“Literally” has been used in a contradictory way for centuries by some of the most famous and well respected authors. Mark Twain described Tom Sawyer as “literally rolling in wealth”. F Scott Fitzgerald remarked that Jay Gatsby “literally glowed”. James Joyce wrote about a Mozart piece as “literally knocking everything else into a cocked hat”. Not to mention Jane Austen, Charles Dickens and Henry David Thoreau. It was also quite popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. But hey, Mr. Bardyman, I'm sure you have literary authority to say we all use it wrong. How many books have you written?

mr simon P the way I phrased my sentence "[...] figuratively uing the world literally wrong" I hoped it would somehow sound funny, or at least not serious. Although I did not in fact know that it was used in "oldish" popular books in that manner (i thought it was a 1990-2xxx phenomena), i am and was quite aware that it is common to be used in the way LEEboneisDaMan did. ZesPak: Except now it is it's own synonym and means both as defined by recent editions of Webster's dictionary as well as the Oxford Dictionary because of its use over the course of the centuries. It's part of the language, deal with it. Nice strawman with that slavery comment, though.

BRO Now that I think about it the sentence itself is not wrong, but it implied that the masses believe the lie. But you also say nobody believes it, so that's weird. Also, in real life it isn't a lie so there's that.

Independent research would require traveling to a place and interviewing people, not reading a website. Nobody (well, nobody with a job) has the time to the do the former, and the latter is just as likely to give you false information as accurate information.

Kayla B the Colbert report used to be my favorite show. I’ve just been exceptionally disappointed in him at the late show or whatever he’s on. I don’t think he’s that funny there and at times it feels forced and awkward.
