Fantastic bench design, love the live edge. I'm on the fence about using Oak as the legs, I think I might have gone with a more comparable wood. But great execution just the same.

But what is it a story about? Where did the mulberry come from? Even without the story, the cinematography was great.

Did the mulberry darken over time. I like the yellow.
@wmwalkerco
@wmwalkerco Год назад
The Mulberry does darken over time. It's a very amber brown now. Mulberry, Osage Orange, Locust, Kentucky Coffeetree all tend to darken with exposure to UV.
@TurkeyCreekGal
@TurkeyCreekGal Год назад
@@wmwalkerco Locust darkens? That surprises me, and it surprises me more that you build anything out of locust. The locust trees here in Northwestern Oklahoma, where I live, are only big enough for fence posts, and they don't make good post for like a pasture for livestock...cattle & horses. Anyhoo, I love this bench and I'm going to try to make one out of mulberry or cottonwood. I have a lot of both trees on my property. I dearly love the 100+ years old cottonwood trees around my place. I have one that was huge that fell on my roof😢, I'll most likely use it to make a bench and some stools out of. Anyhoo thanks again for sharing your craftsmanship!
@wmwalkerco
@wmwalkerco Год назад
@@TurkeyCreekGal It does indeed. They use Locust for fence posts around here in central VA too (100 year fence post the old-timers call them). We have Black Locust and Honey Locust. More Black Locust in my area. Both are incredibly hard, some of the hardest domestic hardwoods in the US. I was just invited to watch the milling of a honey locust biforcation by the UVA Samilling group. It measured about 34" across at the widest and at least 21" at the singular trunk before the split. It was beautiful. Thanks for watching!

Very nice work. Two questions: 1) Any racking without stiles or stretchers connecting the top of the frame along the long axis? 2) Did you elongate the screw holes in the top of the frame to accommodate wood movement (like you would on a cleat or a breadboard end)? Thanks!

Congratulatinos on your work!! What is the make and model of cutter you used for this job?
@erkeltree
@erkeltree 3 года назад
First that was beautiful work. I am a retired arborist, I hate cutting mulberry. The white sap is so stockyard musty smelling I really tried to avoid it when possible. The wood is beautiful and usually nicely figured but I have never used it while woodworking, Does it retain the stickiness when dried??

I have a question for you. I'm building the shelf over my washer and dryer 32x50 in size. I've already tried MDF But that sagged in the middle. Then I try cabinet grade Pine it was much stiffer but it also had a slight sag so what would you recommend for my situation ?

Google "sagulator". You can input your span and material and it will tell you how much you can span

What's to keep this from racking left and right if you sit corporate weight on it like a bench?
@wmwalkerco

Well tight fitting joinery helps. It's a really solid piece. These joints aren't duct tape and bubble gum there's a lot of glue surface area
