Our Omega estate gets a new timing belt and other work after doing very well over the past few years. Much deserved TLC with more to come!

Another entertaining video Dougie. The rear arches will soon be rusty again, especially on the ultra salty Scottish roads. Removing the rubber inserts from the side panels of the rear loadspace will reveal more grot inside the rear wings (and above the arches) - an ideal time to squirt some rust prevention in there onto the inside top of the arches. Surface rust on the front chassis rails is the least of your problems. The offside scuttle drain empties into the chassis rail, leading to a crumbly bulkhead and potential for the steering box to become unstable in time. For the sake of a bolt, clips, and a couple of connector plugs, the whole intake / MAF assembly just lifts out, making any work on the front of the engine much easier. Looking forward to the next installment.👌

Takes me right back to my days as an apprentice did a quite few of these belts, it got to point where I was known in the workshop as the cambelt kid good times😂. I remember Essex police had two estates but with the 3.2 V6 on a 6speed manual box which I believe was from America. Very quick for what it was, and suspension wise I'm sure they both had some sort of active damping. Keep up the good work Dougie👍🏻

It seems crazy that timing belts were introduced as a convenient improvement over the faff of changing timing chains, and it’s now mutated into changing perfectly good water pumps and tensioner assemblies as well every few years “while you’re in there”. Did you compare old and new out of interest ?

Owned a 2001 2.2 cdx petrol auto brought it for 700 quid with no history 145k miles intending to drive it for the remainder of its mot then scrap, but I ended up driving it for 4 years did autogearbox fluid and timing belt at 150k and she finally got overwhelmed with rot by 176k miles but I still managed to sell to a omega enthusiast for 300 quid. Best car I ever owned, being a wagon it had mega boot space for my fishing gear, only downside is 23mpg and oil leaks.

Thanks for sharing BTW you can get a VW "99" Wiper relay which is programmable . It fits in the same socket under the bonnet no problem. When you want an intermittent wipe you just switch the wiper off using the stalk on the steering and when you want the wipers to wipe you simply switch the intermittent wipe back on. The relay remembers the time delay between off & on and will wipe using that interval

Those Vauxhall V6 engines of that time (along with Ford's equivalents) were extremely sensitive to coolant levels and to coolant condition. They were consequently rather prone to head gasket failure, an expensive job because of the two heads. Also beware of failure of the plastic impeller in the coolant pump.

Better than the Senator? The lack of a senator estate was something I couldn't get my head around. Ford had a Scorpio estate, BMW had one in the 5 series but I know really that the BMW 7 series was actually the rival for the senator. So why did GM go with the estate on the Omega?? I've seen I think senator hearses which in all tense and purposes is an estate so surely they could have designed a good rear end and given the Traffic police something else to put all their gear in. I wonder if anyone has even put the C30SE engine into an omega.

The Omega was definitely the best mass market executive saloon easily the equal of a BMW 5 Series and sportier drive than a Mercedes. Audis are built and finished fantastically but they have a different driveline front wheel drive or four wheel drive. The closest Mass Market Executive to drive was the Granada Scorpio but the Cologne V6 wasn't a patch on the smooth GM V6s. Peugeot 605, Rover 827, Citroën XM, Renault Safrane, Passat V6, Hyundai Sonata, Kia Magentis were all just bigger, softer better equipped V6 Cavaliers. The Toyota Camry, Nissan QX and Honda Legend were very special and solidly built but still front wheel drive and the Legend cost as much as a BMW. The Omega kept the recipe of the Senator and multiplied it by 10. A truly great car in six cylinder form. The Omega Estate was as good as the Mercedes E Class and really Shamed the 5 Series Touring.
