The soil doesn't need to be uniform in natural systems. It's only with monocultures that knowing exact ratios becomes economically important.

@wasssssuppppppp 2 года назад
Well a pasture is all grass of some kind but not necessarily a monoculture. There could be a diversity of species. Still, most would prefer a higher fungus:bacteria ratio. Useful knowledge.

@@wasssssuppppppp A pasture is not all grass. Grasses are a subset of herbaceous plants. There are many herbaceous non-grass, for example legumes, that are beneficial for pasture.

Diego, is there a succession chart for residential/small growers for a variety of 'typical' plants and crops? Also, love Dr. Elaine...wonder if you could get a TikTok of folks attempting to say, as Elaine does...the required plant nutrients other than N-P-K really fast. CONTEST...hilarious.

That there are swings in ratio as the seasons change is great info. How can gardeners measure the ratio? Is adjusting it all about inoculation and soil amendments? Or do you really have to go through the steps of the succession as permaculture would have it?

how can we increase fungal ratio in soil.
@PaulLadendorf

Three obvious questions: 1. How do you measure fungi/bacteria levels in soil? 2. Is there a list of plants and their optimum fungi to bacteria ratio? 3. How do you increase fungi or bacteria levels?

1. Gots to put in the time with microscope to figure out if you have fungi and beneficial bacteria. 2. Yeah, she has a chart weeds like bacteria, the brassicas, then the stuff we all like to grow like a 1 to 1 ratio, shrubs like more fungi and then forests love high fungi. 3. Compost a very diverse set of plant material. Fungi like humus bacteria like sugars

Thank you Diego. This clip was a gold nugget of knowledge. I've been using arborist wood mulch and amending with compost/vermicompost in teas or top dressed in my sandy soil in everything I have grown and Ingham explains succinctly what I'm seeing with my own eyes. People said I shouldn't add that much mulch to my newly planted muscadine grape vines because of fungal diseases but they are vigorous and healthy and all of my vegetables, fruits, bushes are thriving so I feel the soils have enough of fungus and bacteria to give the plants what they need.

Is there a diagram of annual vegetable crops etc and their successional roles that anyone knows of? My bio intensive mentor was telling me that he uses local texas things that are pioneer species that also produce food for new beds which is what I did last year. I understand general succession, but how do you find information on succession just in annual crops... like what she mentioned brassicas to kale to tomatoes to blueberries

In the future, please ask the guest (Dr Elaine Ingram in this case) to footnote or provide references for what she says. My experience with vermiculture is not consistent with her findings because worms love to consume all microbes including fungi, and because AFAIK fungi grow more slowly than bacteria and viruses, fungi can be eliminated completely from soil where worms are present. This suggests to me (although with an enormous hole in its logic) that fungi are merely coincidentally present in old growth compost due to lack of a worm population, and so might provide benefits(motive?) that are better provided by other creatures like worms. Also, maybe because I'm fairly new to this but I don't know of any direct benefit to plants that fungi is known to provide. Maybe I'm just missing that info so far but it's my impression that different types of bacteria are probably most critical for plant nutrient uptake with other organisms including fungi contributing in supporting roles. TIA if anyone ever posts a comment filling in gaps in my knowledge in this post.

Microscope, learn to recognize the parts, you want 5 x the fungi and good amount of bacteria.

Microscope and either identification manually to isolate different counts of spore & cfu counts.. there is a following that are attempting to train AI to count individual strains and types but that's top of the line tech.. maybe there are open source versions? 🤷

Highly educational! What increases fungal growth? Specific type of manure, compost ingredients?

Johnson Su Bioreactor used wood chips to make fungal dominant compost. Nicole Masters used Aspen and Cottonwood. She added a little fish hydrolyslate and pig manure. She began by giving pigs 200 cubic yards of white wood chips which she took away and added some worms. The pigs ate some of the wood chips. Su of Johnson Su said buy a shredder that makes small pieces so your worms can handle them. I get whole tree mulch from my local tree trimming service. If you live close to one, they will often dump the mulch for free at the place of your choosing, especially if it will save them fuel or having to pay for a place to dump the mulch. I put about 1-2 inch layer of mulch in my raised beds as needed, typically after the plants have grown tall enough to be above the mulch after I place it in order to suppress weeds. I fill my walk paths with 6-8 inches whenever possible. I have found that this really helps reduce the soil temperature, which helps the plants uptake nutrients. In early spring, once every year or two, I rake the heavy mulch aside in my walk paths and collect the fine, broken down material and then I rake the heavy mulch aside in my beds and apply the broken down material from my walk path to my beds. Then I rake the heavy mulch back into place as it was before. It is best not to apply heavy mulch into your beds before you plant. Fungus grows naturally in this material. It may take some time for it to get established and it may take longer for your mulch to break down in the beginning, but as your fungal network develops, the breakdown process occurs faster, especially during wet years or if you can keep your mulch damp. You can also inoculate the wood chips with the fungus of your choice if you want to help the process along.

I do similar as Horse237. My understanding is that best wood chips comes from smaller branches, 2” diameter and less, as they carry more funghi capacity than the larger trunks of trees per chip.
