Sorry for the gap from the last film, we had Xmas and all that....
Here I have a butchers at the new Sonos Port. I look at ;
-its features
-how it differs to the outgoing Connect streamer
-I compare it sonically to some competition including the Allo Digi One Signature www.13thnote.n... . See the video of the Allo here ; www.13thnote.n...
- as well as a Yamaha WXC-50 ; uk.yamaha.com/...
I also discuss its lack of hi-res and the ho-hah about Sonos at the moment and whether it should affect your buying decision
Oh and not to mention, we make proper coffee in this film!
All my reviews tend to be in written form plus I post opinion pieces to my website. Check it out at www.13thnote.net

My in-laws Sonos Connect has finally packed up, so this review was a useful reference when they are looking at the Port. Many thanks

Excellent review and instructional, as always! Thank you! My plan is to use the Sonos Port to link my Sonos Sound Bar and Sonos Subwoofer, which are connected to my TV to my Buchardt i150 receiver and Buchardt S400 MkII speakers so I can listen to all either with the TV sound or streaming music from my Bluesound Node.

The Connect works great. The only reason to upgrade is that they’re making you do it. They could support it if they wanted to.

Great review Simon and very much needed. Personally I went from a Sonos connect to a Bluesound Node 2i which gave me a big jump in sound quality but added needed functionality even the new port is missing. I haven't compared them, but suspect the Bluesound is better than the port.

Thanks for the review. I'm glad that the Port is at least better than the Connect. I think therefore I will take advantage of the current trade-in 30% discount deal.

Great review & Thanks for your very detailed review. Would like to know if this unit works the same as the Bluesound 2i ? Also would like to know if the present Sonos connect unit would able to play hi resolution music with a firm ware update in the future or does it mean it it’s a hard ware update - thanks in advance- Regards

I've got a Port feeding into an old Cambridge Audio amp, and Dali Oberon 5 speakers, and have been toying with getting an external dac like a Mojo 2, Schiit Modi or similar. Do you think it's worth doing? Sounds like you think the Port's dac holds it's own anyway.

Thanks so much for this excellent review. I've been sitting on the fence over the port because it seems so much to pay out for an upgrade on the connect. Your comments on the upgraded DAC plus the fact that it supports Airplay might just swing it!

SingleTrack66 hi there question for you ........do you just adjust volume in the application using the slider
@SingleTrack66
@SingleTrack66 4 года назад
Coco yes it works fine. Straight into my old five channel Linn power amp. This has active crossovers which then go to my Linn speakers. And the fifth channel is to the active sub. To be fair this means I was able to tweak the sound when I initially set it up. But the answer is yes, you can go straight to a power amp and adjust the volume in the app.

Hi, does Sonos still not do hi res. If it did, would this work with a high end Dac, if so would be a cheaper alternative to say an Auralic Aries. I say this as I’m planning moving from my vega Dac, but auralic getting far too expensive, but I really enjoy there app, easy & simple interface like Sonos

Do you have to have a Sonos Bluetooth speaker or can you pair the Port to a non-Sonos wireless speaker while playing from a stereo system? I’m looking for a way to bridge streaming from my phone into my Hi-Fi system and Bluetooth speaker at a different place in my home in low latency
@13thnotehifireviews7

You don’t need a speaker to use port so no. It will do what you ask and as you have streaming services / uPnP streaming, you don’t really need Bluetooth

The only reason I use Sonos is for the alarm functions, as I use these in the bedrooms. None of the other options (except the Bluesound Node) offer any alarms. I wish other manufacturers would add alarm functions to their control apps.

I want to replace my Node2i that currently runs into Denafrips Ares2 with the Sonos Port. Not because I think it will be better, but because I don't want to deal with Tidal etc. I just want to use Apple Music everywhere again (including CarPlay, where Tidal sucks massively)...

I really appreciated your excellent review/analysis of the Sonos Port. As someone changing from the Sonos Connect to the Sonos Port, I would be very great full if you wouldn’t mind recommending a reasonably priced DAC (200 to 800 dollars US) for the express purpose of going from Port to Acurus passive preamp/amp to 2 floor standing Vandersteen speakers.

@@13thnotehifireviews7 Thnaks for your reply. Heres where Im stuck...reviews on Sonos app are great...bluos not so good. So even if the Bluesound is overall better sounding...if the app is crap...Id be annoyed. So I think Im goong for the Port. Id need two of them for my 2 rigs. One the Port would connect to a Nuprime Dac-10....and the other my Peachtree audio nova220se. Considering Im using external Dacs.....would you agree the Port will be plenty fine?
@13thnotehifireviews7
@13thnotehifireviews7 4 года назад
Ryan Schipp it’s a good choice Ryan whatever way you look at it. I don’t think there is much wrong with Bluesound apps. Personally I’d still go with the bluesound as the price is next to damn it with the port, and you get higher res, plus the flexibility of Roon use with bluesound, which even though a subscription service, pretty much trounces all other apps and music. Even if you aren’t using the dac you may at some point, and it’s a slightly better implementation in my view, so the bluesound possibly gives better implementation. But then if you want integration or adding convenience type speakers and meshing all together, Sonos is extremely good. So it’s horses for courses.

You know what, I’m going a different way. I’m, not paying $450 or even $350 to replace my Connect, I’m selling my entire Sonos system and going with Amazon. The way I see it, Sonos needs Alexa, Alexa doesn’t need Sonos. I can replace my Play1s with Echos for a lot less. I’m almost there already. So goodbye Sonos! You can have your overpriced, forced upgrades, I’m out!
