Swans is a band you REALLY cant judge on one song, and theyve changed so much since their early 80s stuff. The best Swans us the late 80-s to mid 90s Michael and Jarbor era, which is WAAAAY different than the song you picked. Not sure itll be your thing but it might at least change your mind.

"Punks don't seem to appreciate Sex Pistols" is perhaps the best description of Punk Rock and why punks are punk rock's worst enemy. Everything about the pistols was and is punk: the violence, the drugs, the catchy songs, the deaths, the ungrateful fans, the short career, and the fact that they do only have one real album. But that's all it took. Jones seems to still be doing well too.

I was never a big fan of the Postols. Always saw them as overrated but more recently I’ve grown to appreciate them more.
@LongGone77
@LongGone77 Год назад
Spot on. The classic bands of the genre tend to eventually get a bad rep in punk circles because contrarianism is such a common trait within punk scenes (ie: not appreciating something if it's too well-known in mainstream circles). It's easy to forget just how impactful Nevermind The Bollocks was upon its release. When I talk people who were there upon its release, everyone says a similar thing: as if suddenly everything went from browns and yellows to full-on technicolor, both figuratively and literally. Changed everything. I get The Ramones are not everyone's cup of tea too, but it's a similar situation. The Ramones logo and legend has only became something of a popular/established thing since the early 2000s when the original members started dying and suddenly their music was given more respect in mainstream circles. For this reason, it's easy to forget that the Ramones were no where NEAR the fame and fortune that bands like KISS, Motley Crue, Aerosmith, AC/DC, etc. They were a dive band who rarely sold albums and needed to tour nonstop (in a VAN) in order to play music as a living. They are the ultimate working-class rock'n'roll band; groups like the Pistols and Ramones are revered for a reason, regardless how overrated they may seem today.

@@ggmusic3458 Totally agree about the Beatles. Deep diving into the Beatles history makes it evident quickly that what they did in such a short period of time is nothing short of shocking... specifically between 63 and 66. Every minute of the day was either writing, rehearsing, recording, acting, photoshoots or being interviewed. I remember reading that when they played Shea Stadium, they couldn't even hear one another, the screaming was so loud. Yet, you listen to the recording, and they're so tight! They could've been blind and deaf at that point and their songs still would've been perfectly in tune and on time. It's also like Lemmy once said: the Beatles were from Liverpool. The Stones were art school kids. Everyone thinks the Stones are the tough guys. The Beatles were the tough guys! lol

As a huge Swans fan, I can respect anyone that dislikes their music. Because it definitely isn't for everyone. But not all of Swans' music sounds the same. It's not even all in the same genre. There are essentially three different eras of Swans, their Industrial/Noise rock era which lasted from around 1982-1987 (which the song Finn checked out perfectly summarizes), their Post-Punk/Gothic Rock era which was around 1989-1995, and their Post-Rock era which started in 1996 and has continued to present day. If anyone who has never listened to Swans before wanted to check them out and see what the deal was about, their Noise Rock era is the last thing I would reccomend listening too. I would rather reccomend their Post-Punk era as that represents Swans' discography much better. I would specifically reccomend the songs 'Blind' and 'Where Does A Body End'. To be honest though, I feel like Finn, and most people, would put them in the bottom left anyway.

I am too normie for them these days but there's a live record called 'Public Castration is a Good Idea' that is as extreme as rock music gets, IMO - I can't imagine new dad Finn would be into it, but it is a BRUTAL record, more BRUTAL than Suffo or Infest or whatever... You can tell from the first minute this guy's whole personality revolves around being a contrarian and an anti-music-critic-critic, with the knee jerk reactions to pitchfork and other magazines, being a Taylor Swift fan BUT not liking her more acclaimed (and vastly less uninteresting) work. But thinking that shoegaze, and worst of all, My Bloody Valentine, is boring, is so telling. If you have heard Loveless and saw them live, and the only thing you get from that is that it's boring, you are the absolute most pretentious contrarian to ever live lmao. This guy's whole shtick is being outspoken against whatever critics seem to like just because he never developed good music taste and wasn't able to get into acclaimed music so now he has to pretend to hate it and act as if it's actually the crap music when what he likes is somehow actual good music. I haven't even mentioned his Swans opinion, because that's just an extra dead giveaway that's maybe even more laughable, but it's so see through it's not that funny really. With every band he mentions, he seems to only talk about other people's opinions on them, instead of his own, probably because he lacks an actual opinion that's founded on personal connection instead of just being anti whatever is acclaimed.

Beach Boys and Brian Wilson are responsible for the entire punk genre and arguably emo too. Brian Wilson is probably the most important musician alive. I implore anyone to listen to their discography. I hoped Brian Wilson would get more recognition in his lifetime as the godfather of punk and emo, but that doesn't look like it's going to be the case. I think he knows his music will live on forever, though. I saw him last year perform live and he's still going strong at 80 years old. I don't consider Taylor Swift overrated. I'm definitely not a "Swifty", but she's one of the best pop artists, and imo one of the only actually good pop artists of the past 15 years. @SconnerStudios
@SconnerStudios Год назад
@@pizzzaeater1425 Depends on what you're asking because there's multiple answers. If you mean alternative sound of punk, I'd say The Beach Boys Love You, which was basically a proto-punk album. IMO the album has several excellent songs, but the rest are misses. There's also Pet Sounds, which really innovated many non-typical instrument sounds in rock music, which opened the door for many sounds used in punk and emo. But I personally think the Surfin USA album in I think 1962 or 1963 was what really laid the foundation of punk and emo. It created the "california sound", which is that nasally and whiny sound which was never really used before. Even though the tune of Surfin USA is actually almost a carbon copy of Sweet Little Sixteen by Chuck Berry, it created a new sound for rebellious white youth, who otherwise weren't really listening to anything rebellious at the time and weren't exposed to the black artists at the time. The Ramones said that without Beach Boys, there wouldn't have been Ramones. Numerous punk bands covered, mentioned, or drew direct inspiration of Beach Boys' music. Rockaway Beach, I think the Descendants did a beach boys-inspired song, the Clash's disorted sounds, even bands like Agent Orange and the Dead Milkmen acknowledge Beach Boys. So in summary, give Surfin USA, Pet Sounds, and Beach Boys Love You a listen (they're all on youtube for free).

I agree on your take about The Sex Pistols. Nevermind the Bollocks is a phenomenal punk record that doesn't really get any contemporary love, even though it influenced pretty much everything. I totally disagree about My Bloody Valentine. I don't really like most shoegaze, but they did what they did really well and Loveless is probably one of the 10 best records of the 90s. Also, I feel like EVERYBODY likes My Bloody Valentine. At least the whole midwest emo crowd in the region of the country I'm from seems to have gravitated toward that band somewhere along the way. Your take on Swans was a little dismissive. I don't like the early shit much.The Great Annihilator is a masterpiece. I guess ultimately, if you don't identify with the fanbase of something, you're never going to see anything in the music. I mostly agree about Bad Brains, but they have some bangers.

@ghost_mall 90s boom bap has aged very well. It's still being replicated by artists to this day, Run DMC is not being replicated. Rock literally has the same situation of historical context. Hair Metal has aged pretty poorly overall and outside of parody bands, it has no significant presence in modern music. I'm not even comparing hip hop to rock necessarily, the genre is irrelevant. The Sex Pistols sound still holds up, The Run DMC sound doesn't.
@EclecticoIconoclasta
@EclecticoIconoclasta Год назад
Very different musical issues are involved. There are current bands doing something close to the Pistols sound from the late 70s (a great one is Amyl and the Sniffers for example). Meanwhile hip hop lyrical and rapping technique as well as lyrical themes was still growing and getting more complex during the late 80s and so that is why Run DMC sounds so simplistic right now since it evolved very greatly afterwards with Rakim, Biggie, 2Pac, Nas, MF Doom and Kendrick as well as having other innovative takes such as mumble rap (Future, Young thug) while hip hop beats also grew more complex with late 80s innovations, Bomb Squad, 90s boom bap and jazz rap, Dilla and later with the omnipresent "trap" style of production. So punk makes almost a virtue in simplistic and direct sounds while hip hop was always a genre dependent on electronics (which evolves very fast) and which did something which was very innovative for all music vocalization which was rapping and so that is why early 80s rapping sounds "corny" and dated now while 70s punk not as much
@ergoth154
@ergoth154 Год назад
@@ghost_mall Yeah bro, I'm not saying this because Finn said it but thanks for the charitable interpretation lol Aged poorly doesn't mean it's necessarily bad music, it's that the genre was so unique to the time and the evolution of a specific genre, that the artists style of music just doesn't translate into a modern format. I don't even necessarily dislike Run DMC, I like My Adidas, song is a banger but that style (along with the Beastie Boys) you can't do it unironically. Comedians have been making fun of 80s hip hop for awhile now, I can't believe you've never heard anyone lightly roast that style. Listen to Run DMC all day long, I don't care but I think outside of few songs, the music is very of it's time and as far as hip hop goes, Run DMC isn't even peaking my top 50 artists.

Your Sex Pistols take was a bit of a surprise, given that you seem to prefer hardcore much more. Their niche status is understandably from a US perspective, but NMTB was a No.1 selling album in the UK, and GSTQ would have been a No.1 single if it hadn't been for a dubious method of counting sales that week. Hating them appears to very much be an American thing, perhaps because so many bought into Malcolm McLaren's rewriting of history to claim he manufactured everything about them. Over here he's known to be a lying self-publicist.

I'm a Canadian, so luckily I've never had any issue with being a fan of the Ramones and Pistols without any bias (or for that matter, The Saints from Australia too). It definitely seems to be more of an American thing (same with Brits when it comes to the Ramones), but I also think it tends to be a universal "male between ages 16 and 30 who is desperate to portray themselves as the most punk among their friends and thinks he's revealing some deep obscure info about the truth of the Pistols when in reality, he's just a dupe of propaganda who fell for the same b.s. as many other dupes before him" thing too. Whenever I hear that opinion about the Pistols being a "manufactured boy band", I cringe. It's an immediate reveal of a person who doesn't know their history, but wants their friends to think he does.

Beyond that I think Finn is very close minded who either only tends to like hardcore and metal shit to mosh to or sensationalistically be "extreme (that is when it is "exciting" to him) or else tends to praise very pop mainstream stuff (Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, etc). He mostly hates indie because he holds stereotypes about so called "hipsters" and gentrification from the 2000s. That is how I suggest to approach his videos: for hardcore and metal go to him but expect some fixation on mallcore stuff from the 2000s, for any other rock or music really go somewhere else and for indie just avoid him completely because he seems to often be just ignorant about it as this "review" of Swans in this video showed.

@@ghost_mall The two more "alternative metal" albums from the 80s they released were great as albums and also innovative musically. I can see why some people might criticize the vocals (although HR has been praised as both influential and eclectic by other critics) but perhaps their early releases worked more as singles which was also the case with Minor Threat for example and also would have been benefited more by having better producers at a time where they, as accepted by Finn himself, were more or less inventing hardcore. For more contemporary "tough" hardcore fans their eclecticism and spirituality might be annoying (mixing hardcore with rasta reggae sounds and themes) but it is hard to think that things like straight edge and krishnacore would have existed at all without them and their influence is clear in a band like Turnstile which even wears Bad Brains shirts. By listening to Rock for light and the next two alternative metal albums you can understand all of hardcore´s history since they might be the center of all hardcore and summarize most of all of its main trajectories (making punk even faster in their begginings, delving into self improvement and spirituality with their rasta lyrics, adopting metal influences with the I againts I album, adding groove and even some hip hop influence mainly with the Quickness album and all of that just in the 80s). In the end they were just visionaries who had a lot of personality but that does not mean they will necessarely produce the most realized albums in a genre which they pioneered and which got more complex and diverse afterwards as well as more resources and a bigger scene to sustain it
