Great overview of the car, it will be interesting to see how it's priced when it's released in Canada. I think you nailed a key things that traditional automakers are getting right, they put "things" where they belong, rather than trying to get people to adapt to a new way. I naturally look at the side mirrors when considering a lane change, having the blind spot indicator in the mirror means I see it when I check the mirror. If I have to check the center screen, then check the mirror, then shoulder check, it's just more steps to miss/get wrong.

Yeah, I wish Tesla had blind spot monitoring indicators in the mirrors. I've had my Model3 for 5 months and I still can't get used to having to look at the center screen as part of the procedure. It feels very unnatural. It does have the lane change warning, so at least it will alert me if I'm about to merge into someone, but not before causing a bit of panic to the person I'm next to! I haven't tested this feature, so I don't know how close I have to be before it intervenes.

Pricing is $40-55K. Probably need to pay 55K to be comparable to the cheapest model Y. Also, the charging infrastructure is a deal-breaker and please stop saying 800V architecture is an advantage. Tesla is 400V and they have the highest sustained charging rates of anybody so clearly, 800V is just a marketing gimmick. Lithium-ion cells are 4v so 800V is really just the voltage between the charger and the power electronics of the car which is about 10ft of cabling and that's it.

The Telsa crowd IS the iPhone crowd. These are people willing to splash out extra cash unnecessarily for brand cache, regardless of the cost or actual value provided. Telsas are known to have poor paint quality, poor build quality, and poor reliability. Yet that's not stopping people from spending $10k-$20k more for a Telsa over other comparable electric EVs on the market. I personally can't wrap my head around spending more money on a crappier made product, but I suppose if you're affluent enough, wasting money isn't of much concern when you place more importance on image.

The experience suffers one way or another. Hyundai doesn't provide consistent OTA software updates, has the worse service centers/dealerships and when things go bad, corporate does whatever it takes to avoid responsibility. This is coming from someone who used to own a Kona EV with a faulty battery pack + Genesis G80. Tesla's experience is so much more smoother and easier. GO to a Hyundai dealership and you'll understand how much they suck.

01:00 You're beating on 15 year old Hyundai models like they were junk and you probably never owned one. Wife had an 05 Tucson for over 140k miles and it never gave her a lick of trouble. Nothing ever failed or broke. It required normal maintenance over that time and nothing more. Brakes and tires were replaced when needed and regular oil/filter changes and other periodic maintenance was performed as scheduled and it never quit, never left her stranded, and didn't nickle and dime her to death all while getting a respectable MPG compared to others vehicles available at the time. I prefer American made vehicles but I can not find fault with that 05 Tucson. If the IONQ 5 is as good it should do well and you are right, Tesla and the other manufacturers should watch out.

That V2L is something Tesla is lacking, and it could be more useful than many people can imagine. In a power outage it's powerful enough to keep your fridge and deepfreezer going. You can go camping anywhere and cook on a portable induction hob without having to haul a gas stove which you can run out of and is a potential fire hazard. You can even take a fridge with you and power it from the car. You even can run power tools and stuff at construction sites where there is no power (yet) without having to resort to fueled-powered generators. The biggest disadvantage compared to Tesla is the high-speed efficiency which is significantly lower. At lower speeds the consumption and range are very comparable. And the 800V charging is great but only if you have enough 800V-capable hyperchargers, which depends on where you live. In the US they are not that ubiquitous. In Western Europe they are sprouting out the ground like mushrooms however. That said still not the same as the supercharger network which is the best - yet they are taking steps to open that up to the public (already the case in the Netherlands where 10 SuC locations are open for all CCS EVs...). I still can't make up my mind! Doesn't matter though because I can't afford them anyway! :')

I do wonder when a manufacturer will produce a rather more basic model which retains the important stuff yet drops all those fancy features which add weight, complexity and a whole host of things to go wrong in the future. With an EV, and especially one designed for day-to-day uses, are things like the range, the ability to charge fast and not a whole bunch of complexity. I don't need some fancy powered flap for the charge point. It don't need electrically adjustable seats, and I don't require a 360 degree camera system for instance. It seems to me that manufacturers are intent on installing these, even on quite base models, to justify what are high prices. As for this car, then it looks good, but I prefer my interiors a little more old-fashioned and not some variant of Scandinavian minimalism. To me controls ought to have tactile feedback, so I'm not a fan of touch sensitive operation. Keep it for phones and tablets; with a car, I want to keep my eyes on the road as much as possible. When it comes to gadgets, I make an exception for safety related systems, such as collision avoidance. However, I also tend to believe that a lot of the semi-autonomous driving modes are potentially dangerous. They seem to be a recipe for inattention.

Bear in mind that he tested a Limited AWD. There are 2 trim levels below that, and the option to drop to RWD (so I'm going to guess there will be about a $10k spread between an SE RWD and a Limited AWD). The day of a more basic model will come, and after today's announcement by Toyota, it looks like they will be making the first plunge in that direction. It's still probably a couple model years off though. Given that Hyundai already decided a few years ago to put their chips in the electrification basket, they either won't be far behind, or have an ace up their sleeve they haven't played yet.

WhenTesla introduced the first Model S in 2012 I was convinced that EVs were the future for automobiles. When Tesla introduced the Model 3 in 2017 I was convinced that EVs could actually be cars regular people could afford without having to sacrifice comfort and convenience features. The downside of Tesla, however, is the fact that practically everything is controlled through the center touchscreen and requires one to relearn how to operate a car. It's doable but the learning curve is tough. Most auto manufacturers, in their haste to get entries into this new EV competition, have taken to grabbing one of their more popular models and replacing the ICE power with an electric motor and some interesting cosmetic changes. Even Hyundai is guilty of that. But with the new Ionic 5 they have done what Tesla did, by starting from scratch when designing this vehicle and questioning everything about what an EV really needs to be. I think they have pushed the envelope with some of the tech in this car and at the same time they have retained enough of what is familiar and useful in most cars today. They did not make some controls different just for the sake of being different and looking cool. I cannot wait to get a chance to try out the Ionic 5.

@@jillthompson6110 About Toyota, they aren't behind if the infrastructure isn't here yet; they are still the number one manufacturer for a reason - people are buying their cars despite their being "behind". As for electrification, there were 2 reasons for it - the gadgetification of the cars features, and the increase in efficiency. Most people want a car that goes from A-B without issue, and Toyota has had that nailed; the efficiency, while not BEV level, is still awesome with the hybrids they have, at 10s of thousands less. As they slowly get into the market you are going to have well manufactured vehicles at much lower prices, beating out Tesla in those markets that want those things. As with things like stick shifts, a more powerful engine, better radios, etc - there are a lot of people that don't care about those features, and want price per mile to be the lowest possible. BTW, Tesla better watch out - where they are competing there are manufacturers that beat them in the market they own right now - Hi performance gadgetized cars. This Ioniq is going to outsell the Tesla model Y very shortly, barring an insane price.

Its basically an enemies list, but not based on actual shots fired. Next, there is a gigantic difference between being against the regulations that destroy the market, which Toyota has justifiably owned, and being against electric vehicles. Are you the type that claim that electrics don't need subsidies, but ICE does? Well, a regulation that bans the sale of ICE is a message subsidy; as in electric wins because everything else was eliminated. The infrastructure to support electrification is still in the works. When the time comes for true 100% electrification Toyota will undoubtedly become a leader just like they have with ICE.one thing to note until recently Toyota infotainment straight up sucked but they’ve fixed that with their most recent iteration as seen in the new tundra and Lexus NX. Toyota is not always the fastest in innovation but when they come out with a new product it’s almost always going to be perfect and without major flaws- something other manufacturers can’t do. I was once a fan of Hyundai and Kia but with their recent engines issues and massive recalls I’ve stepped back to reassess. IMHO, IONIQ 5 vs TESLA MODEL Y... : Tesla great job, max speed, range especially leveraging its shape and weight. Still prefer, being in Europe, comfort. 99% of my trips are within 200kms one way. With the Hyundai IONIQ 5, I do look forward to ventilated seats, Android Auto, the roomy and comfortable interior, HUD, real blindspot monitoring, 360 camera. Also like reclining seats with foot rest and reclining console for arms rest, all electronic aids especially against collisions, automated parking (top trim), blind spot cams on dashboard when turning, V2L, sun shades integrated in back doors, electric sunroof shade, wide space available inside with good visibility through the back window etc. And the obviously efficient 400V to 800V internal battery inverter for fast charging. Other bugs with Tesla : Model 3 too low on the ground (Model Y is a perfected Model 3); door handles too complicated for kids and scratchy with persons with long finger nails; blue jeans bleed on those white seats.; simplistic navigation system(whereas under ANDROID AUTO, ABRP beta notably has settings for car weight, or TomTom Go 's use of all offline maps etc. ); quality of paint jobs ; mediocre internal lighting; loud alerts not compatible with family driving; max AWD weight capacity 300 Kg. Both car's A/C and other convenience functions(like Highway drive assistance for Ionic 5, Auto Pilot for Model Y and etc.) were always on during the test. 3. 4 drivers drove about 100km per person and checked the remaining battery at designated location. 4. The Ioniq 5 was the car I recommended for Nathan after disappointment with Kona and leaf reviews, issue reference needing more comfort and room for 6+ footers. Hope he got to drive that Ioniq for comparison of the huge difference in interior space versus Kona and leaf. Definitely a step up for 6+ footers.

Great review Tommy. A very real normal and recognizable tech EV that should go over well to the masses. I just wish Hyundai would make these in mass as opposed to almost boutique low quantity numbers,

8 years ago I would never want to buy a Hyundai, got one as a rental, ABUSED the shit out of it. That rental handled the abuse extremely well. Now I've owned one for about 5 years now, still happy with it. However I live in Canada, from what I can tell we have an excellent dealer experience here, so I might be a bit biased.
