That poor RTU was so choked-up it couldn't breathe! Good catch on the HP limit switch. It's rare that an on/off switch like that develops resistance, but when it does, it won't last much longer... And you saved yourself a return call, in addition to keeping the client from saying, "Chris just fixed the damn thing, why did it fail again so soon?" Good call on locking out that heat exchanger, it's an inferno waiting to happen the first time it fires up.

Those sealed pressure switches are not designed to be "cycled". That dirty condenser led to many trips along with the time the condenser fan died. That all exceded switches duty life. Great video!

I use the same technique for replacing pressure switches. No one wants to pay for sweating a factory pressure switch back in, and I don't blame them. So far, I've never had one leak afterward. But I bet a lot of us do it.

Pm is so important! If the customer had regular pm done they would save a ton of money in repairs and extend the life of their units saving even more money! When you work on stuff like that everything must be addressed to get it back in working order!

I just had a fan cycle (170open 225close) go bad. Well the a hole that originally put it on never put a schrader in. So when I took it off I got a nice freon burn.. well it has a schrader now AND I made a note inside the unit. Folks.. make notes when doing a repair in a unit to give a heads up.

After about a dozen years in HVAC/R I changed fields and went installing disptatch telco/ radio gear and tower/ mountaintop work. After about a 70 hour week I was in my bank--nice--cool, air conditioned after a VERY hot week for me--outdoors. The little sweetie teller, all dressed up, was "tired" after a "long day." I didn't say anything but "cry me a river" came to mind.

That's a good one. I did tower work and I know how it is to go up in the dark and not come down till the side lights come on. But I also know how it is to deal with the public all day and sometimes I think I would rather work outside lol.

You think there is no mental stress up on some forlorn mountaintop, if you get injured there is no fucking way help will get there "in time?" So update on my window unit situation, after turning a resister on the control board into a black pool of goop, got pissed off, ordered a new unit, its only available online an was supposed to take 2 weeks to arrive, then went up to homedepot and got a portable unit, the plug on the portable unit melted, not sure whats going on there, the new window unit came in today while im at work, homedepot shipped it via FedEx, FedEx left it on my porch upside-down, so now ive gotta inspect it when i get home from work and make sure its actually working before i can put it in, im so mad

11:06 I would have guessed the clogged condenser cause the high-pressure to trip many times and when it self reset so many times, it just finally started getting some bad contacts inside of it because it is a switch with contacts

The big picture diagnosis for this one needs to include why the heck there is so much grease. Is a range hood vent fan or exhaust fan not working properly? Does one need to be installed? As stated, ducting needs to be checked.. WTH is the kitchen doing to put so much grease out? PM's not often enough? etc. Good video and once again, thanks for posting..

I would take that blower assembly to an engine or cylinder head rebuilder. They usually have hot tanks and parts washers that'll make short work of that grease.

Those Knipex wrenches are something extra. As others have said and you explained in the recap, measure voltage drop of things and you'll find the error in a chain like the LP, HP, et c. If you have a good voltage at the transformer, under load, the problem is downstream.

Great example of why businesses need PM Agreements to keep things running smoothly. They got off fairly easy with just a blower assembly, pressure switch, and a cleaning. Definitely some duct work issues there with improper exhaust air not funnelling the air away from the conditioning space. If I had to guess they added equipment into the kitchen without tending to ventilating it properly.

It's pretty wild to think that the blower wheel would actually rebalance itself. I'd love to know more about the mechanism by which it happens, especially if it's more than just the grease and dirt slinging around.

I'm not an expert in grease-dirt wheel balancing, but I'd think that the wheel gradually "adjusts" itself through vibration and shaking on it's own. One side gets out of balance, and then the next days/weeks of dirt can only stick to the side that isn't shaking as much until it eventually evens out. Then the process repeats. Of course there's some "survival of the fittest" going on, in that if the wheel can't overcome/shake off enough to balance itself...then it just fails and we don't get to the point where this "phenomena" happens.

As previously stated, you can measure voltage across the switches just like you measure temp across the filter drier. I'm pretty sure you've done it before with contactors top to bottom

The failed high pressure switch may have caused the unit to ice up. If It was causing the contactor to pull in and out while it was failing, the blower can overheat and shut down causing the unit to ice

Interesting design decision to put the evaporator in a box on the roof 🤔 You normally don't see this here: You'll have large pipes next to the building sucking in air and after the air is cleaned it will be send to the cooling/heating elements of the heat pumps. Usually you have also a passive heat exchanger between the exhaust air and the intake air to recover some of the heat/cooling passively and afterwards the heatpump will scavange the rest.

Might think about closing your drive pulley on the blower? Move a little more air and adjust the split. If I saw correctly you had some room in your amp draw.

High pressure control was probably short cycling the unit for ages so now it is starting to fail as it is not a contactor and cannot take the constant opening and closing connections like a contactor can.

If you loose some voltage on contractors you don't have to disconnect everything: Just measure the voltage drop over each contactor. :)

Just a thought: if you would spray some silicone spray or wirelube on a new blower unit, will it help with keeping grease buildup off? Normally dirt and grease will not stick to silicone oil.

The main ac in my house is low on freon and no one has r22 to add some. but luckily I have a portable ac in my room.

It might be worth looking at replacing it, potentially. My home's old AC was an old R22 unit that had a serious leak (likely the condenser being used as a urinal by the dogs), and the cost to recharge it with R22 alone (not including a new condenser coil) was enough to consider replacement. Add in that it was undersized and couldn't actually effectively cool anyway on a warm day... new one works great!

You can have it swapped out with r438a. It works great. No oil change required. Many contractors don't want to do it because they make much more money selling you a new system. I do the whole swap out for around $300, depending on how much your system holds.

I quit stocking R-22. Most of my customers already have 410A so R-22 at 1,000.00 is not worth stocking to sell someone a pound or two. I'll still buy it if my commercial customers need it but they usually need several pounds when they have issues. I rarely see residential with R-22 anymore. I realize some areas may still use a lot of it and companies in those areas should have it.

Amateur question; why is the swivel T not purged of air by quickly depressing the Schroeder valve? It might not be much air in it, but at the same time it feels like you are chasing atoms when evacuating before initial fill. Might not be as vad as i make it up to be though :)

When you are the last person to put your hands on a customer's piece of equipment, you own it. If that wiring rubs out and causes a short it'll be on him to fix it, probably at no cost to the customer.

Hey Chris had a unrelated question. Have a customer that keeps forming ice sickle on suction line p-trap at evap insulation is one solid piece not cut at p trap. There getting flagged by heath department because when ice sickle melts it makes pockets of ice on floor. Health department says this opens the door for bacterial growth.do u have any suggestions on how to seal this up better. Basically when unit goes into defrost suction line thaws out and water ends up at bottom of p trap and eventually builds into a big ice ball.
