The Most Dramatic Trade Announcement in NBA History

June 30, 1993 - With one of Michigan's most elite basketball prospects in state history penned in as a no-brainer No.1 overall pick, it was only fitting that the Palace of Auburn Hills, located a stone's throw north of Detroit, would host the 1993 NBA Draft. Chris Webber received a prolonged standing ovation the moment his name was initially called that evening, so NBA commissioner David Stern appeared to know full well what he was walking into when he approached the mic to announce a trade involving Webber moments later.
For the record, the three future first round draft picks acquired by the Magic yielded Todd Fuller (1996), Vince Carter (1998), and Mike Miller (2000). One year following the Webber deal, Orlando packaged two of those picks (1996 and 1998) alongside Scott Skiles, sending all to Washington in a salary dump intended to facilitate the Magic's signing of Horace Grant.
Four months later, the 1996 and 1998 future first round picks (Fuller and Carter) returned to Golden State, the original owner of the picks, once again in exchange for Chris Webber, who was sent to Washington following a second-year fallout with Warriors head coach Don Nelson.
Todd Fuller averaged 4.0 points over two seasons with the Warriors. Carter, drafted fifth overall by Golden State in 1998, was sent to Toronto on draft night in exchange for North Carolina teammate Antawn Jamison.
Webber went on to enjoy a 15-year Hall of Fame career. Hardaway, meanwhile, teamed up with Shaquille O'Neal to lead the Magic to the Finals in 1995 before leg injuries prematurely dulled his ascent. Hardaway made four all-star appearances in Orlando then gently winded down his career as a role player in the 2000's.

For those wondering about the three future first round draft picks: Orlando retained the 2000 pick and selected Mike Miller. They sent the other two picks to Washington in 1994, who then sent those picks BACK to Golden State for, you guessed it, Chris Webber. The Warriors used those picks on Todd Fuller (1996) and Vince Carter (1998), though Carter was immediately traded to Toronto in exchange for Antawn Jamison. Basically, the Warriors traded Anfernee Hardaway, Chris Webber, and three future first round draft picks for Tom Gugliotta and two of those same draft picks.

Sure we lost an amazing power forward To get the next best guard, however That gap was filled the next season by Horace Grant. Horace was exactly what we needed defensively. Didn't require huge numbers, and had the mindset of a champion. We do not beat Chicago in the 95 playoffs without him. As good as C-Webb is, I believe he needed his offensive touches and him and Shaq would have clashed and left that void at point gaurd with just Scott Skiles. because of this, In handsight, I think it was the best decision for everybody

I'm 2 years younger than you but you make great points. For years I believed the Magic made a mistake by not getting CWebb. You make great points about how Horace filled the gap defensively and how without Penny they would have only had Skiles to play the PG. As a Spurs fan I can say having two big guys in Robinson/Duncan wasn't enough. That the Spurs need good perimeter players to win a title which is why they had a gap of 4 years between the '99 title and the '03 title due to guys like Elie, Elliott, Avery Johnson all declining and retiring. It wasn't until they reloaded with Bowen, Ginobili, Parker were they back to winning titles again. The Magic would have faced the same problems by not having a good PG.

I was born in 1973 in Seattle, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American. (these show you where, when, and HOW I grew up) The power forward slot was the Magic's weak spot in 1992-93, and I thought Webber was PERFECT to plug that gap. Not to take away from Penny, in his prime. But, I realized something else, in the past 5 years (and, I'm 48 as I write this): So many great centers, did NOT have a dominating power forward! Who were the best championship-winning power forwards the Lakers had? Pau Gasol was awesome. But, Kareem had solid but not superstar Tom Rambis, Shaq's best Lakers power forward was Karl Malone near the end of his career. I guess it IS hard for a dominant center, to co-exist with a dominant power forward. But, look at the greatest frontline ever, of Larry Bird, Kevin McHale and Robert Parish. Believe me, I was on the Shaq-Webber bandwagon.

Shaq basically gave Orlando no other choice then to get Penny somehow. He said it many times in interviews that after filming Blue Chips and seeing what Penny could do that's who he wanted as his teammate. Even if Orlando just kept with C.Webb I don't think they would have been as successful as Shaq/Penny simply because Scott Skiles wasn't a good enough PG to contribute to the duo

Penny + 3 picks was actually pretty sound by Orlando, just didn't work out with Penny going down, and I don't think those 3 picks translated to much. @@guesswhonot1620 that doesn't refute he wasn't a better player or a superstar. That just means something robbed him if that opportunity...that being injuries. had not the Bulls been a machine of domination, the 90's woud probably one of the most evenly contested decades in the history of the NBA. He was overrated. He made 4 all star games, but should have only made 3. Other than those three seasons, he was mediocre, mainly because of injury. But if he hadn’t been injured, I don’t think he would have had a better career at PG than J Kidd, Stockton, Payton, Iverson, Tim Hardaway, and several others of his era. Even PGs like Kevin Johnson and Stephon Marbury had better numbers. One can blame injuries, but even in his early years I never got the sense that he could dominate the position. Not his fault, however, that he was taken so highly in the draft and he was more than a serviceable PG, but not a Hall of Famer by any stretch.
