Like if Popeye the sailor gave you reason to choke down your runny, stringy, bitter spinach at dinner when you were 3-5 yrs old, and thus the reason why you came to enjoy spinach.
I'm a big fan of cartoons (newspaper, magazine and animated), and I think Popeye might be the greatest cartoon character of all time. Fact check: Popeye's introductory story in "Thimble Theatre" did NOT involve him searching for the Wiffle Hen. Castor Oyl (Olive's brother) had already stolen the hen, which had good-luck powers, before anyone met Popeye. Then Castor hired Popeye to sail them to an island gambling resort, where Castor used the hen to get rich. Popeye also saved the crew from evildoers on the trip back home. I would have liked to hear some discussion of how great the Fleischer cartoons were, compared to how rotten the animation got under the later studios -- but I guess the clips speak for themselves.
I, too am a HUGE fan of cartoons.Wasn't there a Popeye The Sailor cartoon whose date credit said 1925; a film that included live action? I diapered kid is bullied by some neighborhood bullies. Popeye comes out of a comic book the kid buys and instructs the kid to eat spinach. The film is silent but is dubbed. Perhaps you really can't count this as a Popeye cartoon.....
@@benjaminponder4572 1. It’s “The Adventures of Popeye” 2. it was made in the 1930s right after “King of the Mardi Gras”, because 3. It’s a clip show telling us that Jack Mercer has became a permanent replacement for Will Castello, who was the original Popeye.
You forgot to mention that everyone's fav Sailor was actually based on a real person by the name of Frank "Rocky" Fiegel from Chester, Illinois, Segar's (Popeye's creator ) hometown.
1929:Popeye first appears in Thimble Theatre 1932:Bluto's only appearance in Thimble Theatre 1933:First Fleischer Popeye cartoon 1938:Death of Segar 1941:Fleischers fired from Paramount cartoon studios
The Fleischer were not "fired from Paramount Cartoons Studios." They were manipulated to surrender ownership of Fleicsher Studios in May 1941 over an alleged standing deficit from the production of GULLIVER'S TRAVELS. This is explained in detail in the book, THE ART AND INVENTIONS OF MAX FLEISCHER: AMERICAN ANIMATION PIONEER.
Popeye is definitely one of the greatest cartoon characters of all time and it's a shame how not many kids know who he is anymore. Hopefully the new movie coming out next year will do a good job of introducing the character to a new generation. I knew who popeye was at a real young age however because I grew up watching popye cartoons on boomerang and I have loved popeye pretty much ever since. I also started liking spinach a few months ago and whenever I eat it I will think of popeye!
I owe a lot to Popeye. Whenever he got into a fight with Bluto, and would get beat up, I could see myself in his place. I would have ran, but not him. He'd get back up, eat some spinach, and kick some ass. I guess that stuck with me for a while.
I remember when I was younger I would always refuse to eat any spinach unless it had Popeye on the can and my parents would make videos of me running through stores and filling the cart with the Popeye spinach
I absolutely hate the Popeye series with the cheap stiff animation. You know which one I mean. The smooth and creative animation of the original Popeye was always one of the best things about it, especially in the black and white era. But that 2:17 .... ...that is just lazy!
I'm disappointed you guys said that "Paramount Studios" gave him his own cartoon series, without any mention of the Fleischer's. Since they're the ones who produced the series from '33 to '42. And I would say they deserve more credit for being great innovators in the early days of animation.
POPEYE The Sailor as a child I couldn't get enough of him he was my favourite Cartoon character growing up I believe a Date to skate was the episode I watch hey remember this I yam what I yam
You have done "Origins" videos of Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck. You should do some for Porky Pig, Tweety, Speedy Gonzales, Foghorn Leghorn, Elmer Fudd, Yosimite Sam, Wile. E Coyote, Road Runner, Sylvester Cat, Tazz and Marvin the Martian. Unless you already have and I don't know that you have.
Ah I truly remember Popeye the sailor cartoons when they aired in the Philippineson IBC 13. I wish Good smile company will make a Figma version of POPEYE.Everybody loves POPEYE
They used to show Popeye on Boomerang a few years ago, along with tons of other cartoons from the 1930s-1960s. Tis a shame they cut him out; I miss watching him every week.
0:19 Kind of ironic that popeye was meant to encourage kids to eat spinach when popeye himself apparently was using dip AND was smoking a pipe at the same time.
Popeye was never MEANT to encourage kids to eat spinach. The spinach transformation was an idea that came from Max Fleischer, who cleverly realize its potential as a climax device that audiences would anticipate. He also came up with the love triangle of Popeye and Bluto, who was an incidental character in the comic strip and not a featured regular. All will agree that the reason why Popeye is remembered is not because of the comic strip, but because of the adaptation in animation that gave the characters greater dimension that have endeared them to the public for 90 years.
Popeye was my childhood :) ! I loved this so much . There has been studies of spinach and it helps to build up muscles on workouts and you can loose weight ! :)
I don't understand why when I was growing up there were always kids that called him "pye-pye". I couldn't relate to how P-O-P spelled "Pipe". I was even recently watching Pawn Stars and 30-ish year old Chumlee called him pye-pye. Actually maybe it's because he smokes a pipe and they really think it's "Pipe-eye" and somehow they just don't see that "O" in his name. It's baffling.
