What Is Cypher’s Ultimate Objective? - 40K Theories 

My theory: there is no purpose. He's just there to be oh so super cool and mysterious and GW has no idea what to do with him.

Pretty sure Cyphers main goal is to kill the Emperor so he respawns with full HP and Mana...but the Imperium is too scared of what might happen...

In response to those asking if Cypher is still on Terra, it is very heavily implied (if not outright stated) that he is not, as the 8th edition Dark Angel codex states that Cypher was being pursued by a number of Unforgiven Chapters during the Massacre at Darkmor, which occurred following the opening of the Cicatrix Maledictum/Great Rift (which itself was after the events of the 13th black crusade). He is also being currently hunted down by a number of Custodes and Sisters of Silence. Nobody escapes the palace dungeons and gets away with it! *shakes golden fist*

I believe that Cypher is on the side of the Loyalists and was ordered by Lion El’ Jonson to make sure that the Dark Angels would not fail the Imperium by getting caught up in other threats and not recognizing the threat of Chaos, so he is like a lodestone of sorts to bring the Dark Angels attention upon dangerous elements that could possibly bring down the Imperium. One of his quotes, I believe tells us about his purpose. “The Heavenfall Blades were tempered with blood and fire. So I shall test the Unforgiven.”

Cypher is to good to be a mere Space Marine (Escaping the more powerful custodes). He must be the third Triplet Primarch Sigma of the Alfa Legion in pursuit of the ultimate covert operation. Restore the Emperor!

I'm guessing Guilliman didn't want that blade anywhere near The Emperor because it's also a symbol of people of Ultramar revolting against the Imperium - Guilliman broke the sword because Johnson ordered the orbital bombardment of the rebels... Guilliman cannot allow The Emperor to know of that. He likely didn't know that sword had been reforged.

Yeah but what if cyphers plans aren’t related to the Dark Angels themselves Chaos or bringing back the Emperor. Maybe he’s trying to bring back the Lion. Or maybe he’s trying to seek what he sees justice for the unjustice done to him by the Lion and the Dark Angels. You never know he could have completely mundane goals. Like maybe he wants a cookie from the Emperor’s cookie jar.

Cypher is part of the webway creation entity. Hence is movements through space. Cypher brings conflict wherever he goes to test the unforgiven. If they have done enough by the time cypher reaches Pimp Daddy E then the lion will wake, and have the entities loyalty completely. Being able to control the webway means no more demon invasion of the earth portal. Big E can revitalise himself. I think Cypher is Corswain and the Lion's soul is trapped in the Lion sword on his back. The watchers placed his soul in the sword after his anguish of Luther's betrayal and his mind was broken. They entrusted it to Corswain as he was the only one who could do the job, switched places with Zahariel, and went on the run. When Cypher gets the sword to the emperor, he will fix the sword and the Lion's mind, forgiving the Dark Angels and bringing the Lion back to the imperium. That's what I like to think, mostly because corswain is awesome.

Redemption was at hand, but SOMEONE *looks at Guilliman* screwed things up.

Cypher really just doesn't seem like a true traitor, he's not in allegiance with Chaos, he's an independent marine with no allegiances except to his Legion and Primarch too so the first theory that he wants to lay the Lion Sword at the feet of the Emperor to beg forgiveness for his and all the Fallen's sins makes a ton of sense

Personally I'm with the whole Cypher is a loyalist side of the fence. He's probably trying to redeem the Fallen and or help bring about the Emperor's return...but as no loyal marine would ever help Chaos?? Idk he's highly suspect.

My theory, Cypher wants to kill the Emperor's mortal form to allow him to become a new 'Chaos' God. Chaos is in quotes because the Emperor would use his new literal god powers to crush the Ruinous Powers.

I think Cypher is trying to regather the Fallen to find redemption and rally them to the Lion at his hour of greatest need, returning the Primarch's sword to his hand and his wayward sons to his side.

Wow, your reading of the Caliban Space Marines' intentions and Luther's fall are pretty generous! I want you in my jury if I ever commit a crime! I could NEVER be convicted. It sounds like Baghdad Bob's description of the very short war in Iraq. "No, no Americans here. . .", as the US Humvees pass behind him in the window. The Lion's relationship with his father was definitely a bit unique. He was utterly loyal to the Emperor. As he conquered worlds, he did not see them as His Empire, he viewed them very plainly as his father's. He held nothing against the worlds were there people, they were intended to be part of the Imperium. He was the first primarch, template for the first legion, and the Emperor crafted custom psychic touches in the minds of many of that first legion, like Astellan. When the Imperium was threatened in the Rangdan Xenocide, the Emperor didn't send for Horus, he brought the 1st Legion. The sword of his first son may have much more significance than simply being a killing tool, it may be the link to both awaken the Lion and resurrecting the emperor. I really don't see any way that Horus nuking some other perpetual removes the Emperor's Perpetual Mojo.

Cypher is the physical battlefield manifestation of the emperor. As the emperor may be linked in the golden throne, his psychic presence manifests as one of the 1st legion as he would have known them, black armour. I think this would explain Cipher’s ability to appear in the heat of battle, when the storm is darkest, to turn the tides for the empire. He will always run from the Dark Angels simply to avoid having his true identity found. His longevity since the end of the heresy and ability to survive the warp untainted could also be accredited to this idea. The fact that some of the Fallen believe that they still serve the Emperor could hunt at this. The Emperor may be so displeased with how his empire has fallen from his own vision, he may be trying to fix it from the outside, since he is unable to do so while sitting on the golden throne.

He just wants to give the Emperor a big ol hug.

If Guilliman had held his end of the bargain, he could have added the stipulation that cypher was to hand over all his weapons, and be accompanied by guards, and maybe even guilliman himself

I believe Cypher wishes to use the sword reforged by the Eldari to reawaken the King who sleeps below the mound. Which is why he could escape the inescapable prison, take back his pistols and take back the sword leaving zero evidence on how he did these 3 separate impossible tasks.

"Answers only lead to more questions" I propose that Cypher did not fail in his mission as you say. The biggest question is not what Cypher's objective is, but where is Cypher now. From this let's go with the facts that we know of. Cypher was on Terra, Cypher was imprisoned, Cypher escaped. We don't know if Cypher left Terra. We also don't even know if Cypher left the palace. Because we don't know what Cypher's true motives were. We can't say that he failed in his mission. Cypher is known for having dubious motives. As naive readers we take things at face value just like naive Roboute. I don't believe Cypher ever expected to gain entrance to the throne room, at least not so easily. I also don't believe he may have wanted to get into the throne room, but merely to gain access to the imperial palace and Guilliman played right into this. It's one of the oldest bartering tactics in history. Start out with an outrageously high price or request so that you can settle upon what you truly desire. Had Cypher asked for access to Terra he would've been stopped before he could get there. If Cypher had asked for entry into the palace he would've been stopped before he could get in. But instead, Cypher requested something insanely high... Entry into the throne room. This made Guilliman think this was his goal. How often is anyone allowed entry into the throne room. The Custodes were even wary of letting Guilliman in. Not even Celestine or Cawl were allowed into the throne room... Only Guilliman. It was an outrageous request and I believe Cypher knew this. He made the request as a bargaining chip to at least get exactly what he wanted. Access to the imperial palace. We often think that everything stems on the Emperor and that has probably been the folly of mankind and the imperium for so long. So much importance is put on one person, but there are far more important things in the Galaxy than the Emperor, and dare say I, there are far more important things on Terra or in the imperial palace than the Emperor, but mankind is probably too naive to see it. But the chaos gods probably aren't and Cypher probably isn't either. Kill the Emperor, schmill the Emperor... Who cares. There is something more intricate at play than the concern of a rotting corpse. The funniest thing is... The dark angels secrets are beyond their reach to stop now. The few fallen that were with Cypher are still imprisoned and able to be interrogated by the Custodes and then all the dark angels secrets may come out, if not out already. The dark angels surely can't go to Terra and demand the release of the fallen into their custody. Surely the Custodes don't want to let it get out that they failed once again by letting Cypher escape. The other reason I believe Cypher accomplished his goal is because he knew just how to escape imprisonment, which means he had inside help or he already knew how he would escape imprisonment and had anticipated being betrayed at some point or anticipated getting imprisoned in the imperial palace. Now if I'm correct and I know Cypher was smart enough to know how to manipulate the situation to gain access to the Imperial Palace, the question is, why would Cypher want to gain access to the imperial palace? Where is Cypher now, and what is he doing? "Answers only lead to more questions"

Mr. Theoriez, Imma letchu finish, love the intro but just gotta point this out as far as that imperial aquila near the end: Take it into photoshop-> Duplicate layer->Hide the first one-> Magic wand the negative space surrounding it & hit delete (You probably did all that so far)-> Now here's where we get rid of that pesky 1-pixle outline surrounding it that triggered this comment: Click the FX button on that layer-> Select Stroke-> Change the setting to Inner so it is not stroking going out, but going in-> change the pixle density to like 1~3. Ta-dah. Just like that, that entire white-pixle outline it's got going on disappears, especially within a black background. If you don't wanna do that, then after the magic want step-> Selection menu-> Inverse selection-> Reduce/Expand your slection by like 1~2 pixles-> Hit delete. It should effectivly delete that border, but has more room for some jank. Love you bae

Important piece of info, read: Lion El'Jonson was last seen in battle on Caliban against Luther. Luther goes full Chaos and mind blasts the Lion so hard he's 'mortally wounded'. This much we know already.... Who is Cypher? The Lord Cypher was a knight of lupus at the turn of the Horus Heresy, until Zahariel kills him and takes on the mantle, having been personally appointed by Luther. Here's the kicker: Luther claims his cypher was killed during the destruction of Caliban, who did it? Motherfucking Corswain, Possibly the greatest of the Lions warriors at the time if not ever. Now in damnation of Pythos, Epimetheus is rumoured to be Zahariel due his incredible abilites as a Psyker, the fact that he was a 'fallen' of the Dark Angels AND a greater demon of Tzeentch was shocked to see him there as his destiny was to be different. As Tzeentch is able to foresee the future it cannot believe that this has changed and could spell huge consequences for the Chaos Gods' plans. If Zahariel took that role, then the destiny of Cypher could go to Corswain, the last to see him at the fall of caliban. The lord cypher is able to pass on the role to a successor. If Corswain could learn to control the Ouroboros after expelling it from Zahariel, it could explain how Cypher is able to travel seemingly through time as he does. If Cypher is Corswain, it could also explain his combat prowess. I believe that Corswain, having taken the mantle of Cypher, found the Lions broken body and sword, he placed the body in the care of the Watchers in the Dark who as of a recent novel we know trust Cypher explicitly which if he was chaos aligned they wouldn't (they despise Chaos), but took the Lion sword for himself. The reasoning for this I gathered from 1d4chan, in that it seems like a great psychic entity is trapped in the sword, an entity far too much for Asmodai to even handle when he tried to take the sword. When Cypher returns the sword to the body of the lion when the imperium needs him the most, will the body and soul be reforged into the Primarch of the Dark Angels Legion, and the Lion will forgive the Fallen and Luther.

I've always had the impression being since Cypher has learnt things from going into the eye of terror, and speaking with the Eldar, that he wants to free the Emperror from his physical body (now prison) to allow his Spiritual powers to manifest and ascend to the level of God like deity. A natural counter force in the warp to the chaos gods, protecting over the souls of mankind, and ushering in a new era for mankind.

Cypher is a savior of the Imperium, treated as a traitor. His presence reveals the Fallen, traitors, and chaos worshippers, but always leads to the protection of those loyal to the Imperium. The Emperor protects his most loyal of children.

Cypher's ultimate goal: to Out-Edge EVERYTHING in the Materium and Immaterium. Nobody. NOBODY. Men. Xenos. Gods. Inanimate statues. Nobody. Out-Edges. Cypher. Nobody...

What if Cypher is Lionel Johnson? Feeling he has failed his father, he went into exile, gathering those repentant Fallen.

Cypher is to intricate of a character for all of his plots and schemes to end with just trying to kill the emperor. 1. Its either to get forgiveness some how or 2. Resurrect the emperor somehow with means most terrains don’t understand or wld take the wrong way.

Sometimes I like to think what would happen if the Great Crusade-era Empire knew what rotating your forces between the frontlines and the territory you control when they can participate in the non-combat assignments was. The ammount of astartes going renegade would instantly drop by half.

There is a variation of the theory that Cypher wants to kill the Emperor to revive him. In that by destroying his physical form is the final key to awaken the Starchild. Instead of the fragments of the Emperors soul returning to him and having him be reborn of flesh and blood, he instead is sent to the warp to join with the fragments and being fully reborn within the warp.

Cypher's probably just trolling people. What could be more hilarious than messing around with a highly supersticious Imperium and watch them cower while they imagine all the horrible possibilities?
