The decade started off quietly enough, just like the smell of Rex Supply Co.'s new 1966 Old World Tallow Shave Soap. A pleasant scent, but the complexity builds and explodes into a citrus, woodsy story as vibrant and colorful as the Swinging Sixties!

I just placed my order last night for the envoy and the 1966 soap/splash, plus a tester of the 1955 soap. Looking forward to my first shave with a safety razor.

Matt, I bought the the entire line of the 1966 as I did with the 1955 line. I wasn't sure about 1966 at first, but I have used it a few times and I have completely changed my mind. The scent is very fresh and invigorating. The base of tallow and the other ingredients is superior. It produces a great lather and protection during the shave. Post shave is enhanced by the a/s and balm and produces a great face feel. Well done, these are 2 of my favorite products.

Really enjoying the 1966 shaving soap. Also From AZ, and I agree, it's a perfect summer scent. The tallow feels fantastic on the skin. The scent is similar to the British cologne Yardley Black Label that came out in mid 1960s that my Dad once used.

I bought this 1966 shave soap along with a 1967 white handel British Gillette Slim Twist aka Knack from Razor Emporium. I really enjoy both of them and the splash is great also. I'm looking forward to the 77 and I really hope for a 88 "my birth year" I'd buy it just for that lol. The citrus and woody scent is something I personally enjoy.

SCOOP !!! I just heard myself say to myself - so it must be true, as I am sure that I am a reliable source - that 1977 will be scented as leather, motor oil, and roasted coffee. You heard me make it up here first! 😜

Great year, great products! I was born in 1966, and love having a product line named for my birth year. So far, I've only tried the Shaving Soap. It's very rich, thick and slick - makes shaving really comfortable. I thought my wife wasn't going to like the scent, but actually does, and so do I. As I'm writing this, we're just getting our first light snowfall here in Thornhill (Toronto area), Canada. Even though the scent of the 1966 is best suited to summer, I will use it during the coming winter months as well because I like it so much. Am going to order the Balm and Splash too, and will give the entire 1955 line a go as well. Thanks for making such fantastic products - from your razors, pre-shave soap bars, shave soaps, and beyond!

I started out last week with a safety razor buying what I guess most would consider the most basic setup I could get with off the shelf products in my area, and one razor ordered online. I got a Merkur 34C, a Bevel shave brush and the Bevel shave cream from Target, and some other pre/post shave product like Nivea Men facial scrub and Harry's balm. My experience has been pretty good. I haven't cut myself at all that I've noticed, and I can't say that I have any significant razor burn, but so far I've had a lot of trouble telling the practical and subjective difference between using the Merkur platinum blade that came with the razor and the King C. Gillette blades I picked up from Walgreens. I guess with a razor as mild as the Merkur, the aggressiveness of the blade itself becomes much harder to distinguish, and from this point I'm unsure what I can or even should do to improve my shave. The one thing I think actually could be better is maybe getting a little cleaner on my neck, but I feel like it would take maybe 2 against the grain passes to get it extremely smooth there, but since I spent a lot of time viewing Matt I've been imitating the way he shaves and just feathering across the same spot a couple times before moving on. Something I've become curious about is a historical question. The razor industry consolidated around the idea of cartridge razors to gouge profit from the consumer as far back as the 70's, so why is it that traditional double-edge blade manufacturing continued seemingly without much pause? What was the market like and who was it serving throughout the last 30 or so years? What was the main driving force behind many companies re-introducing traditional safety razors like the King C. Gillette, seemingly as fancy boutique products to wow customers, apparently in direct competition with their own products that makes them way higher profit?
@RazorEmporium
@RazorEmporium 11 месяцев назад
Profit margin on blades has always been the game for Gillette and others. Nothing changed except for how sophisticated the blade technology was or how proprietary it was with handle. Most of the 2nd / 3rd world have never gone away from DE which is why they are made in those countries.

When is the 1966-scented pre shave coming?
@RazorEmporium
@RazorEmporium 11 месяцев назад
I don't think we want to have pre shaves in every flavor under the sun, I think next you'll see just a non-scented one so that people can combine it underneath whatever product

In regards to Tallow vs Vegan, it's 1A and 1B for my skin. They're both great, however, I do lean slightly towards the tallow. The difference is the superior post shave feel I get from the tallow. I love the formula you're using for the Rex line, and your RE soaps. If I ever break out a vegan soap, it's usually your Barbershop or PAA's King R. Emporium. You eluded to it in your video, but I also want to credit you on the aesthetics of your labeling. I normally don't care about stuff like that, as long as the product is good. However, you nailed that rare combination of great product with great packaging. The Rex soaps/aftershaves look so classy in my bathroom - I love the timeless look of them.

Question for anyone who's tried this... after spending a tonne of money on practically all the "sandalwood" shave soaps, I was disappointed to find that only 2 of them smell like they have a decent amount of sandalwood in them. (maybe) So I'm curious, to those who know the smell of true Indian Sandalwood (the only sandalwood, IMO) does this new soap have any actual sandalwood in it, or is it more like an artists interpretation of sandalwood, using synthetic aromatics (chemicals). While I enjoy the 1955, I was quite disappointed to find not even a trace of sandalwood scent in it.
@BuffaloNickel9
@BuffaloNickel9 11 месяцев назад
I'd imagine You're correct about sandalwood soaps, unfortunately...someone may know one though. I understand what you're after, even though 1955 Smells good, it may not be the Geniune essence. What are your favorite "sandalwoods"? You seem to have done the research and smelled them all!
