Directed by Henry Sellick, who also made the excellent Coraline, and James and The Giant Peach. Burton was kept too busy directing Batman Returns to work on this movie, although the story and many of the characters were created by Burton.

This movie was NOT directed by Tim Burton, but by Henry Selick. Poor dude never gets the credit he deserves just because marketing put Burton's name everywhere.

Patchwork Sally is so endearing. She tries her best to thwart Jack and his disastrous Christmas take-over idea. And she does use her limbs quite efficienty to make things go her way. But Jack Skeleton is determined like no other. I guess that's why he's the Pumpkin King.

I love how this movie honors Halloween spookiness and Christmas cheer so well!

I LOVE the adaption of "What's this?" I just about died laughing!

I was born in 1988, saw this in theaters in 1993, and got the VHS tape for my birthday in 1994. It's been my all-time favourite movie ever since. I have the entire thing memorized line for line and even the way the characters express themselves. I'm always glad when someone sees this movie for the first time 😊 My record for most times watched back-to-back is 7 when I was around 7 or 8 years old and the only reason it wasn't more was because my mom told me I had to go to bed for school in the morning, lol.

Fun Fact: The Evil Scientist was voiced by the actor who played Uncle Lewis in Christmas Vacation!

What's great about this movie is that it can be seen on Halloween and/or Christmas. I absolutely love the films of Tim Burton whether he produced or directed them. His films are so unique. Being this is your first time watching this film, watch it again in the future. The visuals are extremely amazing when you pay close attention to the details. An example is when Jack is scientifically calculating the meaning of Christmas, just above the end of the equation is the date that the movie was released. There are other little tidbits throughout the movie if you look in the details. I look forward to your next reaction. 🎥

This song does not contain “f*ck” or “sh*t.” 13:21 - Again, turkey not chicken. And that IS the (radically overcooked) Thanksgiving turkey they’re wheeling out behind the Easter Bunny. 23:07 - C. S. Lewis said that although not every good story for adults is suitable for children, any good story for children is suitable for adults.

Burton came up with the idea, the story, the creatures, and the new camera technology to make the movie even possible. Burton was working on Batman Returns and he didn't have the time to dedicate to the laborious stop motion process. So he gave director duties to Harry Selick. He gave the creation of the score to Danny Elfman. (what a Master Stroke) Burton did supervise all the scenes, storyboards, and the overall direction he just didn't do the day-to-day work. He couldn't.

This movie is as made using stop motion. So they would move the figures slightly, take a photo, over and over. So it took a long time to do

Since you just watched it as well, you might recognize the voice of the mad scientist in this as the cigar smoking great uncle in Christmas Vacation.

Ooggie Boggie is so much fun and such a prankster. He would make such a great Halloween party host. Picture the Conjuring meets the Exorsist. Damnation on another level.

The stop motion puppetry is brilliant. Loved this film as a kid, saw it in theaters.

Stop motion animation is a technique where you set up a static scene and take a picture, then move the subject very slightly and take another picture. Do that enough times and then play it back at an accelerated speed and it creates realistic movement. It's an extremely laborious process. There are several popular Christmas specials from the 60s & 70s that were made with stop motion animation (also called "claymation") which were favorites of Burton's growing up. The initial idea for the movie was to harken back to those old specials that he loved, with the twist of adding the gothic spookiness that he also loved. There are very few studios that still make these kinds of movies. One of the most famous is Laika, which has its workshop near where I live. Their process has gotten so good and smooth that you almost can't tell the difference between it and computer-generated images. Almost a shame in a way because of how much work it takes, it almost looks too good.

I was back at work today and feeling a bit ‘over’ Christmas - but watching how much you enjoyed this made me feel all Christmassy again :)

Hi Mary, Harry Selick directed this movie. He has a great deal of experience with stop motion animation. Tim Burton was hugely smart to have Harry Selick direct this movie. Film is normally projected at 24 frames per second. Therefore, you need 24 pictures for 1 second of movie. It's a very labor intensive process. I'm sure there's a lot more to this kind of animation, but this is a general overview of the procedure.

Mary Christmas! I love this movie, been watching it every year since I was a kid, mostly during October. For me it's a Halloween movie, for others it's a Christmas movie. Take your pick 😁

On another Reaction to this movie I asked if a bad dream is a nightmare is a good dream a nightstallion and lots of people commented back that they though it was a fantastic idea. But then I found out that the mare in nightmare doesn't refer to a female horse. It's from the Latin for sea, mare. I still think we can call good dreams nightstallions though.

Growing up, I quickly realized that my parents were in the pocket of Big Santa. They reported everything I did that was naughty, and so I had to keep on THEIR good sides, to get them to give favorable reports. This made it necessary to prioritize making all my misdeeds outside of their sphere of notice, and cultivating my personal charm, to keep them won over, at those times when my villainy was exposed..

Jack's Skelington's singing voice was provided by longtime Tim Butron collaborator composer Danny Elfman.

Stop motion is such an old technique, but still works wonders! "Coraline" and "ParaNorman" (Laika FTW!!!) should definitely be on your list!

Claymation takes forever and a day to make. But when done right, they are fantastic. This is a good one for Halloween or Christmas IMO. And you wouldn't want to live in Halloween town? Awww. I would. 😊

This movie is so much fun. Some creepiness with the scientist (which I don't like...being a scientist myself) but otherwise fun as can be.

Concerning Jack and Oogie Boogie not getting along, I’ve always wondered about that backstory. Few hints are given. Jack tells the trick-or-treaters “to leave Oogie Boogie out of” his Santa caper, suggesting a possible shaky turf agreement between them similar to the witches in the Wizard of Oz, i.e., Oogie Boogie runs the underworld, and Jack rules Halloweentown. They might have clashed in the past, and possibly came to some peace agreement, though Jack took him down pretty quickly, suggesting Oogie was running the Underworld at with Jack’s permission, not because they were equals.

Danny Elfman has an incredible body of work, but I think most would agree this is his masterpiece.

While the entire film is amazing, the best part (for me at least) would be Oogie Boogie! His Cab Calloway/casino inspired number, his personality, he's a fantastic addition to Disney's villain library. Also, Oogie was the hardest to animate since his puppet was super heavy and difficult to move.

i mean at the beginning of the year we get more busy but this time of year i work more, because we get more customers. i work in a restaurant, everybody wants god damn crab in december, they want me to mix them drinks, to clean up after them, and no tip. I couldn't buy my dad a present this year, the last of my money went to my mom and brothers gift. I get it, a tip is not mandatory, but I do a good job, especially around the holidays. It's just rude to ask me for extras, I take them OFF YOUR BILL and you leave me 28 cents.

A suggestion if you haven't watched it yet is doctor who it's a long series where it's full of adventures and alot of fun it was started back in the 60s and it's still going now and it's so amazing fantastic and I think you could start to react and see if you like it
