One of my fathers favorite artist. I really loved the song "Hold On To What You've Got." Being a 70's child "I Got Cha" and "Ain't Gonna Bump No More With No Big Fat Woman" were two other songs I liked by him. Remember him performing it on Soul Train. No, I never knew about the J. Tex & J. Brown rivalry. Thanks for this history on the talented singer and performer Joe Tex. 💞🎶🎼🎵 Ps, I loved the animated clip too.

My favorite song is the one where he said " the battery fell dead right in the heart of town, embarrassing me..." I was a little girl when my mom gave a reply to his confession: "I guess so!" My favorite Tex song is "Skinny Legs and all". Yes, I am familiar with the Tex-Brown rivalry. Joe was a wonderful performer, singer and songwriter. He should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He clearly put the hits up there. There are people with less hits than Joe is in the Hall of Fame. Joe's legacy continue. One of his sons, is a professional performer, singer and musician. He goes by the name "Joe Tex II".

I love his first pop top ten hit, "Hold On To What You've Got" but when i need a laugh, his 1967-1968 hit, "Skinny Legs and All" does the trick. He had quite many near top pop 40 hits, I've located some and placed them in the respective playlists. He sounded a little like Sam Cooke and Little Richard in the beginning. I heard about the rivalry with James Brown before and I was thrown by the "incident in the pool" portion in the story, as i totally didn't see that coming.

I spent some time with a guy who was Joe Tex's road manager in the late sixties and early seventies. He said that the rivalry between James and Joe was real, but as time went on, it became a way for them to each get local press. He did say that at one time, just to get up James' nose, he started billing himself as "The Soul Brother Who Doesn't Need a Number". He also said that James stole Joe Tex's trick of throwing sand on the stage so he could slip around effortlessly. Joe is one of the most unappreciated of the sixties soul giants. I think a big problem is that he spent too long trying to imitate other artists(like Sam Cooke) before he found his true voice. That and his records haven't lent themselves to being sampled like James Brown's has. I recommend anyone interested in discovering sixties soul to check out any of his records.
