I noticed that the book of James was often misinterpreted by Christians to the point that it is rarely quoted . Every time I have had a Christian try to use the Bible to critique me or rebuke me for not believing that Christianity is true, I get back at them by quoting verses from the Quran that likewise criticizes people for rejecting the teachings of Muhammad. Christians point out how there was 500 Witnesses that seen the Risen jesus, I point out how the Quran claims a non-muslim King verified the sighting of the Moon being Split in Two the night Muhammad was said to have performed the miracle. ​@Bhoddisatva I think my main take away is that christian fundamentalist interpretations of the Bible is often incorrect. While I am sympathetic to christian fundamentalists because I was raised as one, and I know the intentions of many is to just follow God in an appropriate way; its been more and more self evident to me that the bible cannot always be read littarly. Bible verses cannot be understood fully in a fundamentalist worldview, because they are usually dogmatic. The meaning and the beauty of the verses is usually lost when filtered through apologetics. I'm just increasingly frustrated at my former congregation that they themselves couldn't figure out how to properly read and interpret scripture. I grow increasingly embarrassed and sorrowful at the ignorance and dogmatic thinking of most Americans Christians. My personal goal is to try and understand the Bible as each book in the context it was ment to be read. I find DarkMatter2525s point about Paul needing Jesus to directly intervene in his life to belive in jesus, and Paul then claims people can reach a conclusion about God's existence all on their own. It also saddens me that atheists have thought deeper about the bibke than the average christain. I for sure would have also thought there were way more atheists now days than he cited from his sources.

@@eee6719 I think it is difficult to quantify. Many people believe in some form of a higher being or source, but they don't have enough evidence to name what that higher being or source is. It is also belief based on hope. We become such valuable repositories of knowledge and wisdom as we age, and then we just go away? It doesn't feel fair, and we have a desire for life and fairness that probably predisposes us to want to believe that there is something to our existence after our physical bodies die. So, while many persist in that hope, they have rejected the god of the bible and frankly any other religion because there is no evidence to support belief in that particular version of a god. Others may pick a particular religion because they want to believe what that one teaches, not because there is evidence to support what it teaches. That is a far cry from just a handful of centuries ago when most people were illiterate and were told what to believe by a few church leaders. It is a lot easier to believe something if you can't examine the evidence for yourself. So, even if most folks haven't gone so far as to label themselves atheist, it is completely different from what it once was. In evangelical circles (what I grew up surrounded by as well) there is still some sense of being told what to believe as opposed to believing it by one's own examination. You are right that many atheists know what the bible says more than most believers. It is because they have looked at it through a different lens. They aren't looking at it as a map to eternal life, they are looking at it to determine if it is true or has merit. If you presuppose that it has merit, then you overlook a huge amount of horrible, or contradicting information contained in it. To the more critical seeker, those instances carry a lot more weight, and are much more memorable.

It seems to me since atheists base their morality on the Laws of Cause and Effect, they're less likely to commit crimes, while some religious people think they can do whatever they want, as long as they repent, in which case God will forgive them, and they may even be let out of prison early.

Countries with a much higher percentage of atheists tend to have much lower crime rates as well. That's exactly what we should expect to see if the US data regarding fewer atheist prisoners has relevant accuracy.

I mean what 'nature' of god are we supposed to discern from nature - nature that has death, suffering, and pain to no end. IF theists really want to follow nature's led then the conclusion they will have to end up at will not be the God of the Bible - or at least the one they think it represents!
