I love that you didn't blame the child, too. The brains of children that young aren't even developed enough to fully show empathy, like they neurologically do not have the circuits to complete that function. They're kinda sociopaths, but it's because the human brain is complex and takes a LOT of growing to reach its full capacity. AND, on top of that, even when the circuits are physically in place, it takes experience and good examples and training to learn how to parse the information they're experiencing and to learn how to skillfully navigate the world. It really sucks to see a living, feeling being lose its life for no reason. I can't imagine having to be the one to do it.

Second degree burns every summer, and one third degree sunburn the doctors had to treat (I fell asleep in the sun). I'm vampire white or lobster red, never a lovely tan. In my twenties I found out about good quality SPF lotions and stopped feeling self conscious about my paleness, so I haven't burned again! Shouldn’t be possible for students to have this kind of schedules, especially when we’re still this young. I assume you’re about middle school/high school age. If you really sit for several hours doing homework, it could be that you study inefficiently. Maybe change something about that. If the teachers don’t give you breaks, just stand up in the middle of a lesson, run to the kitchen and back. Tell them that they’re forcing you into a unhealthy lifestyle.

I get that he said the psych/mental stuff was maybe too specific and strict for most people, but for those of us with certain mental disorders, routine and structure are imperative and even lifesaving. My life falls apart as soon as I don’t have a routine
@saraha8219
@saraha8219 Год назад
This. That may sound like a "boring" life to the average person, but for those of us that are hyper-sensitive we're already constantly over-stimulated - we don't need any more "excitement" in our lives! Also re: caffeine and alcohol, I think the psych consult's advice was pretty reasonable. if you drink something like coffee every day, you build up a tolerance so it doesn't work anymore, then you have to drink more to get that extra boost, and then *that* becomes your new normal, and so on, in a vicious cycle. You're not "enjoying" it at that point, you need it just to feel normal. So it makes sense to save things like caffeine for specific situations, like if you need to get up earlier or stay up later than usual for some reason.

You can lower blood pressure by interacting with a cat and hearing the purring sound. Reducing the risk of heart disease (cat owners have 40% less risk of having a heart attack) Purr vibrations help to heal infections, swelling, bone healing and growth, pain relief, muscle growth and repair, tendon repair and joint mobility. So the cats probably cancelling out your sedentary problems.

We had a quiet celebration with her, ate and drank all the things she wanted (in very small portions), listened to music, lit candles and loved on each other. She didn't tell us what she wanted; we just made up what we thought she wanted, and it was a beautiful experience. We all bonded together and have each other and all our memories of her, to remember her by. She left no will, no estate planning, etc so we just did what to we thought shed like. Make your wishes known, and have t all documented. Her daughter, while mourning, had to deal with estate issues, probate, etc. Terrible.

Going out for a walk? But there are people outside! I turned sedentary when I stopped working because of my second burn out. I'm kind of addicted to the stories I tell myself, I could spend days in my bed just doing that. It's really hard for me when I'm on a good story to break it off to do something. I enjoyed the covid lockdown we had, because I wasn't obliged to go out that often, there were much less people walking around if I had to go out, and I was not obliged to socialize. It actually helped me, I wasn't as anxious about people talking to me on the streets, wasn't freaking out about any social situation that could have happened. It's only after 10 months that I thought it would be great to get a hug from a friend again. Before that, I was working as the head of a cocktail and rum bar on med-fantasy festivals all across Germany. I guess I went way beyond what I could deal with for way too long. The break was more than welcome. Now, as an occupational therapist, I also know it's important to move. But I lack self discipline. I often think about getting a dog, because that would oblige me to get out with it a few times each day. But financially, it's not really possible (even if someone was offering me a dog, there's the food, the veterinarian costs, taxes, ...) and also... I'm working on getting back to work slowly (I start a rehabilitation program next month), and I think it wouldn't be fair for the dog to let him alone at home for so many hours five days a week. But watching your videos a lot seems to get me some motivation back, so I started going on my home trainer two days ago and do some exercises on the mat. Hopefully it will last this time.

Story time: I used to go to therapy here in the USA for about three years (9th grade to 11th grade). I was first diagnosed with anxiety, then was finally properly diagnosed for the depression I was showing symptoms for (they were quite obvious), and then they kicked me out, or let go, as they called it, because quote "I didn't have the will to change". It wasn't until I started seeing my recent doctor that I figured out that I have ADHD. Once my doctor heard the story about the therapy clinic I was let go from, he was appalled, and right away did his best to get me the medication I needed to help my mental health (anxiety and depression and ADHD). The medication has been helping, though it took a while to find what worked for me (buspar messed with the signals between my brain and body, making me involuntarily move my hand whenever I typed on the computer, so we decided never to use that again).
@drakesilmore3760

That's a big oof. It sucks because that exact response to your ADHD is why you now have anxiety. They literally programmed your brain with junk beliefs due to their inaptitude with the disorder. @@skydragon84 ADHD has a large genetic component, meaning it is very likely it runs in the familiy and it's a disorder you're born with. Children can EASILY be taught to use soft hands with animals and others, it’s down to laziness and selfish parenting when they don’t. Yanking hair, slapping scratching - this shouldn’t happen after infancy, if they aren’t deaf or blind they can quickly understand what hurts others. The trouble is again lazy parents- kiddo needs to be consistently redirected.
@Furthea2
@Furthea2 3 года назад
Even with the parent present bites happen. I have 2 face scars from the same dog two different times. Neither bite would have even injured another dog as they have fur to insulate. Both bites were literally "back off/stress" snaps. The first one was just a moments inattention, perhaps distracted by my twin sister, and I cornered the dog in his crate. My mother didn't blame the dog, she didn't have him put down, but she did accept that he, unlike the other two dogs, would never be happy in the household with 2 toddlers so she found him a new home with an older retired child free couple that had a couple of acres.

On dogs- I grew up with the sweetest golden retriever in the world, wouldn't hurt a fly, the best boy. Except one time in his 12 years he bit a kid. My friends and I were running around the yard playing, and it seems like he just got over excited. Didn't draw blood or anything, but it was still a bite. My point is that dogs can bite in play or when they're excited, it doesn't even have to be aggressive, and a dog that doesn't realize its strength with a tiny kid could cause a real injury. And that they can act out of character.

The tip about asking doctors about their experience level reminds me of a story. I was at a routine check up with an eye doctor and I asked her to check for macular edemas because at the time I took medication that heightens the risk of them. That macular edemas were a common side effect of this medication was new to her despite having multiple patients who took the same medication. What I take from this story is that it's really important to advocate for yourself as a patient. Helping educate patients so that they can advocate for themselfs is something I'm hoping to do later as a career.

I understand the end message about movement being helpful in many cases. However, I’ve been to a doctor (GP) who, when I described progressively painful joints the longer I did activities, just kept repeating “walk longer” and “exercise will fix EVERYTHING that’s wrong with people these days.” Believe me I pushed back and discussed her lack of diagnosis, to no avail. Six months later I had my first anaphylactic reaction to nuts, and after the allergist’s diagnosis, cutting all nuts and peanuts out of my diet solved my joint pain because the nuts were causing widespread inflammation. The GP’s advice to walk more was like telling someone with a sprained ankle to get moving. That GP would probably have been just as adamant about “increase exercise” when, a decade later, my feet grew incredibly painful throughout the day with activity. The additional exercise would not have cured the peripheral neuropathy I was diagnosed with. Luckily I stopped seeing her after that “exercise will fix everything” visit.

After watching a lot of videos of him, my brain acts like I cannot see him as the hot doctor anymore. Weird because in the beginning I was drooling over him. Now he's just a doctor youtuber in my eyes, who helps bringing awareness. The Dr. Dilshad, on the other hand... ❤

I texted a family member today about my final wishes because of one of your videos. It was kind of an awkward discussion because I have a history of depression, but after i made it clear that this was just a precaution to make things easier should the worst occur and not anything sinister, she agreed that it was sensible. Always let someone in your immediate family, your roommate, doctor, whoever would find out quickly should you be hurt know what your wishes are in the case that you can't speak for yourself. It's a nightmare to make someone have to figure out what you would want if you're in a medical emergency or dead. Give your loved ones the gift of knowing they're doing what you would want with your organs/possessions/vegetative body/remains.

I agree with what you said about dogs and babies because you included the word "unattended". People need to monitor the interactions but as long as you're a good dog owner and can tell when your dog is stressed, a dog can be around a baby.

Your point about asking your doctor about how many times they have performed the procedure is so important at least for me because I had this huge horror story about my doctor. I once had to get an ingrown toe nail removed when I was 11 and like 20 minutes after they were done I already felt the numbing going away but I thought I was just making it up but I just ignored it but by the time I got home I was in so much pain I was screaming at the top of my lungs. My parents just thought I was being dramatic so they just ignored it for a few days then they finally listens to me and we went to another doctor and they told us I wasn’t making it up and it turned out they BURNED my toe really bad when they cauterized it and it was basically a botched procedure. It literally hurt so bad I had to have crutches for a few days because I couldn’t bare to walk. Do your research on your doctor’s!!!

On the subject of Dr's level of experience with my illness is so dang hard when you have a less common disease like Behcets Disease. I have even had a nurse try and say that it didn't exist *till she looked it up and the Dr corrected her, I gave her the benefit of doubt since she was new* or argue with me on the pronunciation of that disease *like what?*. Most Dr's when they read Behcets they look at me and say something along the lines of "I haven't seen this since med school" or "I've only seen this once my entire career" or "I have only had one other patient with this condition". Its a constant learning experience for both myself and the Doctor. Its also an ever changing disease and incredibly hard to treat since as he has put it this disease can be different in each geographic region, or whether your male or female can change how it affects you, enviromental factors. Alot can be a factor in how it acts. Then there is the fact they still dont understand what triggers it, where it came from entirely or all of its symptoms. They know a lot, but there is an equal amount of what they dont know that is the scary part. I have a deadly form of this disease and its incredibly painful. We are just managing it right now the best we can since there is no cure. I trust in my Doctor because he has been honest with me right upfront. He was also the only one I could find that wasn't either across the state or that would take my insurance that even knew what the disease is and bonus he specializes in it *granted it was at the bottom of the list of things he specialized in*. Its been nice to have a doctor that can talk to me. After not being diagnosed for the first 19 yrs of my life and suffering then after being diagnosed and not being able to find a doctor who could help me or even wanted to try because its not an easy disease to treat or they just didnt know what to do, it was beginning to get frustrating. on top of all that I was recently diagnosed with Rheumatoid arthritis. I'm sure there are alot of people in these comments section in the same boat as me. It sucks and it is even more sh*tty to have it on top of behcets. I honestly hate living like this somedays and there for awhile I really was close to giving up because the pain is just so intense somedays. However I'm finding light in my life again and doing my best to fight through the rough days. I hope everyone else out there who is suffering can start to feel or find some sort of light in there lives. Find something that makes you want to keep going.

Doctor Mike absolutely correct!!!!! I sit for almost 10 hours a day at work! I make medical devices (e.g. catheters)I stand when I can, job depending, but he is absolutely right. I'm 36, I Cleaned houses for a living prior to this job, I've only been at this new job 1.5 years and I'm already falling apart from sitting for hours at a time. My back hurts, my knees crack, I'm extremely exhausted (although I do work 3 or 4am- 2pm ,5 days a week) and very irritable , im to young to be falling apart!!! I think back to when I had my own cleaning company and I realize I could never do that job in the condition I'm in.. So I've started taking 2 long walk daily while not at work (when I have the energy) . And it's made a huge difference..😊😊

as someone who has a pre deposition for skin cancer, dad even being the most sun conscious i mean long sleeves high spf zinc sunscreen hat still sits in the shade and avoids being outside when can, many burns especially as a child, lots of moles, plays multiple sports that last longer than recommended hour of reapplying sunscreen i wear a ton of long sleeve shirts like the fishing ones and spf ones which i don’t really believe or understand how spf works is not being applied to the body, i wear shorts and rash guard with my swim suit, walk my dog in the morning, if i want to do any extra lacrosse or swim training, (my 2 main sports) I wait until the sun starts to go down, it sets behind our house giving me time in the front yard to practice lacrosse and the neighbors behind us have huge trees so a little after dinner in the summer, we got a sail deck covering thing for my dad for christmas, during swim meets and lacrosse tournaments if im not on the field/in the water im under a tent again with the long sleeves im also a goalie so i’ve become accustomed to wearing even regular cotton shirts and pants like leggings or sweat pants, im still in high school so it’s still required to where protective shorts and recommended to wear shin guards, my goalie pants are a little big reaching down to my shin guards, ive got 2 sisters who are both very careless in the sun and my twin has a lot of moles as well and until recently had never really been burnt but she tans outside a lot given we live in nc sorta by the beach, my little sister doesn’t go outside much but when she does she doesn’t really seem to get burnt either she doesn’t have as many mole but more freckles which are caused by the su, neither of them ever wear sunscreen while i still get burnt sometimes while wearing it

When I worked at the hospital I saw patients with so many chronic issues related to smoking. My dad is a smoker and he has quit. But started again. And I’m praying and also having conversations with him about it. He wants to quit but keeps coming back to them for stress relief. Which is sadly ironic since they can increase stress.
