The next Xbox console is sounding more and more like it'll function a lot like a PC according to a Phil Spencer interview with Polygon that took place the last few days. He discussed exclusives, the possibility of letting Epic Games launch their app on the Xbox console and the idea of tearing down the walls of exclusivity.

Previously: Polygon had an interview with Phil Spencer during GDC where he talked about Xbox Exclusives and how a lack of growth in the industry makes them less viable. As this is the 2nd time Phil Spencer has discussed this with Polygon it is seeming more likely that Xbox news could begin breaking about more exclusives from Xbox heading to other platforms.

I think Xbox would be in a position where if an "XboxOS" allows steam and windows games natively, then that means that Playstation games would be available to the Xbox console due to the technicality of Playstation games being on Steam. I don't think it would backfire. Because as a large publisher, they can continue bringing in Software revenue that is hardware independent. Similar to how Windows brings in revenue independent from their Surface line.

Well if Sony and Nintendo are not going to allow other digital stores on their consoles? Xbox really should grab this opportunity to have something unique on their platform. It could end up being a big selling point why you should get an Xbox over a Switch 2 or PS5 Pro/PS6.

Give me Steam access on a plug n play Xbox/PC hybrid, and it'd be a case of 'shut up and take my money'. I mean, Xbox is already basically a walled off simplified PC, just open it up a little.... There is definitely an opportunity there, room for the right brand to grow into. That might be the future of Xbox, and if it is I'm all for it. Imagine if you could boot into the Xbox OS, and from there boot into Steam OS like on Steam Deck. The possibilities are endless. This, I feel, is the future. And indeed, 'every screen is an Xbox', so to speak.

For me personally, at that point, I'm just going to buy a pc. I've been all xbox since the og, stayed for my friend list and library. Now, they're all accessible on a platform that has access to almost everything in the gaming landscape barring Nintendo, and with sony possibly going day and date with their games to pc also, I've just come to the realisation that pc is the logical option going forward. I don't like it, but that's how the future is panning out.

@@kizzgizz Yes. I've been playing on PC since '95 along with consoles (every Xbox & skipped the last two PSs). The PC is the escape hatch from consoles. Consoles are going to go down at some point in their generation, and you'll need to evac. I don't need a console to run my Steam games (poorly), I just walk in the other room...and it didn't take 25+ years, either.

This is why I’ve always supported Xbox. They are headed in the direction that I see the entire gaming industry going if it wants to survive. All Xbox has to do is open the platform and make upgradable hardware. They have all the key components to get this done. All these supposed Xbox fans complaining about Helldivers not coming to Xbox would get games like that if Steam was on an Xbox hybrid platform. They would need a version of Windows to operate it and I’d love to have access to more mods for games that PC normally gets exclusively. This to me has always been what Xbox’s identity should be. A PC in the living room.

They absolutely will block it. Sony has games on GeForce now, but if you load it up on Xbox the Sony games are removed from your library. They only appear on systems that aren't Xbox. I imagine they will force valve to do the same thing, detect hardware and switch the library accordingly.

@Thebebop2008 even if the PS content was unaccessable , having steam would be a MASSIVE W for Microsoft, gamers and industry as a whole. Microsoft could simply buy Steam outright but its not even necessary. Having Steam accessible via Xbox brand would be huge win for the consumer in every way and I'm a fan of both Microsoft & Sony.

i am a huge xbox fan i have owned every one of thier consoles & as long as they keep making hardware i will buy from xbox i think its really important to keep one of the big 3 console makers here in America! I think its a great idea to open the xbox up to more stores , i think just having that many extra ppl to sell your games too will definitely make up for not selling it on your store front after buying activision blizzard they are one of the biggest game devopers plus zenimax, ID,343, and so so many other top devopers so many Ips, selling them on all platforms would bring in so much more money ! I just dont want them to stop making consoles its so much cheaper then buying a gaming pc even a decent pc is 1000 vs 500 for a series x ! it may have no were near the power of a top spec system today but the games are opimized so well alot of times i would prefer a console just for the plug and playness of it all!

Don't be so short-sighted Destin. The media is stuck in the past. How could more options backfire? I play on Xbox & have no intention of buying a PC. But if Steam was on Xbox, I'd buy games there. This would be a game changer. I imagine console sales would increase significantly. Essentially, Xbox would be a more affordable PC, with the benefits of being a console.

This makes no sense on a few levels. Let’s start with an easy one. How does Xbox plan to support Half-Life Alyx on this omnibox? Or any game that requires a VR headset? Are they going to tell Valve to filter their catalog to exclude VR? How about my existing Xbox library that only works on an Xbox console of some kind? If they make a PC style system, how are they going to bring that library over? Video games are not as simple as streaming video. We are nowhere close to Xbox acting like a Roku. No one seems to understand this simple principle. It’s the entire reason that gaming is fractured right now. Solve hardware, OS, and software fracturing and then we can talk about this one box/stick/app to rule them all.

@@dradis1 first of all why are you bringing up VR games? If this happens it's possible that all this will be is more options to play games on the xbox. People are failing to realize everybody doesn't want to game on pc. The (possible) ability to play pc games especially the one's that's not on Xbox and Playstation would be awesome. They easily make a solution to install the games on Xbox and the majority of steam games has controller support.

@@sktzoner Better deals, different features, Steam Networking is free unlike Xbox Live Gold. Having more options is a fucking GREAT thing. Steam Sales are legendary. There's no downsides to you, the consumer, with more choices.

@@driley1988 VR is an easy way to highlight the hardware disparity between platforms. Steam / PC supports VR. Steam / PC also has games that only support keyboard and mouse. PlayStation supports a touchpad, adaptive triggers, and more precise haptic feedback on their controller. That isn't even getting into differences in internal hardware and how the various operating systems interact with that hardware. If you primarily game on PC, these might all seem like non-issues. But that is because there is a lot of control available to users. You can tweak things, adapt things, apply hacks and workarounds. Same goes for something like a Steam Deck. Do you think an Xbox branded product is going to do that? I don't. These kinds of things are non-issues for something like a Roku where it's a collection of apps that stream in video. Video is nearly ubiquitous at this point. There is little chance that a movie or TV show will have some kind of playback issue or have a problem with the remote control. Video games are a different story. Even if we are talking about streaming. But streaming video games is not going to be mainstream for a long time. So, either Destin is talking about some future Xbox that plays games locally from a collection of storefronts (all the hardware/software problems I have been rambling about), or he is talking about a streaming box which is at least 10 years away if not longer. Either one is not a near term thing. Both have a host of problems that Microsoft probably cannot or will not solve. That is evidenced by their inability to even properly leverage the PC platform into a good Xbox experience. They own the operating system on most gaming PCs and they have made almost no impact on PC gaming sales relative to Valve. I would guess that Epic is having a bigger impact on Windows PC than Xbox is having on Windows PC. I very much want Xbox to do something innovative. I don't think this is going to be it.

I'm not sold on this plan. I was a big defender that the Series S wasn't holding back the Xbox generation but the quality of the last two first party releases (Starfield and Forza) raise serious concerns. It appears there aren't enough dedicated teams to optimize software for two different hardware platforms. I think we could've gotten better benchmarks if there was one centralized platform to work on. Also, some games should skip the Series S all together because the means don't justify the ends. I think adding more hardware platforms will continue to water down the quality of output if each release is going to be sloppy with optimization.

While it would be *extremely cool* to get Steam and Epic storefronts on Xbox, let us not lose sight of the fact that Apple is being sued for walling off their ecosystem and creating a monopoly within Apple devices. Microsoft is technically doing the same thing with Xbox. So... If Microsoft pulled this off, it would prevent them from being open to another FTC attack later on down the line. It's a smart move. And a very forward-looking/forward-thinking one at that.

It’s always important to keep in mind context: Phil Spencer and Xbox are only making these moves out of pure desperation, and as last ditch attempts to reclaim sections of the market that they’re rapidly losing. This isn’t a power play, or a genius guaranteed slam dunk move. It’s a risk. And it erodes the identity of Xbox further. Xbox are the only ones talking about getting rid of exclusives, and opening up ecosystems to a drastic extent. Why? Because they’re in last place, and need to try to flip and redefine the market. All totally their right and the logical move, but the context *is* still important to bear in mind when discussing these things

No wonder there's an emphasis on ventilation with the Series X, with the fan and air vents. The side vent with the fan was really warm after my first session. Tekken 8 had TWO discs that needed updates downloaded to it, it took about about two hours. After 20% of the download, I could actually play an "airplane mode" version of the game, just a versus match, while I waited for the entire load 🙂. That might have a lot to do with the heat. Definately a system you want to leave space for on the entertainment center, for ventilation. It's also a dense and heavy system, for the small box that it is 🙂. MS has some secret weapon in there, for PS5 down the road 😂. Be careful with curious children accidently pulling it off the shelf...

To me what would be more interesting is if Nvidia brought GeForce now to the Xbox and with their premium tier get 4k/DLSS 3.5/Ray tracing and path tracing at 60+ fps. They promised the most technologically advanced console next gen, but that doesn’t mean raw horse power. It could be an Ai/machine learning chip that can use a small powered device from your home and a flagship powered PC on a server and get high end performance.

Well already had this functionality in the PC. It existed before PS or Xbox, yet these consoles have existed for generations. Consoles fulfill a role. No one wants a PC that is immediately behind the times and closed off.

@@ronniepatterson2827 Must not play a variety of games then. A Shard is similar to the term instance. Whereas instance applies to an area with a small group usually a party entering a zone. A shard is an entire world map with hundreds or thousands of players. Shard in essence is an instance of an open world. Populous MMOs need multiple shards to accommodate different players. Shards is different from "servers" in MMOs as players are generally free to change Shards at will to better group with friends for open-world content.

Yeah no what Microsoft is doing is illegal if the rumors are true, Microsoft do not have the right to forcefully put first party PlayStation titles on Xbox by adding Steam to their consoles. Sony have the right to sue them and block their titles.

I'd wager the main enticement for MS is to do what Sony did and maybe help subsidize development costs for game companies to get them to come to xbox/gamepass. Establish that relationship in good faith, but it's gonna cost them in the short term. The issue with making it so you can play any game on any console is the customer's question of "If I can play it anywhere, then why play it here?" Assuming all game companies are okay with this approach, it just homogenizes everything and starts to grab the attention of the FTC for monopolistic concerns.

The big problem with this one box thing you talk of is that would mean there would be less competition, what's sony going to do give up their hardware and just go software only, Nintendo too. I highly doubt sony will just give up the playtstation hardware or Nintendo will just give up making consoles just for every peice of software to be on one box? People always say they don't like exclusives but at the end of the day these are all individual companies and having stuff exclusives to that peice of hardware is the reason you buy them in the first place.

My gut feeling is that itll be the end of the traditional console and become more like modern day smartphones. We make our choices to buy phones on the exclusive features and strengths of each company's hardware, not necessarily the software.

If I could run Windows on an Xbox Series X then I'd buy one. It'd be a low cost mid-range gaming PC and that'd be awesome! Alternatively if I could put Steam/Epic on an Xbox Series X (or their next console) then I'd buy one. Until then I'll keep building high-end PCs and playing all the Xbox 'exclusives' on that instead.

My opinion is Spencer wouldn’t be talking about it at all if he hadn’t already started to frame the groundwork with Steam, Epic etc. If PS wants their games on those platforms, does that mean they now would be playable on the Xbox platform? I guess Sony could create their own launcher, but that wouldn’t make as much sense…

Wow...Series X definitely a leap over my Xbox One with the graphics, I can see it already. Put Tekken 8 in, and theres a giant 4K head of Kazuya, the main guy, staring at me 😂. Everything looks sharp, clean, vibrant. No wonder they say its the most powerful console on the planet.

Damn I just realised how adding Steam to Xbox gives Xbox PS exclusives, albeit a bit late. This capitalises on the fact that Sony is forced to release their games on PC for their own reasons, which means Xbox becomes the ideal console if it let's normies buy a console that plays PC games and PS games. Interesting times ahead if it really happens.

Phil Spencer will have no choice but to open the Xbox eco system when they go all digital. As they'll be under scrutiny of the EU's Digital Media Act. If Xbox gets named as a Gatekeeper like Microsoft has for Windows. They'll be forced to open up. So this is just Phil Spencer playing the good guy. This is him spinning it out there before there hand gets forced.

Even if they want to add their games doesn’t mean needs to be Xbox not everyone is a Xbox fan the store can chose to add games if they want but I don’t see Nintendo and PlayStation letting their games on Xbox they don’t want game pass payment Xbox fan have to paid full price and exclusive is better even for Xbox

I think you are missing key points from Phil's interview because i believe you need to apply his thoughts on Handhelds, exclusivity and inclusion of multiple stores all together. 1st, he made it clear that he wants whatever they make to feel like an Xbox. That tells me that he wants all Xbox devices to feel like a console. The handheld and the next-box. You mentioned that "if you are computer savvy, you could manipulate the box to do whatever you want. Like the steam deck." Thats not what i got from the article. What i read is that he wants eveything to "just work" like it currently does on Xbox. So your take is implying things he didn't say. As for exclusives, I feel that if Phil is talking about this "future" where steam and epic stores are on the next-box, that tells me that there is something cooking in the kitchen regarding this. Since Sony release games in both stores, exclusives will no longer be exclusive. He is speaking on the industry as a whole if he get his wish with those stores on Xbox. Finally, the next-box will definitely be a mini gaming PC. I think its safe to assume that it will be more expensive too. If the handheld operating on a light Windows OS that will allow a console experience, why would the next box not use the same tech? Answer: It will!! Phil know console games want to plug and play. I think they want the blur the line between handheld console and PC further. By doing that, it will mean less exclusives. I think all this fear mongering needs to stop.

I'm realizing that, Phil meant on storefront is basically like EA/UBISOFT/other launcher. Unlikely they get on steam on board, not because valve don't want, but Microsoft need some calculations how impact their business if steam get on xbox.

Dragons Dogma is a perfect example of why. A lot of people with bad ass rigs couldn't even play without crashing. Console? No problem.

Xbox wants more options for players because it ruined the prospects it had with its own options. Customers don’t want to use a Microsoft/Xbox storefront. Better to get a cut of profit from other storefronts than it is to get nothing from your own.

I just want a Xbox handheld…. Please Microsoft make one and I will gladly give you my money for it but Sony and Nintendo will not do this. It’s like believing in Santa then catch your folks laying out gifts. Lastly make the consoles all ready out last longer than six years and stop putting out “enhanced” versions of consoles like the PS 5 pro that is supposedly supposed to be like $600-$650. That’s crazy.

2 seperate hard drives, 1 for xbox only and 1 for windows so you have the choice to optimise the system and open up xbox fully to pc experience, ys graphics limitations will be there but the grounds of it is there and can ve worked on... make it happen you'll sell more without a doubt #xcomp box copywrite 😂

Gods it looks like Phil might have the balls to do this. I hope so, it's insanely pro-consumer. The stores themselves competing to offer titles on whatever hardware platform you desire is the way it should be. Likewise the hardware itself should be innovating and provide various features to entice others, besides Exclusives cause honestly? They don't matter to consumers. I didn't buy a PS5 for the Square Enix exclusive. I just waited. The economy today and more so, having so much choice to play makes exclusives pointless to consumers.

Take it out the box...WOW 😂...Series X is a little box actually, but it has some WEIGHT to it 😂. Dense box 😂. Tiny power cord, had to move the surge protector over 🙂...Tekken 8 is not showing up on the dash...I've got the system upside down, D'OH 😂!
