The Neo Geo Affair - SNK’s AES and MVS |  

My god is Vinnk's acting in this amazing. This actually made me tear up a little.

This video is a great analogy for SNK and the Neo Geo hardware. It boils down to this: For most kids back then, having arcade quality games at home was not normal. (Especially before the 16-bit wars) It was a fantasy for most until 1995 with the PSX and Saturn. I've only known ONE person who had an actual AES in 1990. He was from a wealthy family, so whatever.. The point is, it was something you would have had to spend a lot of money on in order to fulfill an extremely wild fantasy. Which lends itself to the quality of deviance, considering we didn't have jobs, and asking for a $600 NEOGEO in 1990 would have garnered the same reaction as telling your mum that you just made out with your sister. And that's BEFORE you mention the prices of each game cart. Nintendo or Sega, we took our pick. AES carts did not sell well. So they produced a lot less units then their rivals. Even today, the scarcity of AES carts keeps the prices higher still. Yes, we have ports and emulation, but for the true hardcore fan, original hardware will always be the grail. And yes, people will still look at you like a pervert.

The Acting in this Video, is spot-on, one of my favourite videos ever.

You might say that. We actually started working on this episode back in November, but my wife was pregnant, and then we had our baby three weeks early. So it was a little busy for a few months, yeah. XD But now we're trying to make up for it with two months of weekly new videos. Glad you liked it!

Even after all these years, the best part of Famicom Dojo is STILL the talking consoles. Everything that Famicom says classy and wise. The embodiment of the eastern wisdom.

It used to be a big thing when I was a kid, and it's still a big thing today. It basically boils down to what your parents bought you; you had to take your pick and stick with it. Adults with money can afford to be platform agnostic. Sega's advertising only helped feed into that feud with their "Nintendon't" campaign. When PlayStation first came out, there was an ad where a guy in a Crash Bandicoot outfit was shouting into a megaphone at NOA Headquarters. Those companies started it!

There was a shop in nearby (to me) Stoke-on-Trent that had an AES on display to play. A great console that was way ahead of it's time. And way out of my price range.

Awesome video. Glad to see you guys back. I myself sadly didn't get into SNK games until shortly after their original closure back in 2001. But since then, I've been collecting their collections between PS2 and Wii.

Ah, that's true. I'm amazed that it can actually be cheaper to buy a Neo Geo MVS arcade cabinet than to buy the home console. Only problem is figuring out if you've got the space for it or the means to transport it.

i actually can relate to this story, i left nintendo in the 64 era for a playstation, later i moved to pc gaming and recently i bought a wii for good ol' times. PS: this video made me feel dirty.............thanks a lot.

I agree, although I think there's something to be said for the Genesis and its "grittier" sound. It's definitely a distinguishing point. I can hear music and tell it comes from Genesis. The whole console just felt "edgier", which I'm sure was a great selling point.

My parents bought my SNES, but I bought a Genesis. I still love both, but for some reason, I guess I live SNES more. There were just so many great exclusive games for the system, though the same can be said for the Genesis. SNES simply looked better, cleaner, and it sounded amazing!

Maybe now I can see Total Recall and get the full experience. XD

I have to say, I can't believe it was about 2 years since the last Famicom Dojo video that you made. WHAT HAPPENED?!

Every so often I think about saving up and buying a Neo Geo AES and a game or two. I mean, look at it! I'm amazed that in a medium where the visuals of yesteryear may not age well, Neo Geo games still look great. The price is always a killer, though. For what it costs for a console and a few games, I can get a library of titles for other consoles. Or I could be responsible.

Or you could get them for Wii Virtual Console at a fraction of the cost -- even if you don't already own a Wii. Of course, the more rare games are not available on the platform, but at only $8 or $9 apiece it's not a bad deal!
