Here’s our Take on how the hidden power of Erin’s vulnerability actually draws people in-leading her into toxic romances with Andy and Gabe, but also giving her a home with work family members like Michael and Kelly. It’s a story that tells us something surprising about harnessing our own weaknesses into strengths.

I think Andy and Erin's relationship could have worked out and been wholesome but for some unknown reason they completely tanked Andy's character in the last season or two. I don't blame Erin for dumping the version of Andy that left her for a boat but I really dont think that was the Andy that I had come to know by then. I know most people prefer her relationship with Andy, but the two of them always felt off to me, and sometimes I thought Erin was happier on her own. She didn't have to feel like she lived up to expectations all the time. There was a plotline where she wanted to learn a new language to impress Andy's eccentric family, where she ended up with Dwight teaching her Dothraki. Which then Andy sort of berates her for, making her feel dumb and even more inferior than before. I love her friendship with Kelly more than any of her other relationships (although I adore Pete with all my heart). The girls even started a girl band! The message with Erin should've been with finding confidence in herself without the need to go through love triangle after love triangle.

I loved Andy and Erin. My fav episode of them is PDA when they go on Gabe’s scavenger hunt (treasure hunt idk). It’s not that their relationship was off but it’s the fact that they ruined Andy’s character in S9. He had the best comeback and most character development to me and he was such a great boss until they ruined him. Pete could have been good to me but I felt like there was no room for him. Especially when they developed Andy and Erin’s relationship for the entire show but then ruined it for no necessary reason. They just tried to copy and paste Pam and Jim’s story with Pete and Erin and I couldn’t rlly enjoy it. It’s heartbreaking to me lol.

I wouldn’t call Michael a narcissist at all. He has too much empathy and deep rooted insecurity to be an actually narcissistic person. He’s more so like Erin in that he too has low self esteem but he’s developed a facade of confidence to hide his vulnerability and I think that’s one of the best things about Michael and Erin is that they both build each other up throughout the series as Micheal is the father figure she never had and Erin is someone who just gets him and will always laugh at his jokes.

I love how you’ve explained Erin’s growth through her relationships, some people feel that Erin’s relationships are needlessly thrown in to help interest but I think they add a lot to her character and I love when she ends up with Pete

I love all of your videos, but this one specifically struck such a chord with me!!!! You two are geniuses! I know the patterns seem so easy to connect once you have them laid out, but your opinions are so well thought-out and poignant and I'm just feeling emotional cus I never ever thought I'd relate to Erin so much. I just love this video I've said it before and I'll say it again I wish you could analyse my life this way 😂❤️ it just all makes such perfect sense! And everything you say seems so wholesome. You present problematic patterns but in a way that makes them seem solvable. Your critique is just so clever and lovely.

The only reason Andy and Erin didn't work out was because Ed Helms worked on Hangover III instead of the Office so the writers turned Andy back into a jerk

Erin is the type of girl I fall in love with. Chipper, innocent, playful, really cute, vulnerable, approachable, and a smile that lights up her face. As I watched this video I realized maybe I also find her low self-esteem relatable. That feeling that the right partner can make you feel complete? Well when you feel that thing and then you can date another person who is amazing who also feels that thing (because a lot of people are too self-assured to ever feel like that), yes, potentially destructive but man the emotional spark that generates is just wild and rare.

I really wish I was more confident. There are very few things I like about myself, but I do think my humility and willingness to see the goodness in people is one of them. It has its draw backs and pitfalls, but it’s part of who I am.

Even as a dude that struggles with low self esteem, I can't relate with the women in the workplace angle, but I almost fee like it applies to me too. It feels really good to see an analysis of this. I've watched almost all of your discussions for Friends and The Office and I'm really gaining a new depth of appreciation for those shows beyond the 'comfort food' aspect they have in my life.

Eh sorry, I’m just not a fan of the ideal that is ingrained into this video. If you have low self esteem (hi I have it a lot) it shouldn’t be viewed as “oh this gives me strength because I hate myself” I’d rather view it as something that Pam illustrated with her character: “it would just make my heart soar if she saw this and said to herself “be strong, trust yourself, love yourself, conquer your fears” which I actually think the show was working towards with Erin. At the end of the show, she worked past the fear of leaving Andy and was in a healthy happy relationship with Pete which paralleled Pam’s progress after she left Roy. I don’t like focusing on her low self esteem because it doesn’t define her and we shouldn’t let it define us. Just my “take” though c: I also think that erin’s “secret power” was the actress that played her. I don’t think anyone else could’ve pulled her character off the way she did & that’s why we like Erin so much.

I don’t think they were saying that low self-esteem is what defined her. I think they highlighted how a trait we see as negative (low self-esteem) can lead to and grow into something more positive. We live in a world where on one hand, low self-esteem is overly glorified (esp. in women), and on the other hand there are people shouting from the rooftops that people with low self-esteem shouldn’t be that way. I think this video was a nice middle ground. It showed how others worked with Erin, and gently led her to be more self-actualized on her own, rather than try to snap her out of it, so to speak. The Take wasn’t praising low self-esteem, but rather, the more positive traits that are more often ASSOCIATED with low self-esteem. (Openness, kindness, etc.) Which, I believe can be a good thing that balances our perspective, because now confidence (as well as the negative traits that come with that quality) is being overly glorified sometimes.

I agree with your take (that some will see the video and think it promotes low self-esteem or depression as good and should define them). Its a balance. The video points out all the dangers and pitfalls of having low-self esteem, but for the specific character of Erin--who is surrounded by a quirky family of coworkers who both care for and take advantage of her--, this seemingly negative trait helped her grow as a person. It's easy to see the title and think "oh, so they think low-self esteem is good?" But as with everything, it's not so black and white: the grey area is that it both helps and hurts in certain ways, but the video focuses on the helpful part.

I love Erin and this is a really good analysis and breakdown of her character, but I’ve alway hated the implication that Erin and Pete are the new Jim and Pam, because it implies that Pam and Roy were actually incredibly perfect for each other but the day they started filming the documentary Roy started acting completely different for no reason and it wasn’t on Pam to overcome her own sense of self worth and realize she’s been settling for years so much as she just needs to see that this guy has changed and she just needs to move on to the next guy who will be half decent to her. Which idk to me that just devalues Jim and Pam’s entire arc because it was a lot more nuanced then the wash, rinse, repeat of the love triangle that was Erin, Pete, and Andy in season 9.

thank you so much for this video! i feel like society's focused too much on high self-esteem without teaching the right ways to get it. It's totally fine to have low self-esteem as long as you know how to work with it. In fact, obsessing over self-esteem is the way to lose it!
