The Murderous Neighbour Next Door... | The Case of Can Arslan

The mere fact that he had violated his no contact order several times and not getting arrested is very worrying. Police should have taken action immediately.

The way he asked to have his handcuffs in front because "he has arthritis" after having stabbed someone 27 times, what a psychopath.

It always makes me sad when the entire situation could have been avoided if the justice system hadn't failed the entire neighborhood.

Massive credit to all the neighbours who grabbed the nearest thing that could be used as a weapon (Cricket Bats and Golf Clubs) to try and keep him at bay. It takes a lot of guts to do that

I’m a foreigner living in the UK myself, people with this behaviour have no place in any society. Not usually eager to point fingers but UK Police are way too soft on such events, it appears as they had plenty of chances to use more serious measures on him. A day before this person made a threat to kill another person plus several years of incidents. Think that threat alone would required a hard handed measure. This type of behaviour makes people want to take measures themselves.

Breaking a no contact order should result in an arrest, every time. I can't believe he told the police he was going to murder someone and they just went "oh okay" and didn't even try to stop him.

Shout out to Pete’s wife for wrestling a knife wielding maniac out of her home even after watching her husband be attacked. She’s a hero.

This whole thing was entirely avoidable, I’m actually disgusted that such behaviour was ignored and downplayed by the police. How many times have people had to die before the police actually do anything?

Mathew’s death is on the police. I understand having to walk a fine line as regards to what they can do ,but once violence and murder is threatened numerous times there should have been a proper response and arrest… one man is going to terrorize an entire community and you can’t do more ? Cmon, rip and my condolences to Mathew’s family for his preventable death .

The bit about him recording the kids through the window / intimidating kids made my actual blood boil. Imagine being so miserable and pathetic that you actively make your neighbors' lives hell just because you can.

I cannot imagine watching the man I love being viciously attacked right in front of me... It's beyond me how people carry on after such utter horror. The family is so strong x Love and respect to all the survivors of this grossly pointless loss x

This man was clearly a ticking time bomb. He tormented his neighbors for years, and it's sad that nothing get done until someone dies or is seriously hurt. This happens way to often.

Can Arslan is the stuff of nightmares. He's the literal definition of the monsters amongst us in society, and the ones police don't bother to put away because they don't want to be bothered with them at all. Him sitting on Matthew's body to smoke a cigarette after that vicious knife attack just shows the horrific monster this man was and the police turning a blind eye to him is what allowed his reign of terror.

Poor Mathew. I feel so bad, he was just coming home to his family. And then his poor family as well. This was very sad and unfortunate. hoping the family is doing well. Neighbors from hell are no joke. I’m sorry if anyone is living with this. I hope you can find peace or that neighbor moves/gets sick enough to stay inside their house. Good luck out there.

I live in the Uk 🇬🇧 and never heard of this case. Thank you for covering and thank God for good neighbours we have always moved closer to. This one hurt 😢

The fact that the police got him ON RECORD saying that he'd "take care of him" prior to the murder should've been enough of a clue for them to take the threat seriously - yet they didn't, means that they're also to blame for any lack of due diligence. They were pretty much USELESS until after he had already killed Matthew. They should have been fired.

The police are at fault in my opinion... A guy says he's going to murder someone... And the police ignored it. That's negligence.

I lived in the countryside half my life (Oklahoma) and we had a neighbor who grew more and more paranoid as he got older. He put up a 10ft wire fence around his property, had an electric fence along part of it as well, and was constantly calling and saying our dogs were getting into his stuff (they weren't). This culminated in him throwing poisoned meat over our fence which killed two of my dogs and almost killed two others. We managed to save the other two by inducing vomiting and performing CPR. We had the urine tested of one of our dogs to confirm it was strychnine. It was over half an hour before police arrived and since no humans were hurt they said they couldn't really do anything. There was apparently no proof that the poisoned meat came from his side of the fence. The only law enforcement we could find who did anything was a Fish and Wildlife officer. Poisoning wildlife is a very serious offense and they put the fear of God into him. No arrests were made but he left us alone after that. We also found live game traps on our property that we didn't place. The neighbors on the other side of his property also had their 12 year old black lab poisoned. Years later my mom, a nurse, took care of his wife in the hospital and helped save her life. Ever since then he's been almost friendly towards us. I have no idea how bad things could have gotten, but stories like this make me thankful that things deescalated when they did. I still go out to my mom's place to walk the property line occasionally to make sure the old bastard isn't up to anything.

In the case of the Zushi Stalker on this channel, the one in Japan where the police LITERALLY GAVE A STALKER HIS VICTIM'S ADDRESS after she had moved far away and changed her name, which resulted in her murder, her husband sued the police/government for their negligence and won money for it. I know that there is no amount of money that could make up for the loss of a loved one, and in that case the husband only received a paltry $10,000 as well, but I would say the police were similarly negligent here and the family deserves some form of compensation as a result. I hope their family finds peace, and that the children are able to grow up as healthily and well adjusted as one can, having their father murdered outside their home...

The police messed up big time, they simply didn’t care about the safety of that neighbourhood, he clearly threatened to kill them, had taken photos of his daughters bedrooms, openly spoke about missing jail and wanting to go back, all those years and nothing changed, they only decided to act when a tragedy happens, absolutely gutted to hear about this story, I feel so mad at the police right now honestly because they failed those people.

Important to note he knew when Matthew would come home. If you have a crazy neighbour and you have a routine, make sure to change the routine or be ready

There is no excuse for that level of police incompetence. He explicitly threatened to murder Matthew on a phone call with the cops about violating his no contact order. How on earth was he not immediately arrested?

The absolute bravery or fearlessness of the wife of the first victim is truely commendable. This shows how love can make you feel like you're invincable. A small woman going against a big and heavy man like that, that takes courage.

Authorities' inactivity is the most infuriating thing in this episode.

Pete and Sarah need to lawyer up and sue the Police Dept into the stone age for failing to act on the threats made over the phone by the suspect.

I feel so bad for the family for a wife to lose a husband, for children to lose their father. It’s so heartbreaking. There should have been more done by the police to protect them from this maniac. Rest In Peace.

So sad for the Boorman family and other neighbors. Can was obviously unstable and should have been evicted years ago. It must have been real stressful to be neighbors with someone like him. This could have been avoided with an arrest, relocation or some mental health counseling.

Just so everyone knows, if you have a neighbor like this that suddenly dissapears. Nobody is going to go looking for them...... Just something to keep in mind.

Imagine buying your dream home and finding out that the person next door is this ....thing? I think it’s a good idea to park or visit in the street of your potential purchase on a Friday or Saturday night (a few times) and just observe the area beforehand. If this animal had a partner......I can’t even imagine.

I can't believe how calm the officers were during his arrest. I've never wanted to kick a person in the face so much in my life before

I hope the police who basically ignored this issue live with the fact they could have easily avoided this.

Something about this case blows my mind. Majority of the cases you cover bring up strong emotions but this one brings up a different anger.

'' He was reminded several times about the legal complications'' That's where they went wrong, you remind him once, 2nd time you take him in, if you dont take him in the 2nd time, he knows he can get away with it another time and another time.

100% the police could have prevented all of this! The man outright told the officer he was going to murder him and they didn’t even call and warn the man and his family that this monster said this!

I've had the same thing, someone threatening to kill me, but as in this case the police do nothing about it, its terrifying

This one made me physically sick with the level of rage and anger I feel. I was put in a cell for charges that came to nothing (because it was a complete lie) for something MUCH less severe than threatening to murder multiple people multiple times, so how can they not arrest him and charge him each time? A threat like this should never be ignored.

I'm so furious on Matt and his family's behalf, but Pete waiting for the dog to come back inside to lock the door despite being attacked still managed to warm my heart 😢❤

I love listening to true crime cause it weirdly eases my paranoid mind and shows me what I'm actually supposed to look out for so I might be desensitized a bit but this case made me physically sick, angry and just very emotional. Thank you for covering it

I think that, at the very least, Can should've been immediately arrested once he made a direct threat of murder over the phone to police. That was a clear and present danger that the police ignored and it is on their heads.

I love that Adrian gives us a little geography lesson about where these cases take place. Really sets the mood. Great stuff Adrian!

We had a similar situation with an Asian neighbour . Eventually we called the Police one night after he tried to break in . Although we had done nothing wrong , because we are from South Africa ; the Police were reluctant to lay charges . They suggested we must " consider his welfare " . Eventually I cxd the case and he left . British justice is often no kustice at all

This case is absolutely heartbreaking. Police are definitely at fault here, it’s infuriating that Matthew’s life and other victims could’ve been protected and safeguarded if the threats had been taken as seriously as they were. My heart goes out to Matthew, his family and friends, and the fellow victims and their loved ones ♥️

I've had neighbours that threatened me, destroyed my things and basically made my life hell. It was the most terrible thing to be feeling continually unsafe in your own house and it actually made me spiral into depression and anxiety. Only after moved did I begin to recover. What a nightmare. This story is the worst 😢

The fact when the police said he violated his no contact order and said he will sort him out himself, and police heard this and did nothing, sickens me. This was entirely avoidable. Hope he gets what's coming to inside slammer.

It is absolutely tragic that harassment and stalking are such low priorities for law enforcement in every country. But when threats are issued, LE needs to do something more than telling you to get a piece of paper to use as a shield. Too many cases like this are happening. Thanks, Adrian!

How evil, Matthew could have lived if the police had just done something at the start. I feel for these families. Steve was very brave for attempting to help. All the neighbors coming together to stop him was really incredible. It’s horrible that they had to do that, but it’s amazing that they all worked together to stop him.

Another Doctor/Engineer/ Architect, allowed into our country - no questions asked...

I remember moving into my first place at 19yrs with my sister. Unfortunately our down stairs neighbours was racist and unhinged. He threatened us with knives, made false reports about us. One day I got an eviction notification because of noise complaints. I was so scared, lucky the neighbours nxt door helped us Comple complaints about him and backed us. The council got scared because they had done nothing about his behaviour ie the racist threats, the knocking on our door with large knives, within weeks he was out and we got wonderful neighbours downstairs. Thank you neighbours who backed us.

Neighbourly fights are no joke. After we moved in to our new place, I once had to go to the neighbors to politely ask if they could turn down the volume a little, which escalated into a huge and nasty verbal fight. Thankfully it remained a verbal fight. And today, roughly a year later I ever dare say we are friendly towards each other. But that took a lot of effort and I'll never forget the stress that it brought, not knowing what the next move would be. Obviously our case is nothing compared to this one, which I'm very grateful for.

What worth is a no contact order if breaking it multiple times just amounts to being told that it's illegal and you can't do it? My heart breaks for Matthew and his family, their loss of security came at a cost they should never have had to pay

This is awful, but the cop kneeling on him going “I’m alright mate” after being threatened was so genuinely funny to me that I had to pause the video for a minute

God Bless Steve and the other neighbours for their quick thinking to keep him at bay. Those women are so strong, both fought for their loved ones - they should be so proud of themselves. I pray for their healing and I hope this monster gets whats coming to him in jail. This could have been avoided if the police just LISTENED.

you were an aero engineer... how cool... i was always curious where you came from to start doing this channel... Also I am so glad that these people had camera's. We were able to see this in real time. The neighbors who show'd up with weapons to stop him were hero's... Hero's dont always wear uniforms... the person living next to you right now may be a hero

why didn't they take action when the monster said "I'll sort him [Matthew] out myself" ??? that wasn't even a veiled threat, it was a CLEAR, obvious threat. this tragedy absolutely was preventable.

I know the fear they suffered so well. When we moved into our first house with our newborn son, our next door neighbours son would kick his football against our babys window which obviously would wake him up, after weeks of it, I asked him if he would move over a bit and miss the window. This started a year of threats & intimidation, putting lit fireworks though the letterbox, setting the car on fire, we went to the police 64 times, who handed out a no contact order on our the neighbour who was connected to our house! This culminated on new year eve with them pouring petrol though our letter box & setting it on fire. We left that night & never went back, lost thousands of pounds, who wants to buy a house next to that? So I am so sorry for the families, we were much luckier than them, we are all still here. My thoughts are with them.

I really wish they moved away. I know they shouldn't have too but I wouldn't want to live in constant fear. It's such a shame that our laws don't protect us properly 😔

I lived in the UK as a foreign student for a while, and almost everyone had reminded me to behave nicely there as I might be seen to represent my home country by the local Britons. I kept that in mind and the locals paid me back by also being lovely to me. My life in the UK was a very pleasant experience I've ever had This guy, on the other hand, had tarnished not only his home country but also the image of foreigners/immigrants in at least the neighbourhood he was living in.

Adrian can I just say, I greatly respect the time you take in each video to highlight the victims and their lives in such a positive way. Too many RU-vidrs just recap a crime, crack a joke, and plug their shit merch.

Just from listening to this tragic story confirms that we shouldn’t take good neighbours for granted.

It’s sad that the most extreme atrocity has to take place before authorities will take action. In this case someone’s lost a good son, brother, husband, father and friend to a deranged psychopath who’s not fit to exist. Not the first time this has happened; won’t be the last time either.

I find it fascinating how terrible things need to happen in order to actual something to happen to this kind of people

I've been watching your videos for quite a while, and 1 thing I realized is that police in England did not take those warnings seriously until tragedy happened!

What a sick man. I truly wish the police would've done more in such a case. Threatening someone and their family with harm and murder should never be taken lightly, because of their lac of action a family lost a husband and a father.

Can we not agree to a world where if someone makes numerous death threats,violates no contact orders and photographs bedrooms of children,that the least we could do is sentence someone to hospitalization in a mental clinic for several years and have that guy on parol/24 surveillance

To me, if you’re threatening your neighbors and harassing their children on multiple occasions, that should be enough to evict or charge you. It’s one thing for someone to threaten another in anger, however it’s a whole different story when someone has repeatedly threatened to kill another person and/or multiple people.

WOW SO CRAZY AND INTERESTING AT THE SAME TIME

In many towns in America, an ordinance is in effect that if a tenant receives more than three police calls for nuisance the landlord is heavily fined. This would have helped the ppl on that block but it is an ordinance that kicks the can down the road. Threatening anyone with bodily harm should always be an arrest able offense. Thank you for highlighting this case. Prayers for Matthew's family that they have strength.

I've seen the police react so heavy handidly over non crimes, harassing people out for walks and such in 2020, people being a bit offended and any situation where the police have to do little more than dish out fines. But when it comes to serious threats and behavior like this they do diddly squat.

This is devastating and unfortunate. RIP to the man who lost his life and all the other residents who had to live in fear.

Speaking of crazy neighbors, we have this show in America called Fear Thy Neighbor, and in half-documentary, half-dramatization, it pretty much details of how beef between two neighbors end in tragedy or resulting in having police involved. It's a fascinating show, and I feel like this should've been an episode.

This hit home for me. I'm a Swedish Londoner who's lived in the UK for 30 years. I bought my dream flat in London following my divorce and moved from one of the most exclusive areas of the city to a slightly-less one (still considered posh by some). I was so looking forward to a new start. The first few month were heaven until 3 out of the other 4 flats were sold over the course of only 5 months. It seemed very odd that everyone was selling until it became clear why. In the basement flat of our converted period house lived a walking nightmare. She gave me absolute hell for years, threw a brick through my window, placed dog poo outside my door, broke items in my back-garden, threw beer cans and cigarette butts all over the lawn, broke into my shed etc. She held loud drug/alcohol-fuelled parties 3 nights a week on average with what looked like a bunch of scruffy criminals. She was from what one might refer to as lower social class who'd made some money on Lord knows what and felt a need to show off with no respect and concern for anyone else. Calling the police on her multiple times did nothing but cause more problems. The police gave her a slap on the wrist and logged the numerous noise complaint but did absolutely nothing of substance. I ended up selling and moving out of my dream home 3 years later because I couldn't stand it anymore. The neighbours in this case acted a bit like mine, i.e. all cowered and did nothing but install a couple of cameras. I was the only one that would confront her or call the police. They'd come to me and complain, always agreeing that she made living there "difficult and unpleasant" but they didn't want to "start anything". This is a real problem in the UK. People are afraid of sticking their necks out and speaking up against nuisance neighbours. And the police have no teeth in cases like these until something unthinkable happens. What an incredibly sad story for the family in this case and I hope they'll never release this Can of Arse from prison.
