GamerGate is often misreported. Initially Zoe Quinn’s ex boyfriend made posts on Reddit revealing that his gf had been cheating on him for years and was verbally abusive. She would gaslight him and accuse him of being an abuser for suspecting her infidelity. She even convinced him he was mentally ill and made him see a therapist. Redditors and online people felt really bad for him. Because she’s a despicable person. However, some people picked up on the fact that she was having affairs with other gaming journalists. And when one of them was discovered to have covered her game, people accused this of being a conflict of interest. At the same time several gaming journalists decided to post coordinated features called “gamers are dead”. Major sites basically mocked people who call themselves “gamers” as being pathetic and claimed the cultural identity was now dead. This kicked off a firestorm. But to fully understand the whole context of Gamer Gate you need to understand that the media had been going to war with their readers for a few years. Gaming journalists had started pushing politics heavily into their articles and were constantly degrading the largest demographics in gaming (male gamers). Or to put it more simply, game journalists had disdain for their own readers and it was palpable. There had been tension between the two groups for years. After the “gamer is dead” bs was pushed out by major sites this caused a movement on social media to start calling out unethical games journalism. It was at this point that a section of gamers jumped on the Zoe Quinn story because it involved her sleeping with games journalists who didn’t disclose their relationship when covering her game favorably. And of course people who felt bad for Zoe Quinn’s ex were glad to have this blow up because they wanted revenge on her. Gamer Gate then went massively viral and the vast majority of the people supporting it were genuinely calling out games media for corruption and their awful treatment of gamers. Most of them didn’t even know who Zoe Quinn was and weren’t aware of the social justice drama. But the movement didn’t really have any leadership. So it quickly became co-opted by extremist incel types who hate women. But despite what games media likes to spin Gamer Gate was not a sexist movement. The vast majority who supported it were simply pushing back against how awful games media had become. The issue is a few bad eggs used the movement to dox and harrass people. Granted, a lot of the activist journalists were genuinely terrible people and didn’t help the situation by continuing to flame people on.
