Meru, a namesake of the Cosmic mountain of Indian mythology, rises up between Thalaysagar and Shivling, in a glorious trio of Southern, Central and Northern peaks in the Garhwal Himalaya. Meru North at 6,450m, is the second highest of the three. The first ever alpine-style ascent of Meru North was achieved by an Indo-Swedish team (Åke Nilsson, Birger Andrén, Charu Sharma, Mandip S. Soin & Dr. Tejvir S. Khurana) in 1986. The team took 6 days (round trip) to summit on 6 September, 1986. In this webinar Prof. Khurana recounts the extraordinary story of this historic ascent.
Prof. Tejvir S. Khurana MBBS (University of Delhi), PhD (Harvard University), is a Professor of Physiology at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, USA and has been climbing since the 70's in India, East Africa, Europe, USA, Alaska, the Himalaya, the Andes and the Alps, including some FAs at Dhauj, and likes climbing moderate routes in exotic locales. His research interests include muscle diseases, exercise, hypoxia, altitude physiology and doping in sports. He has participated in a number of expeditions including research expeditions, studying genes, color vision & muscle at extreme altitudes in the Himalaya as well as in the Andes & Alaska. Prof. Khurana can be reached at tsk@pennmedicine.upenn.edu.

I have had the opportunity to see portions of this climb in one of Mandy's talks. But finally this presentation has done justice to the climb. Thank you Prof. Khurana for this wonderful talk. Loved every bit of it. warm regards,

Hi Teji - a pretty decent effort of putting it together so assiduously. Didn't mind the commentary either :) given 34 years - must be the Beer. Here's to the spirit of the Mountains & the Great Outdoors...

An inspirational movie for IMF to emulate in quest for improving the climbing stds from sherpa backed fixed rope climbing. Equally impressive is presenter's memories of a peak climbed decades back and still preserving his archives of photos. Was surprised to get pix from Dr Tejvir about his assistance and generosity in extending help to me in my Korean expdn to Bhagirathi, when Doc was climbing Shivling. One of the best presented webinars in his typical professor like clear cut and to the point narration of the expdn to the piece of heaven . Incidentally Tejvir and President IMF are not only neighbours in Def Col but also kid schoolmates. IMF, leave Climbathon on the Mule's track and launch a mission Alpine style on Meru centl.
