The Original Era: Still The Best Star Wars Era? 

One thing that always surprises me is how accepted the differences between prequel and original yoda are. Side by side they dont even feel like the same character. Empire yoda feels more like a goofy old man who knows more than he lets on to someone so much more serious. I dont see Yoda from the prequels beating r2 with the stick over something

So... if you watched A New Hope, you'd have heard Luke mention in the "this is how we're going to attack the Death Star" scene, that Luke says "I used to bullseye wamprats back home, they're not much bigger than two meters." Luke has practice making the shot on the Death Star, and is either likely channeling the Force, or Obi-Wan is guiding him.

The Jabba thing was a weird point, because that was a deleted scene originally. Was never in the films originally.

Luke didn't have "No Training". They specifically say in the film that the T-16 Skyhopper is very similar to an X-Wing

I'm tired of people saying "oh the ewoks ruin this movie they were only in there to sell toys they're so dumb" when you think about how Luke's interaction with the Ewoks shows how much his character has grown from when he first met Yoda (another diminutive being) in the prior episode you see how it added to the story.

I must point out, the human version of Jabba the Hutt was not in episode 4. It was a deleted scene.

Luke was already regarded as a great pilot before the Death Star he was trained

Luke didn't just guess with Leia. Luke reached out to Leia in The Empire Strikes Back and felt her presence in the force. It's not much of a jump to think a female of your same age that also is strong in the force may be Luke's twin sister.

It's still amazing to me how much lore and world building George Lucas and the rest of the crew put into A New Hope which would of course get expanded more in The Empire Strikes Back and subsequent entries in the franchise, like everytime I go back and watch A New Hope I'm always like how did they know to set this up knowing X Y and Z would happen in the future even though obviously they didn't know it would become a franchise that would last close to 50 years they just did great lore and world building in the first movie.

Great video overall, the only thing I'd say is there is a difference between Luke and Rey. Luke mentions blasting womprats and depending on the version Biggs also says Luke is "the best bush pilot in the outer rim", I think these can be sorta missed in the excitement, but we also get the Obi wan training scene, which I think is ultimately what lets him succeed, he is told to not trust his eyes, not trust the targeting computer, but instead the force. His victory in that moment and his abilities are pretty well set up, for example he is never mentioned as being a great duelist, we don't see him training to duel and he then loses to Vader. Ray on the other hand had actually 0 training pretty much, I think it's a problem even before the kylo ren fight. Luke is a farmer at the start, he gets ambushed by tusken raider and gets knocked out, Ray is beating people up with her stick from pretty much the start of the movie. In the Kylo Ren fight she holds out and injures Kylo and gets away, now sure Kylo isn't as powerful as Vader probably but still. I think in the end it's how much they rely on the force to win, Luke with little training gets a nudge from the force to hit a lucky shot, maybe improves his reflexes to fly better, Ray with no training gets a random powerup and beats a trained duelist and force user.

The throne room interaction between the Emperor and Luke is one of the most memorable scenes in all of cinema, for me. The emperor's pure evil and hubris is on display, and Luke really struggles against the temptation of the dark side. Plus Ian McDiarmid absolutely nailed the role of a cackling, evil villain who truly enjoys being evil. He even met or exceeded that performance in the prequels, which made Palpatine/Sidious one of the best movie villains ever.

The green lightsaber during filming was specifically because the blue one didn't show up great against the tatooine sunlight. They wanted a bigger contrast.

It is mentioned that Luke is a good pilot in episode four and fly the real version of the toy that he was holding in a garage seen though trench's on Tatooine shooting animals. So I don't think that it is undeliverable for Luke to blow up the death star. You could also say the Ray had training with her stick thing on Jakko but i still think that it is more unrealistic that ray could defeat Kylo-ren.

Am I missing something? Jabba continuity? Jabba was never in A New Hope. He was discussed. The human actor was a deleted scene that was later used with digital Jabba.

I don’t think the Luke and Rey being untrained comparisons are the same. Luke WAS a pilot. And they do establish that he had experience hitting small targets on Tatooine, similar to the shot he’d have to hit on the Death Star. Still not very believable? Perhaps, but they do set it up a little bit. And Luke let’s the force guide him during the trench run. Which they also set up with the training Kenobi gave him on the Falcon. When he has to deflect the shots without use of his eyes. It was essentially teaching him precognition. Again, maybe not the strongest set up. But it is there. Rey went from 0 lightsaber or force training to using advanced force techniques and winning a fight against a fully trained opponent. There was no set up for any of that, not even a weak one. That’s why she caught the Mary Sue allegations immediately (which she had a REALLY strong case for being). The only explanation for it is “the force”. Which is technically always a reason in Star Wars, but a super weak/cop out reason. And her immediate use of force powers is just the writer doing whatever the hell he wants. Even something simple like Telekinesis is not picked up that easily. Even Jedi masters can struggle with it if they’ve been out of practice. The force powers especially were just blatantly ignoring any sort of rules. These things have always required training.

Boy oh boy. Okay, first thing's first. That Jabba scene (with the human Jabba) is a deleted scene that was only put in the ANH retroactively in the special edition, using the Jabba they ended up actually going with in ROTJ. So your argument really holds no water there. As for Luke blowing up the Death Star. The film set up that Luke was a good pilot, like his father. It is mentioned that the X-Wing was similar to the ship that Luke flew on Tatooine. He said that he used to fly through Beggers Canyon (a small narrow trench) and bullseye womprats that were about the size of the exhaust port of the Deathstar. So the film set up that he had unknowingly developed the skills that he needed in that trench run. And even with all of that set up, Luke made a bunch of mistakes during the death star battle. 1. Luke flew too close to the surface of the Deathstar in his very first act in the battle and almost dies right away. 2. He fails to shake a Tie fighter off, after getting hit and has to be saved by Wedge. 3. Failed to prevent Biggs (his childhood friend) from dying. 4. Vader had a lock on Luke and the only reason why Luke didn't die was because Han came from out of nowhere and saved him, which is what allowed Luke to be able to take the shot; his trust in the force did the rest. Was this anything similar to what happened in TFA? Not at all. For it to have been similar, Luke would've had to single-handedly taken Vader out in a 1v1 aerial battle, in which Luke had never flown a ship before. You probably need to watch the OT again. It may have its flaws, but it was still competently written. Especially compared to anything in the ST.

A couple observations about Empire: there was only one flaw, and it's a nitpick I know, but of the entire planet of Dagobah, Luke just happened to crash right into the place where Yoda was living; there was no implication that he found the exact spot due to a Force influence or whatever, which is what I think they should have done to eliminate the need for suspension of disbelief on that one little flaw in the otherwise perfect movie. On another Empire note, as a kid I always wondered what the deal was with Lobot on Cloud City, ever-present like an assistant yet creepily never saying a word, with the odd name and that weird head gadget, in the background of almost every scene with Lando in it. Was he just there so there'd be another action figure to sell? I don't think Lucas ever said anything about it, but when I rewatched the OT in preparation for the release of the prequels, it hit me. In the scene after they put Han in the carbonite, Vader alters the deal and says he will take Chewy and Leia with him instead of leave them in Cloud City like he first agreed, Lando looks at Lobot who looks back with a side-eye. That's when I realized that Lobot probably was meant to represent Lando's conscience, watching him, silently prodding him to have the change of heart that defined his arc. If that truly was the purpose of Lobot, it was so thematically clever and cinematographically perfect. Finally, regarding your statement that Jabba was "just a man" in Episode IV, the scene you showed with the big guy in the scruffy suit talking to Han never appeared in the original theatrical release; prior to RotJ, we only knew Jabba by name mentioned in the first two films. Lucas took that 1977 cut scene and CGI-d slug-Jabba in and added it to the Special Edition release in the 1990s, which I feel like that was a colossal mistake; it diminished the despicable mystique of Jabba to see him outside his lair moving around around like everybody else.

in fact there is a very big difference between Luke's actions being acceptable at the end of episode 4 and Rey's actions at the end of episode 7 being completely illogical. Luke was able to use the force and connect to it to discover the Death Star's weak point. He wasn't facing another force user. Rey, on the other hand, was able to easily deal with Kylo Ren, a user of the dark side in episodes 8 and 9, and beat everything she wanted because the script simply wanted it, including releasing force lightning without any training. the end of episode 7 isn't exactly a problem, since Rey doesn't win the battle itself, but the planet starts to fall apart, the problem is that she's a Mary Sue in episodes 8 and 9. Not even Anakin, the chosen one, won battles without training and not even he learned strength techniques out of nowhere.

I remember that George Lucas wasn’t even sure if he could get a sequel for the OT so he put the Death Star in the first one but kept the same idea for the latter two movies after A New Hope’s success. Hence two Death Stars.

Prequel era is the coolest imo, the prequels themselves fleshed out the galaxy and was a bit more new looking in general a la the 1950s to the industrial look of the OT's 70s-80s aesthetic. I also like the political stuff, and though the story of the films isn't entirely focused on it it genuinely feels bigger in a way than the OT. The planets felt more alien, the conflict seemed more intergalactic, and the galaxy just generally felt massive. Not to say the OT didn't, but I think George did an amazing job with the prequels and that people hate them without having a good reason to lmao

Great video. I adore Empire Strikes Back and Rogue One. I agree pretty much with everything you said. Still I wished you mentioned Andor series as well, cause I think it's great and I believe it belongs to the original era. I really wanted to know what your take is about Andor. It's different from every other Star Wars thing I have watched partially because it's not stacked with cheap cameos and starts slow and yet has great pay offs. I know there's still a final season two which hasn't come out yet but imo season one was truly amazing.

I’m so glad you mentioned the final 1/3 of the movie dragging. I’ve always felt like the movie falls off the deep end once the space battle starts. I’ve never heard anyone ever say their favorite Star Wars line or moment came from that part of the film

I rewatched A New Hope a while back with a similar mindset of “what if I was watching this for the first time with no foreknowledge of anything else Star Wars?” And I came to a similar conclusion. It’s still a really well-made film. The only thing that sticks out to me is how sudden the Rebellion shows up in the third act. We get a lot of views into the Empire, and we hear about a rebellion but suddenly they’re on Yavin 4 to drop off Princess Leia and Luke is suited up for the battle and it’s like…. Ok I guess these are the rebels and they’re about to have a battle all of a sudden. The deleted scene with Luke and Biggs might have eased this by giving us more info on who the rebels are and the fact that a lot of people in the galaxy have to choose between accepting the Empire (and going to the Academy like Luke plans) and running off to join the rebels. It’s also difficult now to separate Star Wars as films vs as entires in this franchise that we all have complex feelings about. Even if you hate Rogue One as a movie (I don’t but I don’t love it either) you now have to accept that it is the canon for what happened immediately before the start of A New Hope. I find that very Interesting. Thinking of them as entries in a franchise vs independent movies of their own is how you get people watching Rogue One and forgetting how boring most of it is and instead coming out of the theater going “wow that was badass when Darth Vader killed all those guys” even if it doesn’t do much for the story or even align with the Vader we see in the next film. And to be fair, I think the same about wise sage Yoda from the OT becoming ketamine frog Yoda from the PT. George did that because “Yoda should be badass” not “Yoda needs to use a lightsaber for story/thematic reasons.”

I think its more believable that Luke could destroy the death star despite not being a super experienced pilot then it is for Rey to beat Kylo Ren. I compare Luke fighting Vader in ESB and how he really stood no chance. Obviously Kylo is not on Vaders level but its the same sort of line up. I also think about Anakin flying in the Phantom Menace and how he destroyed the separatist ship. He had never flown before but somehow managed to pull that off. I think Star wars has always shown us that even a novice with the force can use it to greatly increase their piloting But i do agree there are things in the originals such as the Jabba change or Leia and Luke being siblings reveal that people would be more critical of in a movie today. I grew up with the Jabba that it was changed to, i had no idea Jabba was ever different until a few years ago but thats just when i was born

The biggest problem with Rey defeating Kylo Renn in episode 7 is that it takes away Kylo as a threat, Rey's character development and hype for future fights. It's as if Luke Skywalker would defeat Darth Vader in episode 4, Darth Vader isn't this scary villain anymore, Luke Skywalker won't have much room to develop more in ep 5 and 6, the next fights between Luke and Vader aren't intense anymore and the next episodes overall are now a bit boring because the villain isn't a threat.

I grew up on the Prequel Era and adore it, but the Original Era just is the best. Because you have to be a fan of additional pieces of media like The Clone Wars and The Bad Batch to truly appreciate the Prequel Era. There is beauty in simplicity. You can watch Rogue One, A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of The Jedi without any additional media necessary.

Luke was already a skilled pilot on Tatooine and was familiar with vehicles similar to an X-Wing. Furthermore, Luke received weeks, perhaps even a month of training under Yoda and still lost to Vader. Even Anakin, the chosen one, received a decade of training and still lost to Dooku. In both cases, the Skywalkers had to take their prior knowledge of their opponents combat styles and adjust their training as well as construct better-suited lightsaber hilts to overcome them. Rey picked up a lightsaber once and beat Kylo Ren. Then she beat him again and nearly killed him. If anything, Kylo Ren was the one on the hero’s journey trying to beat Rey and he wasn’t even the protagonist😂

well the thing is luke and rey both kind of had training luke was a very experienced pilot with a ship that had almost the same exact controls as the x wing and said he could hit womprats with it for fun basically without knowingly using the force which are smaller than the target he was aiming for on the death star with the force and rey used a staff pretty well before using a lightsaber which is kinda similar

correct me if i'm wrong, but i think the theatrical release of a new hope didn't include the human Jabba scene. all the info discussed in that interaction was communicated in Han's conversation with Greedo, and Jabba himself didn't appear until later rereleases of the film

It's weird but not until Rogue One and the Detail shown about the Sheild & Gate that I realized in ROTJ they referred to it for the Moon of Endor, but just skipped it (probably too costly in 1982). The Big White Star Destroyer used for close-up shots cost about $35,000 in 1979.

I saw Empire Strikes Back (my favorite of all the films) as an adult and as soon as I saw Luke cut Vader's head off, only to see himself in the helmet, I knew that if Luke actually killed Vader, he would be killing himself. Ergo, Vader was Luke's father. And I was right!

Really enjoyed this and the previous PT videos, not sure if you’ll do an ST video at some point, but think lots of us would definitely enjoy it. And looks like lots of the toxic SW haters pretending to be “fans” got riled up for being called out for their grotesque hypocrisy and blatant lack of self-awareness when it comes to the OT. Just plain old haters who will ALWAYS be nothing but FAKE “fans”. Keep up the great content, esp SW if you’re open to it.

One thing I wish I could do relating to Star Wars is completely wipe it from my mind so I could watch it all (or at least the good stuff) for the very first time in chronological order. Like watch episode 1 and 2 then clone wars, then episode 3 then the original trilogy etc. I think it would be an awesome way to experience it, and if I were ever to show someone Star Wars who had never seen it that's how I'd do it.

In regards to @TheThriftyTypewriter's comments at the 31:48 mark; Luke was already an experienced pilot, who was even trying to sign up to join the Empire/Imperial Academy...In a New Hope he wants to join the Imperial Academy but Uncle Owen says he has to work another year on the farm. George Lucas also added a ton of references to Luke already having been a pilot (Luke owns a T-16, Biggs says Luke is the "Best Bush pilot in the galaky"...obviously he's being generous as any friend would but you get the point. Also Luke mentions in the briefing room that he would bullseye womp rats in his T-16 back home that are about the same size as the shaft in the Death Star.

I was 4 when Star Wars came out, it pretty much defined our childhood for 8 years. If we weren’t watching the films, discussing them we were playing with the toys all day or role playing outside. Even though Atari existed video games were not really prevalent so we immersed ourselves in a galaxy, far, far away. There is this deliberate narrative put out by Rian Johnson after The Last Jedi was trashed that EMPIRE was not critically well received and if made today would face backlash just on how much Luke failed, alone. So absurd, EMPIRE had very few critics and the ones that were trashing it as “childish” were taken out back by the likes of Roger Ebert and beaten. EMPIRE stands alone as a great film, it made many kids of my generation want to become film makers. Its the one i have watched the most and the reason in my opinion that there is this passionate fan base that is appalled and insulted by what Disney has done. We tolerated the prequels but the new trilogy? Fuck that garbage and its telling that JJ has stated that he was a Return Of The Jedi fan more than EMPIRE. Even at 10 years old the Ewoks and the battle on Endor made me cringe. Tarzan Chewie, rocks vs armoured troopers and vehicles and under utilized Han Solo help me move on from Star Wars toys. There were cool moments in JEDI and the over all ending of the character’s storylines was good…..especially Luke’s because i dint think people remember that he was not a beloved character up to the release of EMPIRE, he was always thought of as whiney but by the time JEDI ended he became pretty bad ass.

In fact, Jabba the Hutt never appeared as a human in any of the commercially-released Star Wars films. The docking bay confrontation scene between Han and Jabba and his retinue was filmed with a human standing in for a special effects Jabba, planned to be inserted in post production. However, Lucas ran out of time and money and the scene was cut from all versions of A New Hope until the Special Edition, wherein digital Jabba was added (at least two times, with varying degrees of success).

I loved the spacebattle part. I really enjoyed at the tine. Seeing what looked like (for the time period) real space. Its probably a generation thing. If you had not seen it before, seeing spaceships blaze around in space was mind blowing when it was fresh and new. I agreed with almost all your views though. There is definitely too much teaming up with all the trilogys. When really we should just be thankful a lot of them were so good.

Great retrospective

I loved the trench run in the original _Star Wars_ film when I saw it in 1977. In most _Star Wars_ video games in which one could fly, it was also my favorite part. I also liked flying into the second Death Star, although I thought having a second Death Star was super derivative, even back in 1983.

Andor is probably the best recent thing to come out of this era. Odd that you kinda just glossed over it.

I love these so much but I also have such fear when thinking about what might be said about the sequels but I did agree with his opinion on Luke and Rey being able to do incredible feats in both of their first outings so I am glad I am not that entrenched and willing to die on certain hills. Looking forward to it somewhat but at the same time there is such fear especially since I loved the prequels so much.

32:05 Imma just say, Luke stated that he was shooting womp rats in his t-16, claiming that he has practice and experience doing something similar to hitting the death star shot. In addition to this, we see him training his (imma just call it this) senses amplification with Obi-Wan, so we know he has at least trained that as well. I don't think it's necessarily having it both ways, but we can see that Luke has more training and experience than Rey for their respective tasks.

For me what I always loved about Star Wars was the space battles while a lot of people wanted to be Jedi’s I was wishing I could a Rebel pilot flying an X wing and you make a good that the space battle isn’t that eventful which is why I love the space battle of Endor in ROTJ, it’s more entertaining and chaotic and I love that they had to fly inside the Death Star and lando flying out at the last minute before it explodes always gives me goosebumps. Also an interesting trivia fact, for ESB the Darth Vader reveal was almost gonna be him saying Obi Wan Killed Luke’s Father but Lucas decided to combined Vader and Luke’s father into one character. Also with the Ewoks it was originally supposed to be Wookiees and they would’ve been on Kashyyk but switched to Ewok because it was cheaper for them. Another thing I laughed my ass off when you put the picture of TWD when you mentioned Cliffhangers, as a Walking Dead fan that cliffhanger will forever haunt me 😆

Jabba wasn’t in the theatrical cut of A New Hope at all, though. That was a deleted scene. I honestly believe the theatrical OT is nearly flawless. Return of the Jedi was the only one that had a small issues. First of all, there’s the Luke and Leia siblings twist. I wish Luke’s sister had been a completely different character. If so, we probably would have even more girl Star Wars fans. I don’t think we needed another Death Star, but think about it: the Empire WOULD make another Death Star. They can, and there was absolutely no reason they wouldn’t. I’m personally so excited for Andor S2. Andor is some of the best Star Wars we’ve ever gotten, and people aren’t really appreciating it enough. Hopefully we get more content like Andor.

On the 'Hypocrisy' section: Point #1: Yes, Jabba's character was changed. However, (virtually?) no one outside of Lucasfilm saw the deleted scenes with Han and Jabba in ANH before the Special Editions, when Lucas decided to add it back in. He is quoted in interviews as saying he simply changed the character design, but the 'fat guy' wasn't even a final filmed scene. That guy was, even then, just a stand in for whatever creature Lucas ended up going with for Jabba and, thus, should not be taken in any way as a form of Jabba. Point #2: Luke was not 'tapping into' the Force, he was literally being guided in how to use it and connect to it by a Jedi Master from beyond the grave. Also, remember Luke was the actual 'Chosen One' and had a very strong innate connection to the Force because of it. Sidious had no such special connection to the Force; as far as the Force goes, he was no one special until he upset the balance. I say this because Rey would have then not inherited any special connection to the Force, but she is able to duel - and defeat!? - a seasoned and very skilled lightsaber combatant. This is not a fair comparison. If Luke had fought and defeated Vader at the end of ANH and it was conveyed that Rey has some special force prodigy status AND was being guided by a Jedi Master, it would be fair to call this stance hypocrisy. Point #3: I'm not sure how thinking the sibling reveal of Luke and Leia is hypocrisy? I mean, yeah, not the strongest plot point, but it was done to tie things up a little more cleanly and set up future stories. Point #4: At least in the OT, they admitted (both the Empire and the writers) that you CAN'T top a moon-sized, mobile, planet-destroying super-weapon/space station, so let's just build one WITHOUT the obvious weak spot this time. Also throw in that it was part of the Emperor's plan to lull the Rebels into a sense of overconfidence, seeing as they had already destroyed one of these before. Plus, given the time, it was easier to re-use the Death Star - a plot device the then-less-sophisticated audience was already familiar with and knew how dangerous it was - then to invent something new AND bring the audience up to speed. The ST, by contrast, goes to ridiculous lengths and literally copies, beat-by-beat, what the OT did, without earning the character "development" through the story like the OT did. Luke had developed piloting over time while growing up on Tatooine. He also learned how to build, repair, and take apart mechanical things such as droids, moisture evaporator, speeders, and a variety of other crafts. Obi-Wan, with what little time he had with Luke, was able to teach him how to tap into the force at a beginning level. Rey didn't have a mentor to show her. While she could very well have discovered how to feel the force on her own, she had no experience with lightsabers or lightsaber combat. Luke at least had a resume of piloting crafts. The original trilogy has Luke literally risking his life to bring his father back to the light side because of his love for his father. Then, in the sequel trilogy, he attempts to murder his own nephew just because he saw some darkness in him. I mean, REALLY?!! Kylo hadn't fallen to the Dark Side and yet Luke writes him off. Why does a man who massacres tribes, younglings, the Jedi Order and his own wife, deserve a chance over Kylo who hasn't even fallen yet?! I was hoping to see Grandmaster Luke pass the torch to Rey. But instead, Disney decided to torch our beloved Luke. And that is why they deserve our contempt. Then, they decided Agenda was going to be the story rather than the story being the Agenda.

I grow up not understanding Star Wars, I originally watched some parts of the original but didn't understand it. It was only when as a teen I watched the prequels, I feel like the prequels after rewatching them isn't very good but they made me understand that Star Wars was something I needed to really look it, I rewatched the originals and since I didn't really care the first time it was like watching them for the first time. I have come to the conclusion that the Original movies are perfect masterpieces in Everyway, unlike the Prequels. The original just wasn't for a young girl of about 7-9, I needed to grow up, and as a teen, to really understand it and appreciate it for the amazingness that it is.

Not everyone agrees that Empire Strikes Back is better than A New Hope. For me they are both equally good, although very different. Empire Strikes Back has some moments that are a bit long and not really needed, which is something that didn't happen in A New Hope, and will only get worse in Return of the Jedi. On the other hand, Empire Strikes Back probably has the strongest emotional moments compared to A New Hope.

I had to pause the video. You are aware that the original cut of Star Wars didn't include the Jabba scene, right? There's no hypocrisy here. The scenes of Jabba as a human were never included in any cut of the movie. They have only ever been viewed as deleted scenes. The scene was unfortunately put back in for the special edition which completely disrupts the flow of the movie because all of the exposition was moved to the Greedo scene and now the Jabba scene is redundant.

31:00 it wasn't a problem with the original trilogy, because the scene with Jabba being just a normal person was never IN the original movie. It was filmed, and cut. The only version of that scene that's ever been actually PART of a release of the movie was edited to have Jabba be the sluglike creature we've always known him as. 32:00 I don't entirely disagree with your take, BUT Luke does also mention specifically that he and Wedge used to shoot womp rats back on Tattooine, which were roughly the size of the exhaust port, when arguing for the plan to attack the Death Star

I was hoping to see in Rogue 1 and episode 7,8,9 a guy Named Kyle Katarn if some one not know who he is there you go: Kyle Katarn is a genuine character with an arc who is also a wish fulfillment fantasy. Has cool Jedi powers -Shoots lasers -Murders People -Breaks the law -Has an Asian waifu But what Disney has?? A Rey whit some kind of magical agenda engine who does whatever she needs to do to fit in with a predetermined narrative the writers had at her inception.

Jabba was a cut scene in new hope and the Jabba as a guy wasn’t in the theatrical cut or old vhs release

Anakin was supposed to have been the literal messiah of the Force, but still took years for him to master it. Raw talent is nothing. There are millions of people with talent. You have to learn to focus that talent, to study, to work, to train. In a deleted scene Biggs called Luke the best bush pilot in the outer territories. Luke had skills. He wasn't good at everything (like Rey) but he was good at the things he needed to be good at for the story to work. We also had Ben mention that Luke's father was the best starpilot in the galaxy, and that Luke was something of a pilot himself. We have Luke state that he's a good pilot to Han. We have Luke demonstrate that he's a good shot on the Falcon, and appears good enough that it surprises Han. Luke receives a small amount of training in the Force by Ben. Enough to learn to let the Force guide his actions. Rey is never given even that small amount of setup. She's just "the bestest ever" without that fact ever being justified in the story. That's why Rey is a Mary Sue, and Luke is not a Gary Stu.

I have an argument for the point you bring up, and that is that Luke already mentioned he was a great pilot, his friend already commented on his skill at aiming, and they had all seen the schematic. So with that it’s still a little stretch to believe he could do that, but not equal to the ray v kylo scene which had no setup of her being a competent fighter in anything else but against common thugs. It’s also argued that it was because kylo was injured, but that wasn’t clearly shown as he was still able to defeat Fin with no issue, and he was a trained fighter. (Who also was later shown to be force-sensitive, so you can’t make the argument that ray was bjust using the force to beat him…)

Vader hallway scene was the biggest impact a movie has had on me as an adult. I never thought i would see new vader content much less something so badass. I’ll never forget it

Compared to Ray's fight, I find destroying the Death Star much easier. Everyone in the squadron knew what to do and he had several wingmen trying to do the same as him. Only Luke had the support of Han who saved him. In the end, he flies straight through a tunnel and shoots into a hole. He takes out the targeting computer, but that's what he's been training for the whole movie. He doesn't use the Force to lift rocks or heal people he just believes in him like Neo when he does the Jump after training

When you were talking about the hypocrysis of fans, there is one mistake. A Jabba mistake. When they were making the New Hope, Jabba was just a guy, not a space-slug. Absolutelly true. BUT!!! This scene ended on the cutting floor. Jabba the guy was *never* in the movie. The scene was put into the movie ONLY after they changed it, after they made Jabba slug again. As for a Luke destroying the Death Star, there are still few things making it slightly more possible than impossible. He had a piloting skills from Tatooine. It is only briefly mentioned in the movie but it is there. And he has a little bit of mini-training with Kenobi about the Force and how to feel it. It is not much, true, but it is more than Ray had, when she fenced with Kylo. Besides I always suspected old Ben guiding Luke during his big shot, helping him. I always felt it wasn't all just Luke, that there was help from Ben. A little more help than just "you can do it" stuff.

I look at the OT films from the point of view of my childhood self not my adult self. So the films actually go 3, 1,2 for me. 3 looked so good. The emporers enterance on the death star, the swarming tie fighters as the rebels took the fight to the star destroyers, yes the ewoks were cool, the forest battle was cool. Everything was cool about that film. The 2nd left me disappointed as it ended on a cliff hanger and my childhood self wanted a proper finish of some sort, eg a big fight to get Han back. The 1st because without it there would be nothing to follow plus the scene where Luke switches off his targeting computer still gives me goosebumps to this day and makes the journey of the rest of the film worth it to reach that emotional peak. I will never choose to look at these films from my adult perspective because I could easily pick on its flaws and that feels like a betrayal to my childhood self.

The issue with Rey beating Kylo was that it diminished his character in order to build hers, she could have done something else epic using the force that led to an escape and it probably wouldn't have stunk so bad. Luke never got close to beating Vader, in fact he barely escape Vader cause of a last minute surprise from Han solo. That's the difference. Luke used the force to destroy a machine that had even been criticized by Vader as insignificant. Rey beat a significantly more powerful user of the force (at that time) by somehow using more force. To me it was a stinker, but I was also a bit biased against it going in.

A New Hope is a product of his time. The last battle scene in it is one of the best parts of the whole movie!!!

I like Rogue One, but I think the whole premise is kind of dumb. I mean, did people really not grasp that the Death Star's weakness in A New Hope was reflective of the Empire's arrogance and overreach? "The more you tighten your grip the more star systems will slip through your fingers." It's spelled out pretty clearly.

Even though I was born in 2002 I saw the original trilogy before seeing him in the prequels and clone wars. So when I would see him portrayed with a lightsaber in the LEGO game or clone wars at 6 years old I was confused because I didn’t remember him ever using a lightsaber. Or R2-D2 flying.
