David Austin roses are totally legit.....they have a HUGE following here in the States. We sell them at work and I see carts and carts of them leaving the perennial yard every day. And bonsai is so cool..you should totes start one....they can become a family heirloom.

The Bonsai prices are legit. They represent decades of work, often by several generations of Bonsai Masters. Some of the plant material can be 100s or 1000s of years old, and they are passed down as heirlooms to the next generations. Bonsai itself is an art form just as drawing, painting, or sculpture. The masters can “see” the form of the mature form in their minds and then spend years developing a living plant into its potential. Because it’s literally an art, it is open to interpretation, but has roots in actual theory, including mathematical perspective, form, balance, and line. It’s also tied to Zen Buddhism as a connection to nature. I have a small “Zen Garden” developing next to my greenhouse. I’ve been dabbling with Bonsai for over 25 years and still consider myself an absolute amateur. I’m just happy I finally have a space for them.

Bonsai are so amazing- I have a very slight interest growing currently for the bougainvillea bonsai I’ve seen but not enough to do anything about it yet. So cool to see. Also I realize it wasn’t the point of this weeks video but I instantly feel better about grabbing a few unicorns last month- this puts my plant purchases into perspective right now (could be worse!) 😂😂😂

I would really like a video in depth about Leaf Lux. What type of things are in it, how it works, etc. I know its actual recipe would be proprietary. I know Kaylee Ellen says her fertilizer is supposed to have cal mag, etc. Hers isn’t available to try in the US. Does it have anything that promotes rooting? Sometimes I mix a little rooting hormone in with my nutrients when first adding cuttings to their first semi hydro home. I have also wondered how its ingredients might compare to a big competitor, FoliagePro 9-3-6. I’ve recently stopped using FoliagePro when my bottle ran out and started using Leaf Lux to try. I actually like how it is tea colored, because I can tell visually what dilution is in which jug. I have been using a half strength 3mL dilution to water my moss poles and the two capfuls for my semi hydro.

It doesn't have any hormone in it for rooting (would suggest NAA for that) but has plenty of potassium and I've noticed incredible root growth with it! Truly appreciate the support!

The price for bonsai that looks like that should be whatever the artist asks. That is a beautiful plant, and incredible work of art! These can not be mass produced by any way other than by hand. Do roses not need cold stratification and dormancy in order to germinate? I dont remember, but the process for making new roses could be more extensive than that for aroids. Their high price tag could be justified.

You can propagate roses from cuttings. Creating a new rose is quite extensive because they're made by cross pollinating and selecting the ones with desirable traits. At David Austin they do up to 100000 cross pollinations a year out of which they get about 450000 seeds. 200000 seedlings emerge from those seeds and around 15000 are chosen for further evaluation and 8 to 9 years later they get 3-6 new varieties that are commercially viable. All those seeds and plants are labeled to not loose track of the parentage. Not only the flowers are taken into account but the disease resistance, general hardiness, ease of propagation and even the scent as well. Variegated Aroids have been discovered by luck as far as I understand it.

Bonsais aren't old. While there are some very old bonsai, that's not how they're made. You grow a plant big and then prune it back to a small size and that makes it look old. That 300 year old tree looked exactly like that 300 years ago.

That’s not necessarily true. Bonsai hunters scour the planet looking for “old” (Yamadori) material. These are plants that have stayed small due to harsh natural environments and lack of nutrients. While “most” Bonsai people will encounter is from young plants trained and sculpted to look old, there are legitimately old plants that have been chosen to create absolute masterpieces. One of the oldest bonsai in the world is 1000 years old and counting….

I'm a bonsai nerd. I have a bunch of trees in my collection, but nothing truly remarkable. Since you're also a plant nerd, I figured I'd go ahead and let you know the correct pronunciation of bonsai. It's actually pronounced "bone" "sigh". Like the word bone, and the word sigh. Not a lot of people know that. The mispronunciation in the 80's from the movie Karate Kid has stuck that mispronunciation into our lexicon ever since. I used to say it wrong until I started practicing the art of bonsai myself.
