The Mystery Of The Blackstone Fortresses - 40K Theories 

*Ancients artifacts of untold power and potential,found in extremely limited quantity in the whole galaxy* Abaddon : *YEET*

The fortresses may very well be a creation meant to contain the Tyranids. If you think about it, they are the perfect counter to a Hive fleet: No biomass to consume, incredible firepower and a seemingly unlimited supply of automatons and defenses to counter a Tyranid swarm. Furthermore, just like the Tyranids are theorized to be a "fire trench" against the Necrons during the War in Heaven, the Blackstone Fortresses could serve a similar purpose. That is turning the stars of systems in the way of a Hive fleet into supernoave and therefore denying said Hive fleet access to biomass.

So the Ancient Ones could have left the Milky Way? Did anyone try dialing the 8th Chevron on the Webway gates?

The way it cannibalizes other ships remind me of Tyranids incorporating biomass. They are also extra galactic entities. Maybe the Blackstone Fortresses seek the extermination of the Hive fleets? Everyone has a natural enemy, right?

perhaps the 7th only arrived to figure out what had happened to the previous Fortresses. they all could have very well have been communicating somehow, especially if they seem to have their own sentience.

The chaos gods seem to have been formed by the emotions of sentient creatures specifically within the milky way, so it seems like their reach is limited to this galaxy. On the other hand, the tyranids use psychic powers and take advantage of warp phenomena, so we know that the warp exists outside the galaxy. My headcanon is that the war in heaven completely fucked the warp in the milky way, and most inhabited galaxies have a much more stable warp mirror image then the milky way does, so they don't get shit like chaos gods, daemons being summoned into realspace, or warp storms.

The entire plot of blackstone just seems to be building up to the reveal or realise of a new faction Just another thing to add. What if whatever made this fortresses have been around since the time of the old ones and potentially observed them and sent the fortresses to establish contact or maybe whatever they are is what the tyranids could be running from? Maybe even remnants of the Men of Iron trying to conquer the galaxy. The possibilities are nearly endless as to what they are and what they want.

Here’s an idea you didn’t bring up: the Blackstone Fortresses are from outside the galaxy. The Eldar have a prophecy about The Outsider coming back to the galaxy to harvest it. What if the Fortresses are connected to The Outsider?

In light of the information at the end of this presentation it seems to me that these fortresses are the inorganic analogue of the Tyranids. Both are extragalactic and consume their like for resources.

I have a theory on why the daemon said those words: he could have referred to the fact that they are from a time in which the galaxy was much different. If constructed by the Old Ones their "machine spirit" (for a lack of a better term) didn't have to deal with a hostile Warp, which makes daemons difficult to comprehend. Of course it is just a hypothesis, there's nothing substantive other than the fact that Chaos tends to use facts in a distorted way (see as example the vision of the statues of Big E and the loyalists shown to Horus in order to push him towards heresy).

The comment of the Daemon could also be interpreted as a temporal metaphor rather than a geographic explanation. "Not from this Galaxy" could simply mean "Not from this time", and since the Old Ones created their Fortresses before and during the War in Heaven, it was a time where Chaos wouldn't exist in the same form it does now. If the 7th remained hidden for all that time, it is only discovering now that Chaos and Daemonic Entities are a thing.

Products of the War in Heaven perhaps? Pre-robotization Necron tech?

I don't know why but I always figured that the Necrons built them. The fact the seventh one seems self-aware might be because of how the liquid metal they use, Necrodermus, is supposed to be alive and their technology is supposed to be incomprehensible.

There's.. a lot.. of other galaxies out there and each could have their own intelligent races, some even more powerful than the Old Ones ..but they leave the Milky Way alone because it's so corrupt and smells like ass. I'm shocked that Chaos is unique to the Milky Way, considering the nature of the Warp.

Being from outside the galaxy could also mean being from another reality. We know that alternate realities exist and the Warp is connected to them. So maybe there are things from other dimensions or parallel universes coming into the 40K universe.

I'm wondering if they're related to the Tyranids somehow. Not a lot of extragalactic races known. Also I imagine the Warp/Realm of Souls exists throughout the entirety of the materium, but it's different, as the Chaos Gods have only a small section of it under their control, probably comparable to the size of the Milky Way.

The Blackstone Fortresses (BSFs) are scout ships for a race, or even a coalition of races, that tried to or are currently fleeing the Tyranids, if the Tyranids are in fact "everywhere in the cosmos". The BSFs are meant to be strong enough to withstand the Tyranids if they should be encountered, and have EXTREMELY HIGH qualifications for races that they may encounter. Unfortunately, the Tyranids are expanding further and faster than the BSFs can manage at a time. Many have been lost or destroyed and what few remain are slowing getting caught, captured, and some abused into destruction as they are being exhausted of fuel and parts.. On the side. The Tyranids may be a doomsday weapon created by another race that got entirely out of hand. Instead of ending the war it was meant for, the Tyranids ended everyone they get close to. They are not capable of true FTL and so may well be limited to just our "Local Galaxy Group", the cluster of galaxies, bound by mutual gravity, containing the Milky Way, Andromeda and about 54 other lesser galaxies, mostly dwarf galaxies in a region about 10MLy in diameter. Because of the expansion of the universe, it is utterly impossible for anything to travel between galaxy groups without true FTL or near to it. This is due to the lack of sufficiently "strong" gravity to retard or curtail the expansion of the universe. Eventually, it will be impossible to travel at all between galaxy groups without bypassing physical space entirely (For example, no one has shown they a can Fold Space). So, the Tyranids should be confined to the Local Galaxy Group, depending on when they were first activated or unleashed. After all, they may have spread from another Galaxy Group when it was still reasonably possible to do so.

There are also blackstone fortresses in the Lovecraft universe, and the universe of GRRM's A Song of Ice and Fire.

Honestly I think one of the Old Ones survived the War in Heaven, fled to another galaxy, created the Blackstone Fortresses to both stop Chaos as well as the Necrons and Nids, like maybe if all 7 are united they form some sort of barrier that separates the Warp permanently from our universe or something like that, either way I think they're going to play a vital role in basically 40k's Endgame

If we run of the theory that someone sent them here, my guess would be to stop or at least engage the tyranids. My thinking being if their engaged other galaxies they're not attacking mine and if I can help that conflict last longer that's more time I have to prepare personally. Or is the last ditch effort all the race that had already been consumed attempting to help the next victims

Perhaps the old one's recon device scouting the milky way to check if its safe to return, and this "recharge" is actually just injecting random "living/moveing" objects to take back info as to whats still alive in the universe?

I like the idea that they're a relic that predate the Old Ones such that the Old Ones aren't really the first sentient species to have ever come into being at all, but they were the first in the Milky Way Galaxy, and they are in fact late bloomers in the greater scale of the universe as a whole. Most of these other extra-galactic species had already driven themselves and each other to extinction through an enormous war that both predates and dwarfs the War in Heaven altogether. Each of these races that have long since died off were both more powerful and advanced than the Old Ones could ever hope to be, and would have squashed them had they arrived early enough in the universe's history to get involved in their war.

Blackstone fortresses with their main warp weapon seem to be perfect Superweapons against the C'tan and Necrons.

Maybe the fortresses are beings of their own? That would explain the sentience and need to consume other ships (or at least make yourself stronger through assimilating them). Maybe something like a hivemind and the 6 in the Gothicsector where just in a kind of sleep. They seemed to destroy themselves after they were cleaned of chaos. Except the two Abbadon captured (and held).

Usually the "old one made them" is the most accreditated. But i think they were made by Necrons when they ribelled aganist the c'tan. The blackstone they use as material is warp resistant, but polarized in a differend way can be warp enhancer, and that makes them C'tan killer starbases. But with the "outher galaxy" orgin possibility changes all.

God, I hope that they decide to do something with this idea. I've been thinking that we need more extra-galactic stuff in this setting for a while. The Tyranids are cool for sure, but I love the idea of more completely mysterious stuff from beyond.

Possible topic - origin and possible return of lost Imperial super battleships - the Imperator Somnium, Bucephelus and Gloriana-class Battleship, many of these are listed as fate unknown, does Guilliman know where any of these are? Does chaos? And was Abaddon's planetkiller based on one of these designs.

I'd say that we will only find out who/what it could be if a consciousness of similar scale/power can be used to communicate with the vessel. It is upon reading that novel - clear that the fortress has some sort of AI that is capable of not just manipulation of individuals and groups - but has an objective all its own. You could be right about why it is absorbing ships - albeit slowly. But that gives us a look at what might be some sort of nanotechnology and part of why UR-025 is interested in it. That Man of Iron might be the one individual capable of communicating in a meaningful way - alternatively the AI that runs the vessel might be well beyond it in scale. Like asking an Elephant - though sapient to discuss philosophy with a human. It might not even know that it's co-travelers have largely been destroyed or corrupted. That would be interesting. It might have traveled here to investigate what happened to the first 6. After that attack by the demon - it might be starting to have an idea. Most useful to the Imperium et. al. would be it's method of interstellar/galactic travel. Any technology that could be used by other races to avoid using the warp would be a game changer for anyone who could unlock it.

It would make sense that the warp that effects the milky way galaxy is only of this galaxy. Otherwise there would be many more gods and many more races used by the powers of the warp. Maybe each galaxy has its own warp

I don't know, when I look at a Blackstone Fortress it looks very pyramid-y... it kind of screams Necron - minus the green glowing Necron's like to have on their stuff.

I kind of like the idea of the war-hammer galaxy getting cout up in an battle at the gelextic cluster level between swarms of hiveminds and Blackstone fleas on such a scale that it makes even the various races of 40k pusse thinning the destruction is a bit much.

During the old eye of terror campaign the blackstone fortress' were confirmed as old Eldar weapons from the War in Heaven, talismans of vaul, in a white dwarf article Eldrad Ulthuran would has a nasty brush with Slaanesh when trying to commune with one, to "reach out to what once made it Eldar" i think was the line, after boarding it as it approached Cadia, though given how much has been rewritten over the past few years i don't know if that's still true

I think they are Necron'Tyr, but it's possible that they could be one of the C'tan weapon races building more tools, and sending them off through space to the Necrons. Given that your average Necron is like 4 million years old, they can afford to wait for the ships

I'm aware that the Empyrean is confirmed to have exists before the Astronomicon. But it would be interesting if the reason chaos is fighting so hard on the mikyway Galaxy is that this is it's last refuge. Consider if it has been purged through some extra galactic event from everywhere but in the light of the Astronomicon.

Maybe there are other galaxies in the warp too? Or at least the closest equivalence with some sort of barrier that the demons of the warp are either unable or unwilling to cross. The warp after all must be somewhat bound to realspace or it wouldn't be uses as a method of travel.

Hmm the fortresses can destroy stars, thats why i always assumed they were old one/eldar weapons made to kill C'tan in their natural form. But this extra galactic theory trows this conclusion out of the window. Might they then be connected to the Dyson sphere?

The only other extra galactic threat to the milky way in the 40k universe is the Tyranids. Given the fact that they appear to have incredibly offensive capabilities and an AI my guess is that they are either fleeing from or trying to find a means of engaging and defeating the Tyranids. Given what we know about the Tyranid M.O. It makes sense that the best offensive option is a purely technological one.

As far as I can remember, blackstone is a material that is typically used by the necrontyr to negate immaterium effects in realspace just like the pillars on cadia..

Hmm, it could be that the Blackstone Fortresses are in fact a scout vanguard of a new extragalactic invasion. If it is possible, the old Human republic made it to another Galaxy before Old Night, then they could have pissed off an advanced species or A.I. Or maybe it is an extremely advanced A.I. that has existed outside the reaches of the Galaxy, waiting for revenge against mankind?

I think that the reason why the daemon says that its not of this galaxy and thereby doesnt know what the warp is like here is only because of the *vast* scales of the universe as a whole. These things could easily be extragalactic and designed to deal with a *different* warp altogether. Reality doesnt work the same in the warp in any way, but i doubt the influences of one puny galaxy in the grand scale and age of the universe would have much outside of a local effect, unless the milky way is the only inhabited galaxy, which is doubtful.

If they are "Extra Galactic" in nature then they are not the only Extra Galactic "Visitors" to the Milky Way. The Tyranids are also of Extra Galactic origin. The Black Stone Fortresses could have been built by a race of beings as a way of combating the "Nids" and have either been sent to the Milky Way ahead of the Nids or are following the Nids in oder to fulfill their purpose in destroying the Nids.

They could be a type of anti tyrannid or even anti enslaver watch fortress that an extra galactic (the runaway old ones, perhaps) had built and set out to watch for and annihilate a very specific threat of extra or inter galactic origin... inter for enslaver plagues extra for tyrannic tendrils.... Has a blackstone fortress ever come across a hive fleet, or tendril yet? Or perhaps been infested with a genestealer group... or a lichtor gaining access...

probably robotic probes from the old ones, either to see if our galaxy has gotten rid of it's daemon problem, or returning from another galaxy to tell it's now dead masters about it. if they ever wanted to age of sigmar 40k, the latter choice could have seeded a gateway to another galaxy that the tyranids haven't eaten yet
