There is a Ryan ST at the Temora Aviation Museum in flying condition in NSW, Australia, and was the flight school’s commandants plane during the Second World War. Temora was a pilot training school in WW2 and the Ryan PT was sent out there as a candidate as a training plane. Needless to say the DH Tiger Moth was used and the Ryan PT was given to the commandant for his use, as trying to ship it back to the USA during the war was not economically practical, so it stayed.

I was privileged as a 9 year old to fly in a Ryan PT 22 5 BANGER radial engine. My father was in a partnership with 2 other men ( this about 1957 ). It was displayed for a short period of time at the San Diego Aerospace Museum. I am sure it was the same airplane is that the paint job was that of the rays of the rising sun.It was a fun ride.

Prospective builders need to add up ALL the costs associated with this kit including the engine, prop, instruments, assembly jigging and all the other extra thing needed to assemble this aircraft. Those costs can quickly double or more the basic kit price of $43K (plus tax & shipping). Just for comparison I checked out Ryan PT-22's for sale and found a freshly annualed "museum quality" 1941 PT-22 for $97K. Besides not spending a year or more building a 95% replica, for an extra $10K or less you can fly the real thing which will increase in value over time. That said, this does appear to be a well designed and manufactured kit including the steel (not aluminum) flying wires.
@timbertigeraircraftinc.mon2627
@timbertigeraircraftinc.mon2627 2 года назад
You are correct that there are additional expenses. Average cost to complete as of right now is 65-85k, depending on the engine chosen (Aeromomentum AM15, vs used Rotax 912uls vs new Rotax 912uls, for example). However, keep in mind the PT-22 is a vastly different airplane than the one we replicated, the ST. From both a structural and performance comparison, they are apples and oranges. So the real deal...the ST, not the PT-22, is going to run you anywhere from 150k for a beater to 500k+ for an award winner. Again, vastly different planes. The next thing to consider when comparing this kit to a PT-22 is performance. The prototype is already beating the performance of a PT-22 in just about every aspect. We're about 500-600 lbs lighter than a PT-22 and over 200 lbs lighter than an ST. Hope this info helps shed some light on the comparison.
@timbertigeraircraftinc.mon2627
@timbertigeraircraftinc.mon2627 2 года назад
For more information regarding the Ryan ST vs PT-22, I suggest an article called "The Beauty and the Beast" by Norm Goyer. In addition, pilot reports on the two planes will turn up a lot of good information. With the ST being a civilian sport plane and the PT-22 being a military trainer with a reputation as a "biter", it's surprising how very different they are.

The flying one in the us was used in an episode of MASH titled 5 o'clock Charlie. The funny thing is the guy tossing bombs at the was not flying the plane. The actual pilot was hunched down in the aft cockpit. The pilot was also the owner of the plane, Don Burkett. He kept the plane in a hangar at the long beach airport. He was asked to fly the plane because the studio's pilot didn't have experience with flying this type of aircraft. 😄

We've already surpassed the published top speed of the original, but might explore a higher Vne one day. Given the class of plane, however, that isn't a priority and may not happen. @timbertigeraircraftinc.mon2627
@timbertigeraircraftinc.mon2627 2 года назад
We are doing one now with a radial. The ST never did come with a radial, but the military converted a few PT-20s to Kinner power. That led to the development of the much more cantankerous PT-22. Unlike the ST and PT-20, the PT-22 has a reputation of being a handful.

The ST-M is basically a PT-20 built for the foreign market. Good airplane. The reason the PT-22 became such a handful was the introduction of wing sweep with an approximate 300 lbs heavier empty weight...with no increase in power or wing area. It also had more drag and still retained zero washout. The ST series, including the PT-16, PT-20, and ST-M was a far better plane, in my opinion.

Those wires are made just for this purpose and they are an industry standard. He didn't go down to Home Depot and buy a roll of aluminum wire. Stainless would be too heavy and would sag in this application. You would have to put so much tension on stainless it could cause warping or failure of itself/other parts. As for the body skins, they are pre-stressed not stretched. Sounds the same but a little different. Also, the body panels are doing a different job from the aluminum wires. The panels and bulkheads work together to create a rigid body without a frame. The wires only keep the wings rigid. That's why he called it a semi-monocoque. Onlooker, "Why are you stripping all of that wire?" Builder, "I'm building a plane and I need it to hold my wings up." Onlooker, "Haven't you heard of Red Bull?" Builder, "Nope, but I am going to use the stripped-off plastic to hold up my pants."😉

It's 95% scale. The 5% difference was absolutely critical in getting the required performance out of today's small powerplants. Also, it's counterintuitive, but the smaller size creates clearances in key places and makes the cockpit more comfortable. At 100% scale, we'd have ended up with a more expensive, less comfortable plane with unacceptable performance.

That's somewhat misleading. Yes, somebody can drop that much into it if they splurge on everything. The sky is the limit on any project. But the vast majority of builders will have far less than that into the plane. I estimate as low as about 65k with an average being about 75-85k. Also keep in mind the plane is designed for up to 115kts cruise. It all comes down to having the right powerplant/prop combo for that. We used the Rotax 912uls, as it is the industry standard, with a prop designed to cruise at a higher rpm than we use. Our prototype has been tested beyond the published top speed of the original Ryan ST-A, which will likely run you 250-500k...if you can find one.
