Welp now I'm gonna buy a DVD player, never thought about this till you commented but a lot of people agree DVDs in general burn out lasers faster then games, a game disk only is read to load something then it stops as opposed to a DVD which is read for a much longer period of time
The reason why was because of Dolby Liscencing. They would’ve had to pay Dolby for every console manufactured, so they did this to be able to control how much they had to pay.
Well Sony isn't so innocent you had to fork out extra money for a 4 - player module. I would take the XBOX over that for the simple fact it's a gaming machine not a movie machine.
The reason they sold the kit is because it has all the DVD licensing. The console itself doesn't have the rights to play dvds. They did this to lower the unit cost. And to sell another product
back in the day they cost around the same, ig if you had money like that a xbox would be fine but bang for your buck the playstations being able to play dvds out of the box was a huge contributor to why ps2 outsold xbox. either way the xbox definetly is a badass console that deserves love!
@Thatoneretroguy no, it's not at all. Ps2 out sold the xbox because it was already a well-known platform that had been extremely successful regardless of the xbox being more powerful than the ps2. Sony already had a larger console gaming customer base. While Microsoft had a larger computer gaming platform. Which most people seeing a bran new console coming from a company that had NEVER made consoles before would be skeptic to purchase the item. It had nothing to do with ps2 being able to play DVDs litterally almost EVERY family in the USA and Japan had a DVD player and if you couldn't afford a DVD player than you couldn't afford a ps2. It had ZERO effects on the amount of consoles sold. It's the same reason why ps3 outsold xbox 360 even tho xbox 360 invented global online play and global voice chat Sony already had a larger customer base. And it's still the same reason they continue to out sell xbox even tho xbox us more powerful and cheaper for both the long and short term.
@@user-jh4sx6cl5i I like PlayStation more bc Xbox has nothing (good) that PlayStation doesn’t have. PlayStation has all the same games, and some amazing exclusives. I can’t think of a single Xbox fan who still plays Halo or Forza.
Just cool add for original Xbox was way better then ps2 it had world wide internet and better graphics you can’t base something abound sales when your console made in different country it could be lies for you know plus you know everbody over go play it Xbox USA made look number form USA there very close
It was just to sell more peripherals, honestly. They tried the same thing with the Xbox 360 when they thought that HD DVD would catch on - going so far as to make a separate drive for it.
@@SPG8989 it's always to sell, it's a product. If DVD access is locked behind a peripheral that you need to buy, it's because they want you to buy something. It's a company.
