We have many fish and an orange spotted salamander. We took an old deep freezer and turned it into a worm bed, We put 35 earth worms from our woods and fed them for a year before using them. That was 3 years ago and have never had to put more in it. It was one of the best things we ever did for our fish and salamander!
good video good info I use earthworms as well I collect them then leave them in tubs with moist mud so I can just get them from the tubs and I don't have to dig up worms every time
Another way to catch earth worms is to mark a square on an area of grass, then shower that area with soapy water ie fairy liquid. This will make the worms come to the surface for capture. Pop them in some fresh water to clean then them and voilà. Don't forget to put plenty of fresh water on the grass that you soaked to completely dilute and rinse any soap. I was taught this in biology class at school man many moons ago.
Hi Paul. With juveniles I usually feed them most days as long as they are continuing to accept food this often. I usually feed adults 2-3 times a week on average but their appetite varies with temperature and activity levels. Lee.
Do you keep worms yourself? If so, do you feed them specific foods so they can be as nutritious as possible to your newts? I started with dendrobaena as can't find lumbricus for sale. Been feeding them veggies and egg shells so far.
Lumbricus are quite difficult to culture but I believe they are the best type of worm that you can feed to newts, so I collect them rather than culture them. Lee.
