So yeah, the Percy Jackson trailer has dropped, and whilst I was kinda hyped the more I rewatched it, the more worried I became. Let me explain.

I mean, just look at animes like attack on titain or demon slayer, disney has more than enough money to create something with the same level of quality and animation, but I've yet to see them do it, not that disney shows have bad animation, but it's just that there aren't many shows we're the animation itself is Enough to get people interested like one punch man or mob Psycho 100. I really wished the Percy Jackson show was animated.
@OpticalSorcerer

@@ONEPEAKFRFR It's not the issue of "having enough" money; corporations want to make sure they don't waste it, because money is money (which is ironic, considering how many terrible shows/films come out every year from Hollywood). I'd love it if Disney animation made a tv division specifically for high-budget, story-focused animated series, including adaptations like Percy Jackson.

Things I want from the PJ-show: *As much book-acuraty as possible. *Age-accurate casting. Check! *Casting new actors for the kids, not like the kids from "Stranger Things" or the new "It" or something. Check! *Early 2000s-songs. (Green Day, Linkin Park, Fall Out Boy, Aerosmith, Panic! At the Disco, etc.) *Early 2000s-chlothes. Eeeeh... *Bianca and Nico in the background of the Lotus Hotel and Casino. *Reyna and Hylla on Circe's island. *Annabeth mentioning her family in boston. *Percy's awesome and funny narration. Please let there be voiceover. *Please don't downplay Percy's, Sally's and Anabeth's abuse! Also: Don't downplay the character's trauma! DON'T HIDE THE FACT THAT GABE WAS ABUSIVE! *Cast multiple actresses to play Aphrodite!!! *Don't whitewash the characters! *Clarisse is plus size!! Don't cast a skinny actress! *Include Percy's dreams! *Include blue food and explain why it's important for Percy and Sally! *Riptide is NOT a clicky-pen. It's a capped pen! *For the second season: Show how Percy sort of refused to accept Tyson as his brother at first. Percy is my favourite fictional character of all time. Don't make him a boring, flawless, can't-do-anything-wrong Gary Stue. *Don't hide Hermes' guilt, his pain and his love for Luke. Also: Include May Castellan and her heartbreaking story. *Don't turn Rachel into a simp for Percy. She's a way better character than that. *Make a joke about how Chiron gave 3 kids 100 dollars to travel the entire country. *In the 3rd season (Titan's curse) when Percy, Grover, Zoe and Thalia are in San Francisco, show us kids in purple t-shirts fighting a monster for a second, just a glimse, befor the mist covers it and they're gone. *Mabey a cameo from uncle Rick.

From what I've heard the actor didn't want to change his hair and I think a wig would probably be more trouble than it's worth for a tv show where they'd rather the money goes to effects (good wigs are expensive props, to maintain as well + if he grows up during filming they're gonna have to replace it often). Also contact lenses look fake and editing his eyes would not only not be worth it but it would look even worse than contact lenses + contact lenses can hinder vision and move on the eye so it's really not ideal for a series to have these factors hindering the actor's work.

I think instead about worrying about race swapping, we should try to see if they preserve the godly similarities these kids are supposed to have with their parents like Athena's kids have stormy gray eyes and Poseidon's have green and Zeus' have electric blue. I hope they at least make it easier for us to believe that a certain god could be a certain kid's parents. I really hope they don't pull a Ring of Power where the races of both the parents is different from their child's race, like that makes NO sense.
@Gradestar10
@Gradestar10 10 месяцев назад
Actually, not all of Athena's children have their mother's gray eyes. George Washington, Auguste Bartholdi and Bea Wise were all demigods of Athena but none of them had gray eyes: Washington had blue-grey eyes, Bartholdi had brown eyes and Bea had dark ones. Athena herself in her official portrait has brown eyes. The same goes for the children of Zeus and Poseidon, not all of them inherit the eye color of their fathers. In fact, it was declared that in the Second World War the sons of Zeus and Poseidon were in charge of the winning side, therefore they had to be in charge of the U.S.A., England and China. So it means that Franklin D. Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, Joseph Stalin, George Marshall and Chiang Kai-shek were sons of Zeus some and of Poseidon others, but although some of them actually had eyes of different shades of blue like Zeus none of them had the sea green eyes of Poseidon.

Problem with cgi and race-swapping disappears, you can have as many poc and any kind of diverse voice casting and nobody (or few) would mind, more kids would watch it, and Disney could finally have their own "spiderverse-like" animation (cause everyone are now trying to animate 2D similarly, only Disney falls back when it comes to animation studios I believe)

I know it's kind of an unpopular opinion, but I dislike the actor for Annabeth. I think she actually would make a really good Hazel, but not really Annabeth. Mostly because of the obvious; Annabeth is decribed as being tan, yet the actor is black, she is described as having grey eyes, the actor doesn't and it doesn't look like they'll be using contacts (for any of the other actors either, which is a shame considering how a lot of the main demigods's eyes are described commonly and made to be unique colors in accordance to their parent), and she isn't blond (and no hair dye it seems either for anyone). The blond hair thing in pirticular I'm annoyed about because in the books Annabeth having blond hair is something that is mentioned as a sore point for her, or an insecurity. She is very smart and prides herself on her intelligence yet there's that "dumb blond" stereotype attached to every blond girl which she hates. It's not a vital detail or anything, but it's kind of telling for me: they really haven't gone for much book accuracy in terms of appearance besides proper age, and even a part of her characterization like that detail isn't really incentive for them to dye her hair blond, at the very least. Her gray eyes are also something pointed out a lot (by Percy himself, most of the time too), yet no contacts. It all just makes me worried for what it might mean for other things, from how they're adapting the book to the screen, and just general show quality. Not to mention, with Disney's track record of including political agendas and such in their shows and movies recently, I'm a little scared that they might change some of Annabeth's past struggles to something to do with race, which is really as far as you can get from her in the books. Racism was primarly something that Hazel and Piper dealt with, so not only would it be adapting Annabeth to the screen poorly, but it also kind of discredits Piper and Hazel's struggles with racism.

Riordan addresses annabeths race casting in an announcement on his website and how when he wrote the books the “dumb blond” stereotype was popular and so AnnaBeth subverted that. Now the stereotype doesn’t hold the same weight so it didn’t matter as much. I thought the casting was a bit ironic since people were so upset that they didn’t even dye Daddario’s hair for the movie adaptation (then did for the sequel). But Riordan’s announcement made me feel like they had really chosen the right actress who would embody Annabeth’s character regardless of physical appearance.

Second the reply above mine. Read through Rick riordans statement on the casting and see how you feel. As far as the subversion of the dumb blonde stereotype and concern over changing it to something about race - would that really be so awful? The very same concept of subverting stereotypes/first impressions can very easily be achieved by tying it to how black women are perceived as less capable/smart. If she was the best candidate for the job what’s wrong with having her as annabeth?

Yeah, I’ve kinda lost all hype for this. Which sucks cause when this was announced, I was elated. But between the casting, the dull look of the show and the fact that it’s in live action and not animation, I’m just not that interested anymore. I just don’t understand why they couldn’t have made this an animated show where you can have all the characters be accurate to the books and you can still cast whoever you’d like.
@saulthechicanootaku
@saulthechicanootaku 10 месяцев назад
The reason is that Rick Riordan thinks that live-action "holds more weight" than animation and because he feels it'll turn off viewers, who are already kids anyways, and they love cartoons. If that's true, how was the Mario movie successful?
@saulthechicanootaku
@saulthechicanootaku 10 месяцев назад
@CipherRage-tp5ql because, and I still don't comprehend why, Rick thinks animations may not attract a bigger audience and that live-action carries "more heft and cache." The first point is just ridiculous because this is Percy Jackson we're talking about, as in a million dollar franchise with millions of fans, so how can an animated show not be popular enough? Plus? Live-action carries more heft and cache? Tell that to the people who work at Studio Ghibli, or anyone who worked on Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, then we'll talk, Riordan.

Yh my biggest concern about this series is their portrayal of dyslexia and adhd. it makes me uneasy knowing that there’s likely few in the main cast who r actually dyslexic and or adhd (I get that it’s difficult to find good child actors, and probably even harder for neurodivergent kid actors, but can’t stop feeling like this)… I trust that Ricks likely doing his best to make sure we get solid, accurate representations (hoping they’ve got specialists and actually neurodivergent ppl who’ve worked with the actors), but he isn’t perfect. Dyslexia and ADHD aren’t just “bad at reading and writing” or “can’t sit still or focus”, they impact ur entire life. They mean u might have delayed processing, hand-eye-coordination issues (which tbh makes the whole “adhd is ur battle reflexes” kinda funny, though u could chalk that up to hyper-focusing which adhders r prone to). For me, at least, how whether I like this show or not will come down to the dyslexia and adhd rep. If it’s done well then it has to chance to raise acceptance (awareness doesn’t equal acceptance, take queer phobia for instance). But if the rep is crap… it could add to stereotypes As a side note; I hope we get scenes where Annabeth’s dyslexia and adhd are more apparent, because girls can be neurodivergent and disabled too, it’s not just a “boy thing”

That is a very good point! If I remember correctly, one of the reasons Rick made all the demigods neurodivergent is to give his child a protagonist in an epic story to relate too, since he is neurodivergent too (I read an interview a looooonnnngggg time back so idk if all the facts are on point but I remember this particular thing being personally very important to him). So I have faith that they are going to do it justice in the show.

I'm honestly slightly upset at the casting choices for this show. Annabeth looks nothing like how she's described in the book, with tanned skin, blond, curly hair, and grey eyes as long as a tall physique, it's almost like Disney decided to change her looks completely. Obviously, I'm not too bothered with this as long as they portray Annabeth's personality right, then I'm totally neutral. I can't say I admire/favour the sudden change, but there's literally nothing I can do about it, which is sort of a bummer. I get that disney is attempting 'diversity' but at least try not to change original characters skin. Percy- I don't mind his casting too much. I'm happy that they at least got the ages correct (unlike the movies that shall not be named). There is only one thing I'm sort of unhappy about. It is the fact that they made his- jet black hair, as described in the book- a blonde colour. I prefer dark haired Percy Jackson, since it is literally iconic. I also prefer his hair to be dark due to the fact that Poseidon also has dark hair, and Percy is said to be a spitting image of his father- Poseidon. However, if they make him OP, and have a good personality (sassy and fun according to the books) then that can make up for his looks. Grover- Honestly Grover seems like the only fully valid casting here. By watching and analysing the trailer, it seems that Disney hasn't actually gone to far off with the castingfor Grover. The only 'bad' thing I would have to say is the fact that there is no wispy beard/chin as weird as that might sound. In the books, Grover is described as having a wispy/thin beard on his chin due to the fact that he is a satyr. Obviously, I don't mind it too much as nothing can be perfect, and I'm happy at the accurate representation of Grover. Now, all they NEED to do is make his personality correct. Grovers personality is extremely important as it is unique and quite special to his character aspects and developments throughout the series. The other castings don't seem too bad. The only one I am slightly worried for is Ares. His casting looks quite different from how he was in the book so I'm not sure what to expect. (ALL IN ALL, no hate what-so-ever to the actors of this show. I'm sure they'll do amazing. And if they don't then it's Disney's fault.)

These books were written over 16 years ago, and the only character that isn't white in the first five books (from memory, could be wrong) is Beckandorf. Finding child actors with suitable personalities and skills willing to take on a role that may extend into adulthood that can fluently speak english is hard enough, let alone adding specific appearance conditions. Annabeth is the only character in the first five books whose appearance has a shred of significance; that being that she looked stereotypically dumb [early 2000s blondes are dumb stereotype]. This belief is kind of outdated, so Rick himself did us the curtesy of modernising it. I would not be surprised in the slightest if her prejudice for being blonde was changed to being black, more befitting in this day and age. I'm assuming your nitpicking means you've read the books and presumably liked them to an extent to have emotional stake in this series being true to the books. Rick Riordan, the author, handpicked the actors he thought would best represent the roles he created. I'm a little skeptical myself, but I won't criticise an unreleased series about a character that looks a little different as per described to the books. I would much rather Annabeth be strong-willed, sassy, confident and passionate than be blonde. Have a little faith. 😄

 @siroreo717 I've only seen the first sentence and I'm already thrown off, though i like reading long opinions. It DOESN'T MATTER the book was written 16 years ago. First, character descriptions are in a book for something. Second, many old creations, not only books, are very old, some older some younger, but nonetheless are loved across generations AND backgrounds of all kinds, and people are in love in THIS that was written 16 years ago, with THOSE characters that where depicted THERE. Modern adaptations tend to make changes where it's not only not needed, but where no one wants them, and additionally usually make them terribly, and then are surprised that the fanbase doesn't like what they issued. If they sat and thought for a second, and cared a little bit, they could get way better out of this. But today we have a weird trend of shaming fans and losing money, for some reason.
@lojanta

Also if they make a "stupid blonde" stereotype into a "racist" problem, a huge part of the audience will hate it, because they are tired of this in the media. This would indicate that Annabeth will be like in the movies, but leveled up in a bad way, which means a package of a black + woman + the strongest phisically + the smartest + rude (especially for men), with no flaws whatsovever (at least in show's writers' mind). In short, a modern insufferable Mary Sue. They probably thought they could get away with all that because they can use book Anabeth's character as a shield, but they hit the wrong time and if the first episodes will even slightly indicate that their Annabeth is mentioned above Mary Sue, the numbers for the show will drop quickly.

My biggest problem with annabeth isnt even her race - the actress just doesnt give me annabeth vibes at all. In my mind annabeth is this super athletic, gifted person that makes percy look like a scrub in comparison. Shes taller, smarter, stronger, etc and intimidating. Part of percys glow up throughout the 5 books is him sort of catching up to her. This girl seems too nice and is already smaller than percy. I know its hard to find talented people fitting a specific description, but the end result is someone who i dont see as annabeth.

I'm upset about Annabeths casting. IT'S NOT BECAUSE SHE'S BLACK!!! It's because she's not blonde. I know that's a stupid thing to get upset about, but I feel like being blonde was part of her character because she was so smart, and blondes are usually portrayed as stupid. And in the books people mention this. They could have cast a black actress with blonde hair or dyed this actresse's hair, and I would be fine with it because I don't think her race had anything to do with her character. But as a blonde myself, I like seeing smart blonde people in the media since most of the time they are portrayed as just dumb and pretty.
@Pandie2828

Right? For the most part they're either stupid or mean. Also beyond just Annabeth the blond and grey eyed combo was a staple of being an Athena kid. I hope they will keep that part of her character, overcoming stereotypes, but instead replace it with her ethnicity. It keeps her character progression the same as the book and also modernises it a little. I won't criticise her for not being blonde unless they don't do anything else to make up for the part of her character. Some of the best performances in history were heavily criticised before release. I would much rather have an awesome capture-the-flag scene where you see Annabeth's intelligence, confidence and dominance in battle clearly represented than her just being blonde and grey-eyed. I'm hoping it'll be a well-choreographed scene that will leave me agape with nothing to say but "Heck yeah, that's Annabeth" She may not look the part, but depending on how well she PLAYS the part will make or break her performance. And considering Rick has handpicked her and supported her all the way, I have hopes she will be great.

what i generally hate about live action is that it can never capture imagination like your mind can when reading a book. so any scene will usually fall flat compaired to how someone pictured it in their minds eye. not to mention changing the characters in my opinion you should be able to pick the character out as soon as you see a picture of them with no context, otherwize why even make a character. dont forget this fandom also changed the official character artist because they hated the interpitations. i personally think the absolute best way to go with books is animation. take how to train your dragon for example, sure they changed the whole story but overall fans loved it because they didnt do small changes they completely made it their own film and the animation perfectly suited the style of this movie. personally i believe making an animated series would have done the percy jackson books alot more justice.
@danielloader3351
@danielloader3351 8 месяцев назад
Yeah, I absolutely agree. It's a double-edged sword to me. On one hand, if they got it all right, then when I read the books, I'll see the actors and the sets from the show in my mind but otherwise it will inevitably be a letdown. Live action is objectively more difficult to make as dynamic and accurate as animation. The main appeal is that it brings the story to life (but this only works, as I said before, if they get the sets and cast, props, shots etc. perfect). As an example, the Harry Potter movies certainly weren't perfect adaptations by any means, but they were great in casting, and set design and because of this I see the Hogwarts as well as the actors from the films when I read the books. The further this show strays from the book description and the image we make in our heads, the less it will feel like Percy Jackson. The main issues with animation are that it receives less of an audience most likely, and also if it ISN'T book accurate it has literally nothing going for it. All we can hope is they get everything else right, but even then, just by getting the visuals wrong, they've dug themselves into a hole that limits how successful they will ultimately be.

This is the problem with making books into movies. The author describes every small detail of the charactor from their eyes to their skin etc. and then (in some cases like this one) makes those details relevant to the story. The issue of Annabeth with the blonde hair [blondes are dumb] and grey eyes [her mother Athena's eyes] are relevant in building her charactor (more the hair than the eyes). You can also argue that Percy's hair and eyes and Grover's race should also be as their charactor's in the book but at least those details dont get brought up much (ones that i remember are: 1 medusa identifing percy as posidon's son through his eyes 2 grover having textured hair helps hide the horns ) Therefore in my opinion the actor of annabeth should at least wear a blonde wig to stay true to the charactor or the story should just abandon the plot points where annabeth's hair is mentioned(which is what it looks like is going to happen). Its just a shame that it(the hair) wouldn't be addressed in the movie as that detail is what made annabeth's charactor according to me as she is always trying to prove herself which leads her to make multiple decisions throughout the series.

I believe they were going more for an updated stereotypes. Instead of Annabeth's intelligence being insulted because of her blonde hair, I'm guessing they're going to change it completely to some form of racial prejudice due to her ethnicity. The reason her being blonde was significant is because she was treated like she wasn't intelligent because of it. I hope they make use of Annabeth's actor having dark skin as a way to create that same character moment, just with a different stereotype.

@@siroreo717 That's not an uptade at all, if anything, that's a downgrade. My biggest worry is that they don't even look like the characters from the books... Annabeth looks more like Hazel than Annabeth, Chiron looks nothing like he's described in the books, Percy looks like a young Jason or Luke and Grover is... actually good? He's the only one I'm actually ok with... Also wasn't Annabeth and Percy on team blue in the books with Luke while Clarice and her siblings on team red? Why do they always fuck that up? It really isn't that hard... I'm getting sick of the race baiting and changing particular characters to fit modern narratives and it's not just this, but almost EVERY medium that comes from a source like a book or a comic does this. Can we get book accurate characters for once that aren't race swapped or actually looks like how they're described in the books? Also this looks more like a modern adaptation than early 2000's, Disney really missed out there. I wasn't too hyped about certain other scenes either like the Poseidon cabin for instance... in the books it's described as low and long and it DIDN'T have any decorations at first not whatever Disney did. Not until after Percy moved in and finished his first quest. Or Mrs. Dodds... when she turns into a Fury, it looks like it's outside near the fountain that got Percy in trouble with her in the books. Then going to Thalia's tree... in the books, it's supposed to be a freaking PINE TREE. That tree looks nothing like a pine tree... It feels like Riordan wanted to do the books justice, but had his hands tied with Disney trying to fuck things up and not caring about the source materials as usual, or he wasn't as involved and forceful as he could've been.

honestly, this is the series that could have saved Disney, now... it feels like they're just letting Rick play a bit with their assets. Honestly feels like a Treasure Planet situation to me. You say not to dwell on the casting but seriously, did they even try finding someone that looked like Annabeth? Annabeth is a major roll in the story and a fan favorite if I'm not mistaken. I'm getting the feeling Disney pushed some woke stuff at Rick. I feel like it might be decent but at the same time, I can see this come out and vanish just as quickly as Disney becomes too focused on competing with other companies instead of focusing on what it already has. Seriously, I think One Piece proved if you stay true to the source and make something good, people will come watch it, but any spit on a series is enough to make fans question it. Disney is a sinking ship and I can't see this saving it at all which is sad considering how good the books are.

Le sigh, could they really not have kept the warm tone-cool tone contrast between Percy and Annabeth? Maybe given the actor a hair color swap? Some wigs & contacts? Like, please guys Percy looks too much like a son of Zeus right now. That's original Perseus, not our percy. And Annabeth really needs her defining blonde hair and stormy grey eyes. She literally talks about how people judge her as a dumb blonde sometimes, that's a part of her character. I'm mostly upset about them giving Percy blonde hair and blue eyes. That is very much for Jason, not Percy. Annabeth does still have some of the annabeth vibes thankfully, but Percy? Not at all our mischievous lad. He looks too.. nice, too innocent. Give me one look at that little lad and tell me you would blame him for a bus crash, come on. I don't mind the casting for Percy or Grover, but the race thing for Annabeth rubs me the wrong way. I don't mind race-swapping in most cases, like Grover doesn't bother me whatsoever, but that's because Grover's race really didn't matter at all in the plot of the books. Annabeth being blonde and the whole dynamic of her breaking stereotypes and even some jokes that are played off of it I thought made so much sense throughout the book's constantly breaking stereotypes (such as Hades not being the villain, Hera being a freak despite modern depictions of her in media, etc.). It definitely won't ruin my experience watching the show (unless it's one of these virtue-signaling case and they're just using her for her skin which is completely unfair for this young actress) because as you said, she looks like a promising actress overall. Almost every ethnicity is present in Camp Half-Blood and Annabeth is defying the "dumb blonde girl" stereotype in the books BUT honestly the looks of the characters don't matter as much as GOOD storytelling and GOOD visuals for the environments and monsters and not look like it's all shot in front of a green screen.

I also expected the show to come out sometime 2024, but I just realized that December 20 is when the subscriptions for the current Disney+ $1.99 for 3 months deal ends - it's banking on renewals for Percy Jackson to boost Disney+'s profits before the year runs out.

sue me or cancel me but the casting for the percy jackson movies would have been really good if they were just younger ; they just had the vibes and looks of the characters (other than brunette annabeth)

I feel like they didn’t even try. When I saw that Annabeth was gonna be black, I can’t say I was pleased, but they can always braid lighter hair into her braids. But did that do that? According to the trailers, no. I gave up on Rick a long time ago. With how poorly written the sun and the star was, I think Rick should turn in and enjoy retirement. Thank you Rick for the amazing BOOKS you wrote. You can be done now. It’s ok. You accomplished a lot.

I'm disappointed because, for the most part, in the trailer everything looks exactly as described in the books, and it's so cool seeing everything just as you imagine it...EXCEPT the 3 main characters. They could be fantastic actors, it doesn't matter--there's no shortage of kids who can act who actually look like the book descriptions. Don't get me wrong, they're adorable. But to pay so much attention to detail to everything looking just like the book (including them being age accurate) and then completely dropping that standard for the MAIN CHARACTERS is beyond disappointing.

For the Avatar: the last airbender live action series, they went out of their way to find characters that were the exact same age, race, body type, etc. as the characters from the original tv show. There has to be TONS of 12 year old blondies with gray eyes in the filming industry. It can’t be that hard.

Lots of people are complaining about the casting and how they aren’t accurate to the books, while I mostly agree, for Annabeth there could be an reason she looks that way (that sounds so rude oml) it’s mentioned in the books that Annabeth doesn’t like the fact she has blond hair as it gives her the ‘dumb blond’ stereotype, an explanation on why she has brown hair is that she dyes it so that people won’t stereotype her as a dumb blond. For her eyes it’s also mentioned at lest like once that Medusa knew she was a daughter of Athena because she had gray eyes, what if it stay hidden from monsters (even though it’s mentioned that she hadn’t left camp before Percy came to camp) we know that there are features of demigods the make it easier for monsters to identify them, maybe she uses contacts. I’ve already seen fan art of Percy having blond roots, maybe Annabeth had blond roots (later in the story probably) then we could still have blond Annabeth. As for Percy being blond we know Sally had a rebellious side towards Gabe, Percy did too (by going along with his mother’s retaliations towards Gabe) what if Gabe (unmentioned in the books) didn’t like blonds, (or he liked them or was one before he was bald, and dyed Percy’s hair) and in retaliation Percy dyed his hair blond and maybe even at some points blue. Grover, I have no complaints, casting is pretty good, I just hope his personality is the same as the books (not like he was in the Peter Johnson movies) Ares is the one I’m most bugged about, he doesn’t give me war god vibes, he’s supposed to be jacked (right? my memory is terrible and it’s like 1:00 am rn) in the official art he has black hair and no facial hair, this version of Ares doesn’t fill me with rage and anger or violent thoughts, he gives me weird guy vibes.

Ikr.. it’s just that annabeth was the proof that blondes aren’t dumb and it totally rebunked that stereotype . Also it showed her growth and character development later in the series as she realizes she is smart and didn’t need anything else(mark of Athena) I feel like Disney just casts ppl to appear inclusive but being inclusive DOES NOT a mean being colourblind

I'll only complain about the Annabeth casting if they cast non African-American actors to play Athena and Frederick Chase. It would not make sense from a narrative standpoint. It would be like casting a family with an African-American mom, a Japanese father and the biological child is of Indian origin. It makes no sense at all

honestly. I don't even see WHY, they needed to race swap her. the riodanverse was already diverse as hell. we literally have hazel, who's African-American. Leo, who's Hispanic American, Frank, who's chinese, Charles Beckendorf was black. and others.

It will never not be frustrating to me that in a series where each character was intimately detailed, and each detail had a specific purpose to connect the character to the world around them, that they would take the liberty to just throw that out the window for cheap diversity. This is literally a series filled to the brim with diversity as is. Hephaestus and his children were always described as being black. Zeus and his children were aryan, Poseidon and his kin were tan with dark hair, Hades has the pale skin and jet black hair. It was all purposeful and they intentionally butchered it for DEI points. All the Greek gods were literally greek. You have a whole ethnic branch out from there. What the hell were they thinking.

honestly, The movie version of percy is almost spot on to the image I had in my head when I was reading the books. Grover somewhat works but tbh I feel like even regardless of the race bs the 3 main kids were just casted badly. I think the movie did it perfectly. I do think though having it as an episodic series is a better call. I was super disappointed in the movies at how they skipped past all the cool camp moments like all the beef with ares dorm and the capture the flag, and they just zoom to like the end of the story. I'm willing to give it a shot but Disney stuff these days have just been let down after let down.
