These are scrumptious. I am drooling over the Katie Rodgers set. Would love more videos to learn more about your experiences with pastels.

Thank you for another wonderful video featuring the beautiful Roche pastels! I loved seeing you do your watercolour with them and I will definitely be using that idea in my work. I have used traditional watercolour as an underpainting for pastel before and when I do that I apply a coat of clear pastel primer to the watercolour paper. This doesn’t stop the watercolour effects but it provides the paper with the “tooth” needed to have layers of pastels applied. If you did this ,you could add the addition of detail to your watercolour paintings with the pastel. To avoid smudging your journals you can insert a page of glassine paper or grease proof paper, between the pages to protect your paintings.

yes they are very expensive! if you have a look at the Instagram account you will see all the hard work of making these pastels is done primarily by two ladies to keep the integrity of the product in tact.. . it is a lot of work on their behalf, they have worked very hard to keep these pastels from the verge of extinction essentially, I really applaud & appreciate how hard they have worked, I’m sure it has been anything but easy & im very happy to support their work! 🤗✨🎨💕🌸🌷

Your RU-vid channel is my latest obsession! I have severe ME/CFS and don't have a lot of energy or stamina, but watching your videos is inspiring and relaxing. These pastels look gorgeous. My faves are Schmincke, Blue Earth, and Sennelier. I've been using pastels fairly seriously the past couple years, but started my "fine arts" exploration with watercolors about 6 years ago and have been missing them. I'd like to find a way to combine the two somehow so I'm very interested in your process! Your videos are so lovely, but my (already miles long) wish list is getting longer and longer! haha! Did you ever do a sketchbook review? I couldn't find one. Would love to see your opinions on the ones you've tried and liked or didn't like. I like the Strathmore 500 Mixed Media cotton paper, but there are only two sizes in the hardbound version. I wish Saunders Waterford made a nice hardbound sketchbook as it's my absolute FAVE watercolor paper, thanks to Jean Haines. Also, I got the Winsor and Newton Drawing Gold and it runs right off my nib. Any suggestions? Thanks so much for your beautiful videos! Jessica (@jc_watercolor on IG)

aaw Thankyou So! & I’m so sorry! I’m so glad I can help in a small way! I really want to try some Schmincke pastels! I still have to do a sketchbook review, ive jumped around I’m still not settled on one particular sketchbook & often use the Milford pad, I’ve been really enjoying from Jackson’s, I’ll try to link it.. . I agree about Saunders Waterford, they do make a sketchbook on Jackson’s but it’s not high white it’s the cream paper which I’m not as fond of.. . m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yom2j6fu-EU.html this video should help with the ink, it’s probably just that the nib needs a bit more cleaning or preparation.. . Thanks for a lovely message! have a L💕vely day! 🤗✨🌸🎨🌷💌

I only have quite cheap (cheap as opposed to these :D ) pastels and I am not a pastelist either, but I am very happy that I see another artist do the same to pastels as I do - using them with water:)

I am so happy to see you play with your new pastels...in a watercolor-style from light to dark! That’s thinking out of the box! Looking forward to all the new ideas you have for your channel! You mentioned you wanted to get to know what your followers like and do and where they are from. You may already have seen my posts on IG marguerite0720 with reference to your channel. I am from ‘s-Gravenhage, The Netherlands and love playing with various makers, also handmade/semi precious pigments so much. Every morning i meditate on a subject and post an imagery along with a quote, much like in the old books of the Middle Ages. My word for 2021 is ‘Illuminate’! Well, you certainly illuminate by teaching and sharing your art for which I thank you! Wishing you a very creative Happy 2021

They would disolve better with alcohol!70 % at least. I am a new pastel "artist" and can't afford them but love Sennelier

Thankyou! I don’t really want them to dissolve more than this as that’s the look I’m going for but that might be a really helpful suggestion for others! ✨

Sorry to say this but these pastels are overpriced and dusty. There are so many better options than $600 for 36 sticks. I think they are using marble dust for their binder.

I don't know that they are over priced. Quality wise they are at the top. You can't make the accusation that there are 'better' products available. When it comes to quality products, 'best' goes out the window at the top and it becomes a personal preference. Even across brands, you might not buy one brands ultramarine because you like another companies product better. I have wrestled with the cost question myself but the makers are in the heart of Paris, the shop rent is higher than other cities. All their pastels are hand made in small batches. It's defiantly an artisan product however it is a quality product. Making pastels are these peoples lives and it's their prerogative to charge what they want. They have the right to do that like any artist has the right to ask what they want for there art. I do think they could change their process to get the cost down and make the product more available. You will get no arguments from me that they seam to be pushing a square wheel up a hill. As far as I can tell they have no intention of doing that and I am not sure if its because they like the exclusivity or if it has to do with the artisan culture hand made idealism found in all EU artisan products (Champaign anyone?). As far as binder being marble dust, maybe, maybe not, I think that is a bold accusation to make without testing them. From the dust I have collected and precipitated out, there is not a lot of binder. They claim to use mostly clay and sand but they don't give out their entire recipe. However other companies guard their recipes too. If I were to give an award to the dustiest pastel I would give it to Ludwig, at least I can hold a Roche like a Girault and not have to clean the pastel or wipe my hands after every use. Are they expensive? Absolutely. I like to use them because my 'flow' as an artist is much different when I use them, I feel really free to create. I really really like the feel of them and they work with my style. I think every pastel artist can relate to the 'feel' of their tools and we all have different preferences. We could be using paint, there is no reason to use pastels, which are limiting in color and so much more expensive than a set of paint! These are arguments I hear from some painters, pastels are, 'too expensive and not worth the price'. If you have a pastel that you grove with, that's great, you probably don't need these.
