You're a goldmine of knowledge and wisdom, thanks for this insight! I'm at a point where I'm starting to understand how the mind works in terms of transitioning from a different "med student" framework, to someone who can understand the medical language and know the next step. But the transition is very mentally taxing. Thanks again for this pearl

I was receiving cataract surgery on my left eye and while it was being done, I woke up watching the doctor as he was putting the artificial lens in, they didn't know that I was awake because my left eye was still numbed out, it was an interesting experience for me to watch that, what I saw was the doctor folding the lens like a funnel and placing it into my eye, after the procedure and when I was awake completely, I let them know that I saw the whole operation. If my eye hadn't been numb they would have known that I was awake and aware of it all.

Sounds good to me. A little off from that, but how would you say we work on this in rotations/3rd and 4th year? Watch the physician make decisions?

Trying to decide what you would do as a treatment plan even if you are not the one enacting it as a medical student. It will be good practice

What books do you recommend for a med student to read to get ideas on how to manage patients on the general medicine wards/clinic?

Doctor if you have time can you please explain how to better yourself for decision making? Why im asking because I shadow and volunteer with ophthalmologists (love the field) and for some cases I try to figure out when is a good time to use a steroid or not since they are contradicted for many diagnoses due to the rise in iop after long term use

Hi, I am also an ophthalmology resident, my answer is reading… we are in the era of information, and also to know your skill limits

Decision making cones with time and experience- the more patients you can see the better you’ll be. Combine this with reading the literature and you’ll improve your clinical reasoning
