FYI: Medan is the name of a city located on the northern part of the island of Sumatra, Indonesia and there was a rumor that in Medan waters, there's this ship called the SS Ourang Medan that went missing in 1940s but sometimes, usually when a storm came up, this ship can be seen passing nearby fisherman's boats. So it's basically a Flying Dutchman (not only because its a ghost ship, but the ship itself were owned by the Dutch) Edit: I lived in Medan btw and for the story of the game they went with the theory that everyone onboard were killed by a deadly hallucinating gas

Medan is indeed a place! Specifically in Indonesia, where I'm from! This game is inspired by a story of a ghost merchant ship from Medan. SS Man of Medan (or SS Ourang Medan) was a ship that sailed from a small unnamed Chinese port (as you can see in the beginning) to Costa Rica. Back then, when Indonesia was still called the Dutch East Indies, they sent this ship but then got a chilling SOS message that said the whole crew was dead. Silver Star crew found the ship barely even damaged but littered with corpses. There were no survivors nor traces of injuries on the corpses. The crew noticed that all of the corpses died with a face of fear (gaping mouth and widened eyes) while staring straight forward. But nobody knew how they died. As the crew was about to tow the ship to a nearby port, a fire broke out which made them evacuate. While evacuating, the crew saw SS Ourang Medan explode and finally sink. No further investigations were held since then. I think this story is really interesting since I'm a fan of mystery. I hope this catches your eye and helps you hehe.

as far as the effects of the gas, it appears to cause symptoms in the following order: Elevated heart rate, spike in blood pressure, hallucinations, heart attack, death. So this gas LITERALLY scares victims to DEATH!

Man of Medan is based of famous ghost ship story of Orang Medan (so yeah, its the name of the ship. Orang or Ourang for english speaking people means man or people) AFAIK based on the legend, some ships at the time receive a distress call from Orang Medan. The message that they received told them that the crew of Orang Medan is mostly dead and that the messenger himself is dying. The message end abruptly with some jumbled words at the end, leaving the impression that the messenger died while trying to send the messages. After the rescue ships managed to pin point the location of Orang Medan, they then decide to board the drifting dead ship to check it out. There, they found her deck filled with dead bodies. However, there's something very unusual about the bodies. It's as if they froze to death while showing expression of fear on their faces. After thorough investigation, the rescuer found out that even the crew member that work in the boiler room also froze to death in their places despite the temp of the room was pretty high. The rescuers then decide to try to tow back Orang Medan to a port so that they can found out what exactly is the cause of Orang Medan's crews death and do further investigation until suddenly a mysterious explosion happen in one of the boiler room and the ship was sinking fast. The rescuers are forced to let go of the sinking ship. Some interesting thing around this story is that that there's no record of a ship named Orang Medan in the company that supposed to own the ship even tho it is believed that it's because Orang Medan isn't the ship's official company name. Also one conspiracy theory suspected that the ship was supposed to be carrying some highly confidential bio weapon thats linked to Japan bio weapon project which could be the culprit behind the mysterious death of Orang Medan's crews. FBI is also believed to be taking interest on the case of Orang Medan with some documents supporting this claim, if those documents are to be believed. note: oh yeah forgot to mention, the time setting is around world war 2 era if i remember correctly thus the soldier in the intro dressed as ww2 soldier

The Curator is my favorite character in this anthology. His presence opens up so many doors, and raises a few questions. Like, how many times has he done this? He seems nonchalant about this. Is he the first Curator, and if not, how many were before him? Why does he allow you to basically play God?

The "SS Ourang Medan" is a ship that wrecked at sea in which the crew died of mysterious circumstances in the June of 1947. Apparently before they sank, they sent out a SOS saying "All officers including the captain, dead in chartroom and on the bridge. Probably whole of crew dead. I die." Since then it's become a bit of a legendary Ghost Ship

I love this game. Partly for how creepy it is (especially in multiplayer), partly for the amazing replay value (done 3 playthroughs with a friend and each time we find totally new scenes and areas that weren't there before), and partly because it's based on an actual ghost story/theory about the actual ship.

Honestly, this is a great legend that could totally be made into an amazing Scooby-Doo movie.
