This is insane, the two greatest advocates for wrestling around watch each other's videos. Now all we need is to get Stevan Micic and Trent Hidlay on this trend.
He's better than you because he's not in it for himself and isn't an egotistical pompous arrogant self centered stare at himself in the mirror guy like you!
I wrestled for most of my life and through college. A big thing about the "process" that you mentioned is what I've always called the 'Silent Suffering' wrestlers go through. It wasn't "cool" to show off how hard practice was or the workouts you were doing, and if you did show that part of the sport off it was made fun of or mocked. I think it's awesome that more people are stepping up and showcasing the process--wins, losses, fun times, tough times... the whole lot. Great video my man.
I am the father of a wrestler/youtuber, and I am the camera man for my son. Since I have the footage I have made some of my own edits for him. The other day he won an important match for his team at a duals tournament, and after the pin he was in the moment and flexed on the kid. I put together a youtube short with that clip with music and slowmo, we all thought it was a dope video, but he thought it was too much like bragging. I think that is what is missing in the wrestling "cool" department. Wrestlers are so respectful and honorable in the sport that they don't show the times they destroy their opponents, like in a highlight type way. I agree that you should be respectful and humble for sure, but also let the world see your highlight reel. His channel is called "HitSquad Wrestling" check it out, he will be a freshman next season, and is pretty good.
This is overall a pretty great video but a small tip might be to turn up the volume on your voiceover compared to the music. It can get a little tricky to hear you clearly sometimes but I love the honest effort to make something authentic in this world about the sport we love :)
you'll get the recognition you deserve it's only a matter of time the imitations can never compete with your consistent content and eventually your film making skills will transcend wrestling I predict but it's obvious and thank you for bringing the 🔥🔥🔥
I never thought about the parallels and differences of skateboarding and wrestling but your observations a really on point. I'm really stoked that your content is inspiring others to start documenting their careers. Keep em coming!
Why have I not watched this earlier? Kyler this was so dope and still a month later we’re all still waiting for a wrestling video better than this one. Big ups brother, LFG and we all appreciate what you’re doing for this sport. 🙏🏼
I really hope you happen to read this: The thing you said stuck out to me.... It's really is all about creativity and promotion I come from a part of the world where wrestling isn't easily accessible as it is in the US with the sport being a part of high schools and whatnot. How did I get into it? Movies... If it weren't for Sultan or Dangal, lil kid me wouldn't have known about wrestling or even loved it as much as I do. As a kid me and a friend were really inspired by those movies and would wrestle at school during recess (on fuckin tiles that is, goes to show how truly inaccessible it was) The hype was so crazy back in my home country, me and my cousins would wrestle aloooot, during family functions on tiles (once more) and on the grass or sand if we were lucky. A lot of it was self taught, but there's only so much one could learn by themselves I would yearn to wrestle, and if I had wrestled 4-10 rounds a year I was one lucky kid, hence I didn't learn much. Those movies came out in 2016 I hadn't taken it seriously neither had a passion for it that would set me ablaze, nevertheless it was nothing but a small flame waiting to grow bigger, the love was still there. I got into martial arts mid 2021 and slowly started getting into wrestling again. 2022-23 was when it started to snowball rapidly, I knew that if I wanted to progress, I required instruction. Went on RU-vid, imagine my surprise by the lack of how-to's and a clear lack of structure in the video's that were there, I didn't know where to begin.... Until I stumbled upon @WrestlingUniversity, a great channel, taught me alooot, helped me improve massively, but.... even that was built off of promoting it to Bjj practitioner's wanting to improve their grappling. Atleast something of structure was better than nothing. But I faced the problem where I couldn't get the practice I wanted because no one wanted to wrestle, or I couldn't find anyone to wrestle with. Getting 3-4 matches post-c0v1d was a dream. It was in 2023-24 that I massively improved, because I found like minded people, who were about improvement and fitness, I asked them to wrestle with me, and to their surprise, me a scrawny skinny under 100 pounder (currently bulking) was taking down 154 pounders and guys even above, ego bruised they wanted rematch after rematch, and I got to fail and learn alooot, helping with my improvement. Even they got invested in wrestling. I currently have a friend who wanted to learn wrestling, who I'm grateful for because he was the one I tested a lot of the moves on plus two other friends, and it makes me happy to see that I can share my passion for wrestling with others and the improvement I have seen in them just warms my heart. The point being, we lack the sort of videos that promote the sport to the skies, plus we lack instruction for those who don't have the facilities and were captivated into trying it by the creative minds who promoted it. It saddens me to see other sports in the spotlight, while it's us few that carry the niche sports that we love on our shoulders hoping they receive the attention that it deserves. Thanks to MMA and BJJ the sport is flourishing, but I really hope it becomes it's own crazy thing. Edit: I typed this midway into watching the video TLDR: Wrestling is Rad 🤙
I wrestle but also play waterpolo. They honestly feel very similar in that they are small communities and seen as weird. I really hope more people can come forward for waterpolo like you do for wrestling. Also awesome video man!!
I feel like yes wrestling is an sport that does take skill and determination, but its also the money...I feel like we don't see alot of athletes because of the cost..football for example is an once in an year thing that cost well lets say cleats are 120,mouth peice is 30,then usally your school provides the rest...vs wrestling between off season wrestling,camps,training...it cost between 700 to almost 1000 an year minus hotels and different things like that...I feel like we need to make it so its easier for kids to learn wrestling without needing so much well MONEY!
ur doing more for wrestling than flowrestling. W music choice, cinematic MASTERPIECE. It's interesting you said no new people get into wrestling, because in Asia, wrestling isn't even taught in schools or colleges. However, I started Muay Thai at 15 and got into MMA eventually. When I saw the creative, ever adaptible takedowns, I got extemely interested in wrestling so I started watching Wrestling University/Iron Faith to learn more about the art. Now I do my best to get in wrestling practice at MMA gyms and jiujitsu practice. My sparring partners are already learning wrestling themselves to keep up with me, so maybe I'm indirectly making wrestling cool around my community...
bro your dad used to fkn coach me holy sh*t i remember you when u were barely able to walk but u had wrestlign shoes on i swear. shout out to the larkins man love seein this
I remember back in 08 me and the boys would always got to wrestling practice and then after we would go skate at our local skate park and the skate park was made by this old man that’s lived in the neighborhood.
Bro, thank you for showing wrestling in such a beautiful way. I agree 1000% with you that the wrestling community is not welcoming to new people. But with this new wave of wrestling creators we can definitely see that change in the near future!
this is sick, straight up your video styles inspired me to make my first little edit and post it on Instagram, and have plans to post tons more! Good stuff man!
Wrestling is the purest and most beautiful form of physical expression. There's a reason it's been around for thousands of years and popular across multiple cultures.
Look at F1. More niche until they did the drive to survive seasonal documentary where you get to know the people involved, the process and the storylines. That same format would be great for NCAA wrestling
My dad was actually a football player, and people always tell me I should try out but I always just tell them….Nah I wanna be UFC champ and that’s never gonna help me, this will, and that’s why I love and will work hard at it❤(loved the video man)
I’m from the era of Ken shamrock singlets and blood rags and I can’t express how much I relate to this. Back in the 90s there was a few of us traveling America wrestling all summer and no one ever understood why we did it except other wrestlers. Now I’m a coach and a still do it. Chase them dreams young man.
Huh no offense but Ken shamrock didn't wear signet in pancrase or UFC. But "pro wrestling" underwear. Since Pancrase was based on catch wrestling the ancestor of freestyle wrestling and yes pro wrestling. In fact Ken Shamrock was a pro wrestler ( Pro wrestling fujiwari( 1991) a $hoot style promotion). In fact in 1930s -1940s amateur wrestling double wrist lock ( kimura) was used as a way to turn someone around to pin them in "amateur catch wrestling".
In fact if a person was a amateur wrestler then maybe learn catch wrestling for both amateur catch wrestling competition ( but the one where you could do submission not just pin) as well as professional catch wrestling competition for REAL ( like snake pit USA while snake pit Wigan only give out belt and trophy) as well as MMA ( Randy Couture only learned catch wrestling for MMA).
But you could also learn BOTH bjj and catch wrestling/ Luta Livre ( catch wrestling and judo) for MMA. Like Laetitia Blot who did BOTH judo and freestyle wrestling ( also beach wrestling later on) BEFORE MMA. Now trained in bjj and Luta Livre for MMA. Main difference is that catch wrestling and Luta Livre teaches and allow neck crank ( catch style cross face) and spine locks in competition. Plus Luta Livre also teach striking.
You got an old 32 year old former wrestler proud to have been part of this community. I used to make old wrestling videos on youtube when i was in highschool too. This hits close to home.
