The Old Testament Law for Christians (Interview w/ Dr. Richard Averbeck)

Is the Old Testament Law-the Torah-relevant to Christians today? Many Christians don’t believe that it is. In fact, some modern teachers argue that the Mosaic Law’s expiration date was the arrival of Christ. And now that Christ died on the cross, they say that the Law is no longer in effect.
But is that really what the New Testament teaches? My guest, Dr. Richard Averbeck, challenges that perspective. In his recent book, The Old Testament Law for the Life of the Church, Dr. Averbeck makes the case that the Law of Moses remains in effect for Christians today.
In this interview, Dr. Averbeck explains how the Torah is carried into the New Covenant, the problems with dividing the law into moral, civil, and ceremonial categories, and why the Levitical sacrificial system does not contradict the Messiah’s once-for-all sacrifice for sin.
I’m excited to have Dr. Averbeck with us to share his insights, and I hope this interview blesses you.

Again brother Wilber a great video. When I heard Dr. Averbeck mention the unity of the Law I jumped out of my seat, that is a great conclusion. I have not heard a Scholar or preacher ever say that. I am not a scholar but arrived at this same understanding years ago and have endured criticism for it from church folks and pastor for quite some time.

Thank you David and Richard. Great discussion. Loved your 'friend's house' analogy. Shalom to you both.

Thank you for that interview brother. The gentleman has really good explanations and insights. I would still argue that there is only one law; the law of Christ is the same as Torah. Also, in Acts 15, although the elders pointed out certain things for new believers, James still mentioned that the Law of Moses is taught in the congregation every Sabbath. Which means that the new believers will eventually learn and do. Yah’s peace and blessings upon you.

The Holy Spirit is definitely bringing up the remnant of Adonai by bringing it back to basics. It is amazing to me how the same message that we give in our congregation is repeated here… almost verbatim. I’ve never heard this gentleman speak till today ❤

Excellent interview, David. I especially liked the analogy of the muddy carpet. If you don't mind, I may actually use that!!

I love this! Thank you David for doing this interview. I'm buying Dr. Averbeck's book now (actually buying 2, one for me and one for my father who is extremely knowledgeable about the bible but doesn't yet see the truth of the ongoing validity of the law of Moses. This type of work might just be the breakthrough needed. He's old school like Dr. Averbeck❤). Thank you, thank you!

Great interview! I'm glad more scholars are on the better starting place of asking *how the Law applies rather than *does the Law apply.

I take issue with Averbeck’s position on acts 15/21 and 1 Corinthians 9. Gentiles cannot live a different life than that of Jews. There is one law for native and sojourners (Numbers 15). Also, I wished you would’ve pressed him a little on his response to the obvious problem of his take on Paul being a deceitful hypocrite in 1 Cor 9. He even noted the problem with his interpretation but his answer wasn’t an answer at all. Good interview otherwise. I enjoy you interviewing these scholars.

Thank you for the interview David. I also was a bit confused when he brought up the Jerusalem council. He seemed to imply that Gentiles and Jews had a different walk when it comes to the law. Maybe I misunderstood. Clarification would be appreciated.

@DavidWilber 👊YES!! I discovered something called the Clement Homily Books. Books that were penned by an early an Church Father held aside & private dispersed in the early church years. The internal evidence suggests they were originally written before most of the New Testament, because Peter was still eating separately. The commandments and purifications were still kept. Also Peter dispels myths of The Giants, debates Simon Mangus & more, explains Parables and so much more it unlocks the whole new testament. I started a channel to post free audio Books of "forgotten church history"; such as: Clement Homily Books, again which are 20 books of Peter's preaching and debates Also Didache and more to come. God bless you & yours 🤗

How do we keep the monetary part of the law? (Specifically the usage of "Silver" and "Barley"). For Example: Leviticus 27:16 [16]And if a man shall sanctify unto the LORD some part of a field of his possession, then thy estimation shall be according to the seed thereof: an homer of barley seed shall be valued at fifty shekels of silver.

That is talking about Assessing the value of the land based on how much seed it takes to plant it. Also how many years until the year of jubilee needs to be taken into account . Read that verse in the NLT and it’s way easier to understand.

At about timestamp 7:00 another point is that many people that have been grafted onto the family of Ha-Shem, understand things from a Hebraic mindset,to the Greek or Hellenistic mindset. Just my prayer thoughts whilst watching. 🛐🔎✒️📜🫀🔍👂👣🖖 ps: Shalom and blessings to All this Yom Kippur

If Matt 5v17-19 still stands and does not differentiate between Jew and Gentile, how can he say that Acts 15 say gentiles can live their gentile way and jews their Jewish way. Is there not one law for all, is there not no more jew and gentile but one new man, if the prophet say the law is on our hearts under the new covenant is that only for the jews then? I dont see Matt 23v1-3 being referenced in light of Matt 5v17-19, the first part of v3 especially

The enemy and men make divisions in the law. Separating old Testament from the new Testament. Bringing division. Scripture says Yah is One. This includes Yah, the Son, the Spirit, and His Word. They are all of One. No division. Division grows men's ideas, doctrines and the carnal mind's explanation of scripture, which is the absence of full Truth!

“To the Jews I became a Jew To those under the law, as under the law” Why do people make this an unnecessary redundancy? If those two statements are one, why make two statements when he doesn’t do this in the rest of the passage? 30:47

The Torah and gospel given to Abraham is still relevant, the law of Abraham is the law of Christ, the amendment given to Moses was due to sin and is the law of sin and death.
