Our spring turkey season is only abour 5 weeks away. Have a 16 ga 870 project gun to hang new wood on. If we get it up and running, maybe it could go to the woods. Was hoping to have it ready for the start of squirrel season memorial weekend.
I never even considered 16 gauge until watching this video. A couple of the shotguns I like are chambered in it, I see. I suppose the downside is that hulls are pretty scarce, but there is reloadable ammo out there. Which powder scale are you using? That’s a nice compact one. Really enjoyed the video. Thank you!
Actually hulls aren’t scarce at all, just out of stock at the moment but that doesn’t last long. No idea on the scale though, it was given to me years ago.
Hey Tyler, I really admire your Knowledge of reloading! For such a young man , and I don't mean anything at all bad about that ! With a lot of men your age are thinking and doing a whole lot of different things ! Nothing as serious as Reloading !!! Where some unsure or wrong information could result in a dangerous situation ! I have been reloading for some 30 years and not that I don't take it as seriously as you do , I do have a Very good working knowledge of Reloading ! Take Care and Be Safe
@@theshotgunscientists Yeah I missed my chance at the 24 years ago. Guess I’ll start looking again. I hear Barrett is producing a 3 in 16 gauge but there’s no ammo being made for them
I got a bag delivered last week as soon as they were available. I'm hoping that BP and Downrange keep putting them out in decent quantities. I was hoping to try to make my own flite control'ish wads with them. Still unsure whether to try to load them in remington express long range or their black game club. Even maybe load them in some purple federals, but can't find any data on either of them. Everything I've seen is for cheddite hulls. I mostly liked these wads because the shot cups allow larger payloads to be loaded. Most of my other few kinds of wads barely hold 1 oz of lead in the cup before filling up past the end of the cup trying to squeeze in the last 1/8 or especially 1/4 oz of shot. I don't really like filling up over the top of the cup because that tends to spread out more because the wad doesn't hold the excess shot after it leaves the barrel, so you lose a lot of long range accuracy using short cup wads that only hold 1 oz of pellets. That shouldn't be a problem with these wads. Even if I loaded 1-1/4 oz of lead in these, I'd still need to put a felt wad to get a decent crimp. Please try to make a video patterning these with some birdshot at longer distances with 1-1/8, 1-1/4, and 1-3/8 oz loads to see how they would do turkey hunting and for squirrel hunting when they're in top of those old growth oak trees 40 yards up in the air like we have here in Eastern Ky. I've seen a lot of guns that aren't able to get all the way up into the top of some of these trees without having to shoot multiple times enough to get lucky with a pellet or two knocking one out.
The black game load hull has a smaller internal capacity than all other 16 gauge hulls, they so fit the green ones though. You can use any data you find for the payload you want, just start a couple grains under max charges. That’s what I do. And yeah we can do that kind of video. We’ve got one filmed already with a 1.5 ounce load but it didn’t do as well as I hoped. Not enough cushion in the wad and it’s probably better to roll crimp it than fold it.
@Tyler McDavid You are absolutely correct about the rem black hulls. These wads are about as tight in the green express hulls too. They fit pretty well in the purple federal hulls though. I think that's what I'm going to try to load them in to see how they do. I have an old box of (late 80's/early 90's) winchester super x's that they may work in, but I kinda hate to shoot that box up. For some reason, I've been hanging onto that one just for nostalgia. It's OK that the last video didn't turn out as well as you liked. It's impossible to work up a great load and succeed every time. Sometimes it takes some tinkering with. Anyone that tells you differently is lying to you. I noticed that you load a lot of buckshot. I have some really good loads in 12 ga if you'd like them. I'd prefer to give you the recipes in private though so as to not get into youtube time outs and any more strikes if there is some way we could connect off of here.
i enjoyed your video, i got my mossberg 16 bolt with the poly chock when i turned 16 and love it. at 65 i have been reloading since 1985 for rifle and pistol and now i would love to reload for it... been trying to find a 16 gauge press, any advice on what all i need and where to find it?
Get the Lee load all press, they’re cheap and they work great. Ballistic products has all the wads you’ll need, and primers. Longshot is the best powder for 16 gauge, or green dot if you like mild loads. Get a good shotshell reloading manual too. And a reloaders scale from Amazon or eBay. Precision reloading currently has new primed hulls and you can get a bag of lead shot from several different suppliers.
Tyler, would you make up some Magtech brass shells with slugs & test for accuracey & mesure the power & distance please in a rifled berrel shotgun? I wish you were able to load slugs in youtube. I cannot hardly access rumble. Stay safe, & Merry Christmas to you & yours ✝️
So are there currently any factory magnum 16ga loads being made by anyone? Im sitting on some old Federals and even some older Remington loads I scrounged up. What ever happened to B&P out of Italy? Did they ever load a 1 1/4 ounce 16ga?
@@theshotgunscientists I was hoping that had changed recently. Your hand loads are real magnums at 1 1/2 ounce. So how many #6 pellets are in 1/8 ounce? The hot Federal 1 1/8 pheasant load might not be all that bad as a turkey load.
I did a little checking with Federal, and found that 1 1/8 ounce #6 loads are only 28-30 pellets less than 1 1/4 ounce #6. I would love to see a pattern comparison between the old 1 1/4 ounce Federal magnum and the new 1 1/8 ounce high speed upland load. I really wish Federal or Remington would pile onto developing high performance magnum 16 ga ammo. 16 ga could really take a jump forward.
