I grew up in poverty - Appalachian poverty where the people are considered a laughing stock worth forgetting in a country that claims to care for the poor. Had my siblings and I living in a 79 Buick with a broken heater and taped passenger side window during winter months because we had no home after what little we did have was foreclosed on and no family wanting to take us in cause “no room”. I’ve gone through nights being hungry, enough to go out and eat dandelions just to have something on my stomach. I’ve been grateful to not experience abuse at the hands of my parents, but I’ve witnessed domestic abuse and seeing that cycle repeat with my sister and being 13 and having to set her nose after being hit with a frying pan. I know all about that commodity cheese, HUD, CPS calls, and tearing away food stamps from the booklet. I don’t have to “practice more empathy” towards anyone simply because our class circumstances growing up could be similar. I don’t have to give her sympathy for her childhood circumstances just because I’ve seen abuse happen up close. Why? Because she’s a grown ass woman doing things at her own volition. She’s got the same choices as everyone else as an adult. Yes, how you grow up can shape who you are in present day, but you also can’t let it be the crutch for all your problems in life. You either moved from it or wallow in it, and you’re suggesting ways she do the latter and encouraging everyone else to justify it. She’s not the first person to have a rough life. She won’t be the last, either, as unfortunate as that is. But I’m not going to sit and make excuses for her when she is old enough to know better. We’re not talking about some 10 year old kid here innocent given their circumstances and no power to do anything. This is an adult that actually does. She _knows_ the situation she’s in isn’t a good one … yet she continues to make excuses for it and remains. She continues to throw punches and be just as toxic … and yet people are supposed to give her a pass because of her upbringing? That’s not how the world works. There’s only so much sympathy and/or empathy that people can give … and if someone is just going to do the same old shit and continue justifying it, then it’s no surprise when that empathy and/or sympathy dries up. Plus, she’s an asshole. How one is raised and what they experience will never give someone a pass to be outright disrespectful and conceited. She needs to grow the fck up just as much as he needs to. They’re acting ridiculous.
