In this episode we look at the case of Dr Hawley Harvey Crippen, a meek and mild mannered Homeopath from the United States who moved to London with his wife before murdering her and burying her body in the Cellar of their home.
He and his lover, Ethel Le Neve, then set off on a ship bound for Canada disguised as father and son. This sparked an international chase where Dr Crippen and Le Neve were brought back to London to face justice.

So glad y’all left in the outtakes of Paul being baffled & giggling by the sheer absurdity of that situation.

It's a good thing that Cora's friends didn't dole out vigilante justice because volcana would have popped Crippen like a grape
@incredibleflameboy
@incredibleflameboy 2 года назад
Hyoscine is regularly used as a medication so in this instance the adage that "the difference between medication and poison is dose and intent". I can't see Crippen being absolved of crime because regardless of whether or not Cora's body was in the basement, there was a human corpse bound up in Crippens pyjamas and Cora was never heard from again. It's quite hard to dispute that.

He also wouldn't have gone to such great lengths to escape justice if he was innocent. Running is often proof of guilt.
@naomiskilling1093
@naomiskilling1093 2 года назад
Also even if the body wasn't Cora's it still doesn't explain or answer the following: - Where did Cora go? - Why did she not make herself known to the authorities when news about her supposed murder and the trial of her husband broke? (as much as their marriage had deteriorated, why let him be condemned to death for your murder when you are in fact alive?) - Why did Dr Crippen and Ethel Le Neve try to flee to Canada? - Who WAS the body buried in the basement? - Why had Cora and Dr Crippen never come forward about that body if it was buried on the property whilst they were resident there? (There is no way they couldn't have noticed another person buried a dismembered body in their own house)

She might have set him up. There is some evidence that she did move back to the U.S. Also, it is disputed whether or not the pajamas were as new as they were purported to be, or that they were Crippen's. If he did this, why would he put his pajamas on the evidence?

@ I think you could do a little bit of research whilst you're on that high horse. There are different forms of hyoscine with the most commonly used being hydrobromide and butylbromide. Hydrobromide is an antimuscarinic used to treat nausea and vomiting and excess secretions in the body, it's excellent in palliative care especially in those with respiratory issues or if they are unable to move causing congestion. Hyoscine butylbromide is an antispasmodic commonly used for issues that cause muscle cramps in smooth tissue like IBS.

I found an old book in a used bookstore written by Ethel's lawyer. He wrote a short chapter on her. He wrote that she was a shy nervous woman and the lady who lived with her said she was becoming depressed and more despondent as she faced up to the real truth of her hopeless decision to be a mistress. This obviously affected Crippen as she began mentally deteriorating from it.

What I don't understand is *why* Crippen couldn't just get a divorce -- infidelity had been legal grounds for divorce in England since 1857.
@onetwothree9
@onetwothree9 2 года назад
Good question. I suppose there was the social stigma though I can't imagine that it would be more of a scandal than having an affair. And since it sounded as if both Cora's and Crippen's infidelity was not much of a secret anyway, I don't see why he did not just divorce her. Plus, isn't a bit of social scrutiny a small price to pay to get out of an unhappy marriage and instead be with someone you actually like?
@FunSizeSpamberguesa
@FunSizeSpamberguesa 2 года назад
@@onetwothree9 You'd think it would be a far smaller price to pay -- especially since Crippen could easily have dodged it had he just moved elsewhere. I'm can't help but wonder just what logic he thought was behind deciding murder was the best option -- and why on Earth Ethel went along with it.

she was just mad because she wanted him to go with Paul to the bathroom. so then she could gossip unimpeded with Paul's wife. being a sensible fellow, he wouldn't have gotten the cue. he would have undoubtedly have reacted as you did. as to what i think happened, i rather think he was railroaded. some where out there, mz. cora likely is buried with whomever she ended up with. or alone, given that many a roamer tends to end up that way in the end of their sorry lives. but Not in the cellar. good grief, the man was in medicine. who would have Known better than to put a body in a place where anybody would have been able to catch a whiff. i know London was a stinky place. but i would hazard a guess that even so, in a polite society home, it would have been Definitely Noticeable when the corpse started to go bad. not to mention the fact that as it decayed, the floor of the cellar would have had a very visible dip in the shape and size of a grave. no, it's likely that if/when the body of whomever Was placed there, it was already in an advanced state. best guess? he was a medical man... the corpse may well have been one he put there but it was Not his wife. remember this is Also a common era of grave robbing to have medical cadavers to mess with. and as to the skin, how in the devil did they find such a juicy and Lively looking chunk of skin That Pink on a supposedly badly decomposed body? this was Not the time of when it was fully understood that there are methods of making skin "flesh up" to be recognizable as skin again. so basically, there may well have been Many crimes going on here but i doubt highly if one of them was murder. maybe malfeasance to the remains of a number of the already Dead, but not necessarily murder... at least Not of mz. cora. but that's just my thinking. honestly, i think the Biggest reason people are sure he did it is the whole, "he was a quiet man. mostly kept to himself." Everybody knows that's shorthand for "dude was a serial killer waiting to pounce!"
