I want to see Xbox bring back digital ownership rights like they put forward for Xbox one. Ability to sell digital games or trade them, use with multiple accounts and reaffirm digital content is owned! They were years ahead of the game, but years too early. Now is the time to bring these policies back

The fact that I can't download Halo:CE as an Xbox Original upsets me. They could make a "LAN Party" edition of the original version of Halo: CE and I think it would sell.

This renewed interest in back compatibility may be a confirmation of next xbox not being x86, but ARM based. So they basically will need to ensure compatibility from everything from xbox one and series consoles forward.

I'm very excited for the future of XBox.. It could be this play might end Playstation with all the things happening. XBox could be the eco-system and console where you can play everything, except for Playstation and Nintendo. So it will have the biggest library and will be the easiest to develop for and also the cheapest to develop for.

PC will always be the king of preservation, i don't trust Microsoft with the Xbox.

I have a feeling that the next Xbox may have a unique hardware architecture, and in that case, setting out now to insure backwards compatibility would be a no-brainer. Officially announcing it ( game preservation ) so early quells the fears of many gamers concerned about the issue. It’s good marketing/PR; a smart move.

This means that they are gonna add more games to the backwards compatibility list and keep adding them going forwards.

While I applaud Xbox thinking ahead, their current Xbox backwards compatibility talk is spotty at times. I recently came in possession of physical copies of Marvel vs Capcom 2 and Arx Fatalis. Arx Fatalis is only available on PC Game Pass and MvsC2 will not run on Xbox S/X. Why because Capcom delisted the digital version from the Xbox store. Arkane is an Xbox dev studio, don't understand the discrpensy with Arx Fatalis. I sold them off (albiet for great value). Microsoft can put in all the perservation features it wants, but it comes down to license holders & publishers to see what will go forward digitally and physically.

This is all really good to hear. I hope it materializes into improved frame rate/FPS boost on future hardware at least if not series X. For the love of all that is good in the world please boost Fable 2 I would actually pay a full $40 for a remaster of that thing. Meanwhile on the Nintendo side they can’t even be bothered to bring Wind Waker HD forward to Switch. And as much as I love my PS exclusives , I have literally no reason to collect physical PS3 games because well look at the state of their back compat…

The first two Splinter Cell games (and Double Agent Ver. 2) are no longer available on the Xbox digital store. I haven't seen enough people shine a spotlight on this. Splinter Cell was in all the marketing for the Xbox One BC program and now you can't even purchase from Xbox. This is an unfortunate development for any digital only consoles going forward.

They had better add more backwards compatible titles before the store closes.

The next call of duty coming to game pass on day one seems like such an easy win. I’d be hard pressed to think that not doing so would be beneficial for the player base.

I am with xbox since November 2001 if they wish to preserve they should bring achievements to OG xbox games, bring some like brute force this was a awesome exclusive , remake some too . With the 360 store closing we will lost a lot of games not available elsewhere and we have lost already so much they should bring back those games at least all the arcade games they have a lot of gems in those !!!!! I wish they bring over the profile shop section too i need all my stuff and my themes for the 360 👀😅

Preservation is important

I saw this video being recorded live, and I thought it felt weird. It feels quite a bit better now that as a stand alone video. But don't let my opinion, whether you see it as negative or not, to stop you from recording more videos like this live, because, it was interesting to watch.

They should stop betting on DEI, otherwise they'll keep on regressing in sales.

What I don’t get is if they can move everything working NOW to the next system why couldn’t they move every original Xbox game that works on the 360 to the Xbox one without licensing issues?

I'm still waiting for Microsoft to explain. There master plan to keep & improve 3rd party support coming to there next gen Xbox. If they continue down the multiplatform plan. I'm not sure about the hybrid PC idea. Be nice to have a handheld. But It will be better to go full PC to get both Xbox & PlayStation.

If Xbox doesn’t have exclusive games I’m jumping ship to PlayStation. There will be no need for an Xbox anymore. I think they will regret that decision.

This is a good initiative. I wouldn’t trust Sarah Bond with it (or anything else gaming related), but it’s a worthy endeavor.

We don’t exactly what they are doing or meaning regarding game preservation. They just ditched the physical game division and are about to launch a disc less console. So, we don’t know. Everything else is speculation and simping.

Backwards compatibility was not based on popularity, or historical importance, or quality, or any such preservation criteria. If xbox could sell it, then it was made backwards compatible. Once you have backwards compatibility tech you could use it on any game. But it was only used on games they could sell. They stated that this was because of licensing. They had to get new licenses to make xbox one execulatables. If there is a hardware shift and they need to create new executables again. Then will we have the same licensing issues? Will "Forward Preservation" again be strictly limited to just the games that xbox can still sell? Maybe only part of your digital library will play on the new generation....

"Forward Compatibility" is just another word for "Sell the same digital games forever". With the xbox one Microsoft only preserved the games they could sell. Less than half of the xbox 360 games were made backwards compatible and very few xbox OG games. It's more about making money than preservation. They could have used their tech on all games and just sold some of those games digitally. But they didn't, there is no money in presving games you can't sell. But I still really appreciate them deciding to invest in the technology & they got some great results. But now If they did not take people's digital libraries forward to the next console then it would be brand suicide at this point. So I don't see that they have a choice if they want to remain in the console buisiness. Imagine having a new digital store for the new generation and it has just 10 games in it. It would just be suicide. Selling old games is big business which has been proven by Steam. Gamers are notorious for buying too many old games in the steam sales and having backlogs that are too big for one lifetime. We are now at a stage where AI can upscale without developer work and soon AI will be able to translate in real time so even old games that never left Japan can be player around the world. So old games are just getting more and more valuable. And with the move to digital only consoles... "Game Preservation" means re-buying all your favourite physical games digitally. Putting old games on sale is the perfect way of getting more money out of your existing customer base.

I personally feel like they need to put more effort into getting even more back compat games because games like the dishwasher vampire smile or fuze will be forever lost. I can’t even download those games anymore from my download history so for them to preach about preservation is ridiculous when is only preserved until either they shut down the servers or the company somehow goes bankrupt.

This report does not make any sense especially because the next rumored series x is digital only so there is no way to play your xbox 360 discs.

Not super excited about Phil's take on exclusivity. It's not hard 1. Plot a game idea. 2. develop it. 3. quality control. 4. publish. 5. meet the wants of your audience. I don't know why they can't this point through their heads. Yes, game pass brought some good to the industry but they need to start serving what their audience has been asking for over 15 years.

My main concern is Xbox going woke like Disney. They don't have a ton of great exclusive titles coming out fine, third party titles are good enough but if they start forcing messages and taking away gamer freedom I will change platforms. I'm definitely not excited, but I am curious to see the next hardware which is looking like a PC hybrid. If they go that route an I can play Steam games on the next Xbox, and the power and price are right, they will have kept me as a customer. I've been here since Nov 2001 and the mortgaging of exclusives, throwing in the towel, it's hard to be excited right now.

Game preservation is good but retro compatibility beyond one generation is overrated, I mean imagine buying a series x to play Xbox 360 games 🤡. Games are as much a technology showcase as an artistic endeavor so a good game has to have both of these aspects to be good and not one without the other. In conclusion: Yes graphics and the art choices matter Yes technical elements and fluidity matters Yes ai intelligence matters Yes an interactive world matters Yes a good story with character depth matters No vampire survivor is not a benchmark for gaming. Instead, Its games like gta6, Baldur's gate 3 and the last of us 2 that are!
