Here's another weird but true story from West Virginia
In 1966, the small town of Point Pleasant, West Virginia, became the epicenter of one of the most famous cryptozoological events in American history: the Mothman sightings.
On November 15, 1966, two young couples driving near an abandoned TNT plant reported seeing a large, gray creature with glowing red eyes and wingspan over 10 feet. They described it as a large flying man with wings folded against its back. When they fled, the creature allegedly followed their car, reaching speeds of up to 100 mph.
Over the next year, there were dozens of reported sightings of the creature dubbed "Mothman." The town was thrown into a frenzy, attracting investigators, journalists, and curiosity seekers from all over.
The Mothman sightings culminated in a tragic event on December 15, 1967, when the Silver Bridge connecting Point Pleasant to Ohio collapsed during rush hour, killing 46 people. Some linked the Mothman sightings to this disaster, viewing the creature as a harbinger of doom.
While no definitive explanation for the Mothman has ever been found, the legend persists. Point Pleasant has embraced its cryptid history, erecting a Mothman statue in 2003 and hosting an annual Mothman Festival.
This incident has inspired books, films, and continues to intrigue paranormal enthusiasts to this day.
