I had a former therapist who gave me such a gift-she encouraged me to develop a friendship w a woman in my neighborhood who has become my “sister.” It worked because we shared priorities-dogs, walking, the forest nearby where we walk. I invited her over to chat and went into perfectionist mode-what to serve, my house, etc. NONE of it mattered! We talked for 3 hours. Since that time we try to have a “funday” each Sunday. I don’t mean to be dramatic, but I don’t think I’d have survived w out her. She is my sister. My anxiety and self doubt could have stymied me and kept me from developing this friendship. I hope others don’t do what I almost did and let circumstances keep them from developing a relationship that contributes so much to my life.

I need to do this . I grew up riding in international horse shows and in sailboat racing this no girlfriends around . Or they are married and I'm single . This is a goal for me but I am still at the messy beginning. ❤

Same. I have to 'mask' when I socialise and I have children, so my small store of energy goes to them first and I have none left to put towards making real friends. I feel you. 😢😢

Hi Michele. What a lovely tribute to friendship.... As you may, (or probably won't😁) remember, I recently retired after nearly 20 years at Walmart. I'll be 75 in August. Working at Walmart isn't conducive to friendship. Everyone worked different hours with different days off. But, I managed to make 3 very close friends. We were as thick as thieves. Two have passed away, one moved away. I still talk regularly to the woman who moved. I'm lost without my little tribe. And now, in retirement, making new friends is especially difficult. Maybe that's why I feel a sort of friendship with those I follow here..... Have a wonderful weekend. I can't wait to hear all about it.......

I retired in January, and it's so difficult to make new friends as you said. I'm still in contact with 2 of my work friends, and hopefully that will contomue. I moved here (Las Vegas) almost 10 years ago and of my friends back in Indiana, only 2 (my besties) have continued. My PCP told me to get out of the house with people daily and start walking. I really miss my job.

Joining something helps to find friends as an adult. Knitting stores, places of worship, a museum going group, whatever your passion is. Then you find like-minded friends. And. Yes, it’s harder when you’re retired. I treasure my friends, old and new!

Funny, when you're younger, making lots of friends is easy, especially if you have kids or pets. As we get older, and people move away, or take different pathways, having 1 or 2 very special and close friends is a true blessing. I have one best friend that I've been friends with since I was 10. We don't see each other often, but when we do get together, we can just pick up wherever we left off. But whom I consider my very best friend, is someone I've known for 35 years, and we talk every morning at 8am. I love her with all my heart. Our girls grew up together. I'm so incredibly lucky to have her in my life. She's been with me through thick and thin. I hope that you have a wonderful trip with your friends. 💓🥰💖

Sorry, second comment today. You are so right about work friends. When I worked in NYC it was easy to make friends, but now that my office is in Westchester County, no one socializes after work. Most of us now work remotely, so it’s even more difficult. My very close friends moved from NY years ago. Most weekends I’m on my own, which at times is difficult. I have a standing weekly call with one friend and I speak to another at least once a day, no matter how short of a call. I’m considering a move out of NY and making friends in a potential new city/state is a real concern of mine.

Join clubs, go to events, hit up a yarn store or book shop, check for special events in your area. Gyms, hiking groups, running teams, whatever. Especially if you're new to the area. You have to go and be social. I know, the horror. But it works.

I’m so very lucky to have a few good and close friends. I’ve found that making new friends has been challenging, especially since my friends have all moved either out of state or within 2-3 hours away. But I’ve managed to stay close to my friends even if they don’t live here anymore. I’m retired now and I volunteer and am making some new friends there. True friendships are a blessing!

I think it is hard to make friends as an adult because the older we get the more set in our ways we get. We know what we like, dislike, want, and don’t want. I think it is some what easier to find people you like on the internet. You can search for them but often they don’t live anywhere near you.

Making friends as an adult can be challenging for sure.....living as an expat for the last 9 years in 3 countries has afforded us an extraordinary experience...and I've made lovely friends....but when I go home for the summer....and see my friends of 30 and 40 years.....that have tried hard to keep in touch during our travels.....that feeds my soul in a way I can't explain. ❤ Have a wonderful girl's trip! cheers from Zurich

Thank u for this reminder! Im going to text a friend i have not talked to in a while. My friendship game suffered greatly in late 20s and early 30s when my friends started having kids. They had less time and seemed fulfilled with their mommy friends. I even had one tell me they get enough socializing w their kids parents and being a parent left little time for non kid related socializing. That was a real eye opener for me. It also didnt help that most of my core friend group had much more flexible working hours than i did. I had to redirect and try to find other women (and men) who didn’t have kids or mayb had older kids. I found it was easier to make acquaintances or more surface level friends and still struggle w a lack of deep friendships. U r reminding me that its also up to me to put myself out there. Thank u for talking about this. The struggle is real!

This was a wonderful video on friendship. It can become harder to find true friends in your 50s or 60s even at a much younger age. I’ve been blessed to have a handful of friends for over 40 years whom are 3,000 miles away and I visit yearly. I’m so grateful to have them. More power to you Michele . You have a kind heart ❤️ .

I lived in a hostel when I came to live in the city of Melbourne about 40 years ago. There are about 6 of us who still catch up at least once a year. We pick up right where we left off. They are probably the group I consider really close friends and it doesn’t matter when we last saw each other.

Enjoy your trip with your friends! My issue I’ve had with making friends as an adult is that a lot of people don’t seem open to making friends. I’ve started conversations with people and it usually becomes clear to me they’re not really there to make friends (even at social activities which is super odd). But, I keep trying as my circle of friends dwindles.

I've seen my friendships change a great deal over the years as my kids have grown past high school and college. I used to see everyone at the store and now I rarely, and I really mean never, see anyone I know. Many families we used to socialize with have moved and moved on with other interests and have even become grandparents which changes the friendship dynamics even further. I can honestly say I have 2 best friends and although I rarely see either of them I know my life would be so empty without them. One friend and I text nearly every morning just to start our day to check in. We were room mates in college and here we are 50+ years later. It's a 'nothing burger' in terms of a conversation but it's everything in terms of a loving friendship.

Yes, it's definitely hard to make friends in middle age or being an older adult. I think the "must be nice" comments come from a place of hurt. Friendships take a long time and it's difficult to make friends if we have this inner feeling of not being good enough and or feelings of rejection (already). I thank God that I have made a couple of new friends! Yay! We all need safe people who got our backs and where we feel like we belong and are loved and accepted.

My sister is my best friend! 💕💖 Obvs so much shared background & so easy to talk to but she is the kindest, most positive & supportive Sissy ever! I work all day & get more than enough socialization/stimulation So at night, I love to come home make a great or simple dinner, garden on my balcony, work on a home design project, walk in my lovely neighborhood & then listen to music or read a good book before bed. Hi Michele, possibly you and your followers won't get to read this as you will already be away. I value my friends very much as I am an only child and had to work hard at making friends and keeping them. I feel that I have to make the effort to see people otherwise I wouldn't see anyone. I have 2 friends whom I have known approx 60 years (I'm 63, turning 64 this year) and we usually see each other on or around each other's birthdays. I have made a lovely group of 5 friends from work and we try and catch up at each other's birthdays. One of this group I meet every 2 weeks as we are very close and we talk every few days. I love my girlfriends and would die without them. Thank you for sharing this important topic xxx

As a therapist (and through my own experience) making friendships as an adult is incredibly hard is a common theme I hear. I always suggest reflecting on your own interests and finding a in-person/online group who have the same interest (food, knitting, reading, etc.). It breaks the ice knowing you have at least one thing in common and gives the potential for growth.

Having my friends is everything to me. My family was never close to each other and lots of drama. Early on I realized you pick your friends and I seemed to just feel and know which were my “family friends” those who will take your phone call in middle of the night, sit with you at the hospital or loan you a much needed item like a car when I didn’t have one! I hold them close and it’s worth every effort to maintain that friendship ❤️ loved this video and share, I think it’s hard when you have your YT business to keep friends because of your work schedule, thanks for sharing today, sometimes I feel like your a friend although we don’t know each other but we relate thru your channel you share what encourages us thank you ❤️

I love this topic of friendship. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. My mother has always had friends of every age - older, younger, same age - and I try to emulate this approach. It’s so enriching to be around different generations, to learn from and share with others. I also recommend the recent book How to Know a Person, which is, at its core, about making meaningful connections. I listened to the audiobook and found it fascinating and helpful. I’ve met many of my adult friends by volunteering for organizations that I care about like my local farmers market and art museum.

Thank you Michele! Love what you said about friends. It made me actually rethink about a friend that I have had for a long time and we had an argument and stopped talking last year. I lost my phone in June in Italy and so she did not have my new phone number. She tried to connect on FB and I never replied back. I actually while watching your video and reached out to her and called her. She was so glad I called and apologized for her part in the rift. I am so glad I saw your video because it was the impetus to call her and reconnect. this is a very, very important topic for me so i’ll give my two cents on it! i’m a 27 year old guy from paris, live here, always have and i have been finding myself in this difficult phase of life recently where it just feels like the friendships i valued the most are kinda sorta fading away in a way that we’re all growing to feel differently about friendship in general. i realized that i was spending 99% of my time alone, i live alone, and i tried for the longest time to not make friends with my coworkers, and that slowly my friends just stopped making efforts to get together. i do tend to go out every evening, i love to walk around and that’s also how i like to spend time with people, or like around a glass or whatever but my friends never care to join, either too tired or just busy, and it started to really affect me this year... starting to now meet new people who i choose to be upfront with about how spending time together is important to me. and you would think paris, being such a big city, would make it easy for you but people are so... closed off? most people have their friends from school or work, and tend to not want to make friends outside their own group. and it’s just a little heartbreaking to me but! making efforts and so far it’s been doing me good :) branch out! go have a glass, to a park, have a coffee somewhere and try to talk to people

I think as we get older it gets harder to keep friends as well as make new ones. But you have to put in the effort to maintain the friendships as well as meeting new people if that’s what you want. You reminded me I must make plans with some of my friends, sometimes life gets in the way but good true friends are very special, some of my friends have been around for 50 years but they won't be around for much longer if I don't find time they will end up dumping me 😂😂😂 xxx

My dog makes the same "humph" sound when she doesn't get her way too! And is a very whiny/barky girl. Lots of opinions. 😂 Does Miss Butters do big sighes when she gets comfy? I 100 percent agree with you about friendships. It's so easy to get caught up in the day to day. You gotta make the effort. I don't have a ton of family but have been fortunate enough to have a good group of close friends who are like brothers and sisters to me and truly family. ❤️

I have two close friends, one of whom is in Japan and other lives very close. They are like my sisters and I feel so fortunate to have them in my life. But it is so true to make friends harder as I get older and that is why I try to make time for my friends ❤

My last period was in 2020. Now I am really struggling with sleep. It is so hard- and so frustrating too. I am glad you talk about it now. I am 56 and I pray it ends very soon. Making friends is so hard- when my children were little their friends moms were my friends. I need suggestions too for me ? Also suggestions on hobbies to do would be great. As a substitute teacher I only work a few days a week. I have a lot of free time, to much free time.

My circle became much smaller when I dedicated my life to Jesus Christ. I don't mind my alone time now because I spend it in Bible study, Church, Praise and Worship.....My life has been so much more fulfilled and happier now; than as the person I was before. Trying to live in and of the world and all the expectations society places on you will lead you into an emotional crisis... A truly wonderful friend group is hard to find... cherish them when you do.

When I was younger, I always wanted to live in an apartment with my besties, and just be girls. That never happened. But I was just thinking today, I'm also very lucky that now my best friends and I live 5 mins apart. We don't see each other all the time, but it's so comforting knowing that we are close and can be there for each other as we need to. :) I appreciate that all the time.

I am not overly social so making friends as an adult has been a little hard for me. I also have some trust issues because I have had a couple friends betray me so I am cautious. However, we moved to Denver 10 years ago and I was having a hard time meeting people. Then at our annual HOA meeting for my neighborhood a lady came up to me and introduced herself and invited me to the neighborhood bookclub. And now I simply love these ladies. We have laughed and cried together. We have such a good time. I’m so glad I said yes and took a chance. Have fun with your girlfriends and cherish your time together. ❤

Bonjour Michele, what a lovely discussion about friendship. I don’t have many friends, in fact just 2 and they don’t even live in France. To be honest as an introvert I find it very difficult to small talk, I always try anyway but it surely sounds very awkward! 😂😅 I volunteered for many years and yes I did meet lovely people but we only saw each other on those days. I guess just like you said friendship is really hard work and not everybody is willing to make new friends because it takes so much time. I was born and raised in Vegas, in my late 30s most of my friends moved away and lost touch. I think it can be difficult to make friends here because it’s so transient. Plus I can be shy lol. But it gets lonely. Happy for you that you have a great friend supper group. It’s important.

I don't know why, but the minute you mentioned diners and New Jersey (totally agree -- no real diners in L.A. either), Strubbes and Grunings popped into my head. I miss NJ, despite resisting living there, preferring NY. Anyway, nice to have a group like that. All my friends are back east and only my husband's family are out here and they were the hub of my social life for years. Now, I try to keep in touch with the friends that are still around -- important. One sister-in-law conducts a women's meditation group once a month, so her friends have become my friends and that's nice because like you, my reference group is thousands of miles away. Hope you had a great trip. (I had guests this weekend and drank coffee late. For once, it didn't bother me but I can't make a habit of it -- I try to drink tea in the afternoon instead, but wish it could be coffee, which I love.)

I'm an introvert, and slightly under confident sometimes so it can be hard to develop new friends. I have a couple of very good friends but one lives away now and it is hard to get together with the one who lives closer due to schedules. We are going for supper sometime next week though. I recently met a very kind person at work that I would like to go for coffee with but not sure if she would really want to. Haha..it sounds like dating lol. Ugh, I think I will just be virtual friends with you and Laura here on RU-vid. LOL!

Hello Michele, always very interesting subjects in your vlogs. Yes it is hard to make new friends as an adult if for whatever reason you have to move, it all requires working at it even more. I've lived as an expats for most of my adult life, in different countries so I know what it means. Your suggestions and other viewers ideas are all good: meet-up, the gym, volunteering. We had an amazing group of friends growing up in the 90's. (I am 47 now). Many of us know each other 30+ years later. Sadly, I'm going home in August to North Dakota and 3 of my very close friends passed away in the last 2 years. I'm sad I wasn't there. I will be visiting the family of one. Then I run into how to divide time fairly. I think you're right about making it a priority to get home (for me 1700 miles away) at least once a year and that would solve some of the cramming to spend time with people!! ❤

@@TheMicheleWang thank you, Michele! Yes, it really has been tragic. Two were lost to lung cancer and one ended his life. You always wonder if you could have done more. He had reached out to several of us spontaneously after not hearing from him in a while. He said he'd had a "bad breakup." That's incredibly sad. I had sent a nice, long, thoughtful response and didn't hear back until a mutual friend let me know he passed about a week later. ❤️❤️❤️

Hope your girls' weekend was everything. I struggle with making friends. I'm in medicine and have been for 24 years. Yet, my work friends and I do not hang out after work or otherwise. Regrettably a nurse who I was privileged to work with just passed away, and even though we went different ways in our medical careers, we would see each other once in awhile in the hallways of the hospital. I feel horrible for not being a better friend. I know she would never hold it against me, but it still hurts. 😢 Thank you for the information on meet up, had never heard of it. I want to be a better friend, to my colleagues still at work now, and will vow to do so.
