The New 4 Point Line Could Ruin The NBA 

4pt line would be an absolute circus. Adding the 3pt line was a decent addition to spread the floor more, but the 4pt line is not needed at all. it will only make the games uglier with even worse percentage shooting and more and more focus on long range shots.

I would rather the NBA consider expanding the size of the court so that the existing 3 point line will be further away creating a more symmetrical arch, instead of implementing a 4 point line. I hope this idea will never come to fruition in my lifetime.

4pts should be half court shot to make it risky and rewarded.

Think about moving the three-point line back a foot or two . The games are boring enough with everybody shooting threes.

I feel unless they make the 4pt line so far out that it gets too awkward to get good spacing or to make shots, this will just make 3 pointers like mid range shots are now. I think they will care more about efficiency for this to add an interesting option to the game. Like why shot from 3 than you can shot from 4. Just like why shoot a long 2 when can hit a 3.

Add a 4-point line if it's half-court or longer. And maybe have the 4-point rule in effect only during the final 2 minutes of each quarter.

As a Warriors and Steph Curry fan I would love this. However, as a general basketball fan I am not so sure if this is a good idea unless it is set at literally the half court line because then like someone mentioned below combined with the over and back rule a team would have to decide whether or not they are going for a four point shot before crossing half court. Once the cross half court with the ball the four point shot is no longer available because then it would be over and back.

I've always personally thought they should just make the half court a 4pt line. The only reason I say that is for when teams are down late in the game. It gives them a better chance to comeback.

I think 4pt line should only be activated during the last minute of every quarter, not all game long. It can be used as a last ditch effort to tie or win games.

I really do not see this happen. It changes the defense game so much you would almost need to play to 6v6. It also divide teams too much, if some teams are already practicing this, or you have a player on your team like Steph Curry, some teams would gain a huge point advantage over others.

A better idea would be to put the 3 point line a little bit further. Too many teams rely on 3 points and lay ups and it's boring. Bring back the mid range game!

Just move the 3 point line back and widen the court. That would allow more than just outside shooting and uncontested dunks/layups.

This may be a silly idea but adding on points on ally oops- depending on how many defenders are in the paint. Would promote more teamwork, passing, penetration and cut down on outside shooting. Also if there is one person on a break and they oop it off the backboard through the defender or defenders. If they add a 4-point line it would be a good way to deter teams from solely relying on it. Its kind of insane to see teams solely rely on deep shooting to make a run during a game especially in the playoffs even when they are missing.

Here's an easy solution that won't require the visuals of the game to change at all. Make the 4pt line half-court. It would make it extremely rare, but it would retain strategic relevance for the final minutes of the game, allowing for some thrilling last-second shots.

Leave things as is. The NFL wanted to change field goals from a standard three points to one, two and three points based on what yard-line the ball is at. They got rid of that.

A 4 point line would initiate so many terrible shots from players that shouldn't be taking them. It won't result in any more points, maybe even less, because of all the bad shots and percentage of chance to hit that shot. Not sure it's a good idea.

I think a 4pt line that only applies during or after the 4th quarter would be pretty cool but not for the whole game.

Three point line served a purpose to keep smaller players in the game and help level the playing field. A four point line would bea gimmick.

I think they should add a 100-point line, for any shots taken a foot outside of the out-of-bounds line, on the opposite side of the court. Although, you might have to make it 2-feet, because most players shoes wouldn't fit in that space, without being out-of-bounds, or a little beyond the 100-point line, thus nullifying the 100-points. 🙂 Then, how would the refs signal that, ... "game over" ?!?!?, ... ha.

This is completely stupid. They even should do the opposite :remove the 3 points line BUT add a 4 or even 5 point area from mid court (like 1m each side). So yeah, you score plenty from there but your odds are so low that it's only last resort.

4 pointers shouldn't be added in my opinion because there is already enough trouble with 3 pointers so shooters could have way lower shooting percentages. Also I think it might lead to stuff like a 5 point line from half court.

The NBA should not add a 4 point line. The 3 point line should be moved back to 25 feet 9 inches, and it should be that distance around the arc's entire perimeter, which would eliminate the corner 3.

If they do this, they should remove the 3 point line. It will make the game more inside focused since there will be less incentive to take really long 2s. Bigs are gonna start playing like bigs.

Simple, just make shots beyond half court worth 4 pts. Then u allow possibility of last min comebacks while preventing teams from constantly chucking up unnecessary 4 pointers unless it's the final shot of the quarter.

Move the CURVED part of the 3-point line back 3' & make the STRAIGHT part of the line perpendicular to the sideline rather than parallel to it like it is now. Players should be forced to cover their tattoos with long-sleeve shirts & leggings. Make drastic increases in fines & suspensions against players who fight or argue with officials. Start the game & shot clocks the instant the ball touches the court when inbounding the ball. Players on the court should not be allowed to stand, cause a turnover & run out the clock at the end of games.

These players are so good they would simply adjust to the 4 point shot and they would become almost as common as three point shots. They may also change shot/scoring percentages making two point shots a net loss. So, we would lose much of the inside games. Additionally, the additional expansion of the scoring area of the floor might make defense all but irrelevant. The guys are too fast and quick to be left that wide open. Then what? Allow goal tending?

So first the gut defense. Now they create more offense options. I can see so many open drives to the lane. Since bigs will be pushed out even further. Help defense to slow the drive down won't get there in time either.

They don't need a four point line. They need to add a 3 to 4 second rule to prevent players from camping out at the 3 the same way they prevent players from sitting in the paint. They need to force more player movement so they can't keep doing the same offense over and over. All they do is drive and kick out 70% percent of the time to some guy who was sitting in the corner for 8 seconds of the shot clock.

This is ok as long as they narrow down the shaded/painted area back to the original 6 feet... this will even out things... 🤔

If you make a 4 point shooter shot, you gotta make a 4 point dunk shot. You dunk from the free throw +4. You shoot at the mid circle of center court +4. Even that craziness out. They're turning the nba into a circus.

I think they should widen the court and move the 3-pt line back a little bit. This would put more emphasis on the 2-pointers and bring back play in the paint and mid-range.

I agree with commenters that say a 4pt line will turn the league into more of a circus. However, I think that in 10-15 years after implementation, the gradual changes in coaching and tactical philosophy will change so that player talent/skillset will even out. Everyone's now training to shoot like prime Splash Bros., where consistent 3s makes you a star player. While good shooting is a good trait to have nonetheless, I'm pretty sure there's a given range at which even seasoned professionals will struggle to hit consistent 3s given an intense in-game scenario, and will be more physically taxing. There will surely be a trend of players pulling up at the 4pt line instead, but the hope is that some coach or some team will find that given the same airtight defense, it is more offensively efficient to have a team that can exploit the entire halfcourt in creating high percentage shots. Therefore, the 4pt line should be a few inches behind the typical long 3 range, where shots simply are no longer "high percentage" no matter the situation. Scoring 2s and 3s consistently SHOULD eventually be a more superior tactic than trying to score 4s on every play.

in quidditch they have a rule where the seeker ends the game by catching a snitch. why not make an equally difficult feat in NBA a game ender at any point? Statistically you should never shoot a three when you can shoot a 4. Same reason you shouldn’t shoot a long range 2 next to the three point line. The distance between 3 and 4 is so small that 3 point shot will become rare.

slippery slope. this is 5 minutes away from nba jam "0.5 extra points for a dunk. 0.8 extra points for a windmill dunk. if you dribble the ball between an opponents legs and proceed to throw an alley oop its 7 extra points. and if you score while standing under your own basket then its a jackpot and 100 points!" and when that isnt enough anymore next theres something like "knock out and opponent by throwing the ball on the backboard and hitting an opponents head - 250 points" 4point line would just leave the 3 point line in redundancy. if 3 pointers are too easy now just push the line further back. entertainment isnt the same as adding infinite bells and whistles on the court. its a sport under all the cotton candy fluff

I'm in the 4 point camp. Players are already shooting way behind the 3 point line. May as well get rewarded for the added difficulty. It's not like everyone can do it. So, it places a premium on having great shooters on your squad. I'm not thrilled that the game has turned into a 3 point contest. But I also think that there should be a dunk circle outside of the paint, where highlight dunks are awarded 2.5 points.

4pts would ruin the game as if you shot just 28% from the 4 point line that's better than the best half court offense in the NBA. Be prepared to see games with 35% FG on a regular basis, because players would just shoot low percentage shots that are rewarded 4 points. This would also further diminish the value of playing inside. 4pts line would not make basketball more entertaining, quite the opposite.

Why is a 4 pt. Line necessary ? There are too many points scored in games now. Basketball is supposed to be a team sport. A 4 pt. Line will destroy the NBA. Individual focus takes away from team play. There will be no need for young players to learn how to play basketball and all the skills involved. Bird and Magic took the skill level to a whole other level and saved the NBA.

it sounds like a ok idea but players with great shooting abilities like steph, dame and trae young would shatter defenses becuase it would expand gaps in defenses, simply basketball is basketball. you shouldnt change up the rules.

4 pointers would wreck the game. Move the 3 point line back 5-10 feet also expanding the courts width to accomodate. They already shoot deeper now a days, adding a 4 point line would be stupid, useless and annoying for all players and teams.

just make everyone happy...first quarter we play only by two's, 2nd the 3pt line gets added, 3rd we play by two's again in the 4th the 4pt line gets introduced and hand checking as well as shit talking is allowed .....lol
