It's normal and healthy to express grief. It's not depressing. Everyone watching your videos do so because we have connected with you on some kind of level. You give us your time and efforts making these beautiful clothes. You inspire us to express ourselves in our own way as you do in yours. Thank you. My sincere sympathy.
I feel like this kind of manual activity, traditionally assigned to women, allowed us to gather together around something (sewing, embroidering, even cooking) and share our confidences. Bianca's sewing room is our sewing room and it feels safe enough to share our sadness, our happiness, our problems, and our secrets. Is kind of an intimate connection that I have seen in IRL sewing rooms and courses. I'm very glad you feel the same ♥♥♥♥
I love the whole "I suffered making this top so you don't have to but also please feel free to also suffer" vibe of this video. The finished look with the RTW skirt is *chef's kiss*
For sewing on metallic fabrics I highly recommend using a Schmetz microtex needle. They are super sharp and pierce the metallic filaments without causing the filament to shift. I always use a new microtex needle for a project and then reuse the used needle for just regular sewing on the assumption that the needle tip could be dull, but it's still sharp enough for regular sewing.
I'm sorry to hear about your kitty. They are definitely little 'heart thieves'! No doubt, there is a cat out there that will have a great home with you and your family. 😻
"Hopefully not getting turned around" Felt that in my soul. Tried to make a skirt with pockets this weekend and ended up giving it fins instead (sewed the pockets on the outside)
Thank you for sharing your life with us and not just teaching how to sew. You are a comfort channel for me. I am sending you healing vibes and condolences for the passing of your fur baby.
Always love me a peplum. This is such a great pattern which is so flattering on you. I hope you can bring a couple of new kitties into your heart. So sorry for your loss. Hugs.
We had tinsel on our tree growing up and it gets EVERYWHERE. And it’s VERY STATICY. So probably just like your top spewing strings all over your sewing room. Lol. The tops are gorgeous, tho!
We wrapped tinsel around our banister one year and were picking bits of out of the carpet for years after that and I'm pretty sure the only reason we stopped finding it was because the carpet got replaced.
So sorry to hear that you lost your furbaby, and so soon after the last one,😥, I hope your family is doing ok, and yes they are a real part of the family. I love the top you made, shame I'm to old to wear glittery tops .💖
Loosing a pet is never easy. I lost 2 cats back in March. I know exactly how feel. When you have an animals twirling around your feet for 18 years, the house does feel weird without them. 💜
I love the look of this top! Gives me some wonderful classic sci-fi movie vibes. And I will not be working with that fabric any time soon, because if someone with your level of experience finds it tricky it's definitely not suitable for a sewing newbie like myself.
Deepest Condolences, Bianca. Yes, we do wish to know of these sad events, because you are our friend. After all, I am sure we all have "patterning tables of doom", simply due to the mistakes and fue-pa's which haunt us, from time to time. ;) I love love, love those wrap blouses in all fabrics, however, the blouses you made are Outstanding. Eye poppers for sure. :) I once made a door curtain (yes, it was strips of fabric all the way across and down to the floor) and matching window curtains for my granddaughters' room. Never again. I don't know what fabric it was, all that mattered was the glitters, sheerness, and colors. My machine needle gummed up. The fraying was driving me insane. So I researched and discovered to keep a small bottle of oil by the sewing machine to stop the gumming. (Maybe, that sewing event, was what caused my hair to gain more whiteness.) Lol. Keep doing YOU. Has anyone ever used Fray Stop? It reminds me of super glue.
I’m so sorry for the loss of your cat. We just adopted a stray kitten and are getting used to having a cat in the house. Sending you warm thoughts and a hug. Thank you for showing me this great pattern and for being a great mentor.
The tops are beautiful! The honesty about the fabric's difficult nature is appreciated. We always had tinsel on our trees in the 50s and 60s. By the 70s Christmas trees were so thick from how they were cropped/pruned, that there wasn't enough room between the layers of branches to allow tinsel to hang. Now days, I legally harvest a natural tree that would look great with tinsel, but in order for our tree to be chipped and turned into compost, every bit of tinsel must first be removed. Headache!
Recently rewatched the video where you got the 99k and it's so cute that you're undecided about which machine you'll be using in the future and now you love her so much.
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Our pets quickly become much loved family members. What a lovely top. So shiney :) I have sewn fabric that frays that easily. It is a race to sew it before it frays past your seam allowance. As for tinsel. You can get it all over the UK any time but espescially from September onwards. Though it does not mix well with pets.
Gorgeous...the fabric would have me tearing my hair out. LOL! When I was a kid, tinsel was the metallic garland hung around the tree. Ice cycles were made from real aluminum foil that we would drape on the branches one at a time, and it was beautiful. These days they are made from some sort of plastic and do not, in my opinion, hang the same. Enjoy the Memorial Day weekend, xoxo's Sandie
I agree that a thicker foil tinsel is much nicer to use on a tree than the plastic icicles you usually see in the US. I bought tinsel/icicles at a German Christmas market and it’s definitely some type of heavier metallic foil that hangs in a really lovely way and stays put in the branches. The plastic staticky kind really can’t compare.
That sparkly green is just gorgeous! But I think the silver top with the holographic skirt might have New Year's Eve written all over them. And I'm so sorry to hear of your kitty's passing. Our sweet fur babies certainly take a piece of our hearts when it's time for them to leave us.
I thoroughly enjoy all of these videos! I have learned SOOOOOO much! Your filming style is really easy to follow and techniques are well explained! So sorry about your kitties; don’t feel bad about mentioning them! ❤️
It is always a great day when I see you have recently uploaded a new video. I love love when you are busy designing and sewing! Question? What would your sewing machine be, what brand, model?
Hi Bianca, my first time to watch your video. I was taking a dressmakibg class as a beginner and i love watching your video. You you explain it on details. I am thanking you for that. If other fines it too long, dont bothered i’m sure lots of people would love your video specially for beginners like me. I have my top blouse, pencil skirt with pocket, a Trouser & top and a dressmaking. So i have 2 weeks to do it. I hope o can make it as at the moment i am taking/looking after my son who is a special. And since my brain is slowly to get it right away, i am happy that you are taking time to show to your video step by step, explaining in details. For that i am greatful and no.1 fan of you video. Love Tess K. 🤗🥰😘❤️
We use tinsel every year on our tree (yes, one can still buy it in the U.S). We vacuum it off before we throw the tree outside after the holidays. My condolences for the passing of your kitty. ❤️
I wonder if you used strips of a light weight fusible interfacing on the tinsel fabric to stabilise the seams you could get away with clipping your curves and not topstitching?
Not sure if I already told you but I got a sewing machine for Christmas. So far all I have done is stare at it. Do not know how to even thread it. I have watched a few beginner videos on here. Also, we got a new baby kitten. I love them both. But so far, the kitty has much more of my attention. Thank you for another great video. I will go on dreaming about how one of these days I will be able to sew like "The Closet Historian". ha Love the items you make. They are just beautiful.
I find that threading the machine is usually the hardest part! I HATE changing thread colors and avoid it whenever possible. I think B. said she only changes the thread on her serger every 6th months, white for summer and black for winter.
Sympathy for the tricky fabric. My last sewing project was the most obnoxious brocade from Joann. It frayed horribly, slipped around so much that straight cut lines were nearly impossible, pulled out at all stitch lines, and was generally miserable to sew with. I left a one star review online with a lot of technical details of what was awful and how I made it work anyway. I even got apology coupons from Joann after my review was approved. The only upside is that the fabric is utterly gorgeous, and it does have beautiful drape and movement when made up into a regency open robe with a short train.
Ohh Bianca I’m so sorry for your families loss.🙏🙏🙏🙏 I’ve had tinsel on my Xmas tree all my life! As far as I’m concerned it’s not a tree without tinsel. I save it every year taking it off carefully and putting it in a ziplock for the next year! 💕💕🎄🎄🎄
My Singer 99K is inherited from my Grandma P, and since she always zipped over pins, so do I. It’s never made my machine so much as blink. Local hardware store does sell tinsel, but never used it for the tree because cats. Do use it to make wand toys for interactive cat play. Sorry for your loss!
The sparkle ✨! I love how it came out in the end! I've considered working with tencel...but if it's like this rayon chirimen that I'm using to make a 1920s dress I'm gonna have a hard time. I think the wrap top w/peplum is really cute. I might have to try my hand at sewing this too ✨
Thank you Michelle! Alas Tencel rayon is fine, tinsel (like the kind thrown on christmas trees for sparkle) in a fabric is annoying www.google.com/search?q=christmas+tinsel Same word different stuff luckily!
Oh my gosh 😮! I didn’t even realise haha. Like the Christmas tree tinsel?? That sounds horrendous to work with-It’s super sparkly though…(I do like sparkle ) and I think it came out beautifully 💕
Hi, I seem to remember that you had a linen blend fabric in this metallic finish. It's a bit of a game for me to play spot the fabric from Mood. I haven't shopped around there for a while now so I guess there will be fabrics I haven't seen coming up. I don't buy the fabric btw, I just look at them. I did recognize the very textured shiny fabric of the tops you have been wearing the last couple of weeks. I've enjoyed seeing how they came out as they just showed them some time back in history. I know it wasn't yesterday that I saw them at Mood so that is back in history for me. Yours, Ann
We always used to have tinsel on our tree when I was a kid. We had a cat that always ate it so she had shiny & stringy poop during the holiday month. I never could get my parents to stop using it when she was alive...
Just my own preferred method,( because I am lucky enough to have a new serger,) I would have gone around the seams when bag lining and serged them all together. I have had some disasters with beautiful but ravel prone fabrics in my past.
This is one of your most extraordinary patterns! I truly adore this piece. Have you ever seen Agnes Moorhead’s classic film, The Bat? I think you would adore her costumes and the esthetic of the film a great deal.
As always a treat to watch. Your videos are how I steel myself for work. Do you have a link for the skirt you wore at the end? I’m fascinated by that flounced hem.
@@TheClosetHistorian yes that is the one. It looks like the gores fall in on them selves. On the video it looked like it was pleated and I could not figure it out. Thanks so much 💜
I’m so sorry to hear about your kitty. ❤️ My kitties are the reason why I can’t have tinsel on my Christmas tree. I own some tinsel and want to use it but I’d rather my cats not eat it haha They both already have kidney disease, the last thing I need is for them to have stomach problems from gnawing on the tree. They may be old but they’re still naughty!
So sorry about your cat. It’s so hard to lose a pet. I am re learning how to sew after 20 years of not, I am learning so much from your channel I really appreciate how you explain things. And… I got two new machines! So cheap I couldn’t pass the, up. One a singer 99 and the other an in table kenmore 1937. Omg I l❤ them so much. Can you maybe do a video at some point on sewing machine maintenance of your 99k?
I’m in love it’s y,our channel, I find myself ardently watching every thing you make and learning so much. I must admit, I’m an Edwardian gal but I do also love the 30s to the 50s. How eclectic. I can’t help but be fascinated by your shears, can you tell me what brand they are and I can maybe track them down in the UK. thanks for being you!
Thank you Bobbi! If you mean my giant pattern scissors, Macculloch and Wallis have similar-ish ones www.macculloch-wallis.co.uk/p/82634/hobby-craft/mw/wilkinson-pattern-cutting-shears-20cm but try searching "pattern cutting shears" and Amazon UK may have some too!
I have seen a vintage pattern online Simplicity 8127, I love the design but not sure how to draft the skirt pockets, I can't seem to get the draft right, any chance you might do a video for this, no worries if not, I can just do a normal pocket ❤
You are funny. Don’t change. A question. I bought a 1956 99k, and she has tension problems. Could I get you to take a picture of the spring behind the face plate on the back side of the tension knob?
Imagine an archaeologist finding this peplum top and making high faluting theories about the polyester fabric and how it applies to humanity in the 2020s!
No tinsel on our trees either, though I have almost always had a cat. I didn’t have a cat for one year due to being freshly married and living in a no pet apartment, we got a cat as soon as we moved and she’s moved with us for the last 14 years. Lovely top and that fabric is beautiful but looks like an absolute nightmare.
When I was child in the 70's we did have tinsel on our Christmas tree. Yes, it's very fun to just kind of toss it onto the tree branches, but it is a horrible mess to try to clean up. And yes, very bad for cats. Let me tell you, hairballs with tinsel are not nearly as pretty as one would think. My heart does go out to you that your other family cat crossed the rainbow bridge to join her littermate. Hopefully your parents will find a deserving and wonderful new furbaby to not replace the others, but to save more furry lives. 💜❤
Serging that fabric I'm wondering 🤔 if it would dull your knives faster? Tinsel went out of fashion when people realized there cats were eating it and pooping tinsel lol . Better to mourn in company. I'm not sure I would have cut off the corners of that ' weird' sparkly fab but fold each corner and press. Tfs💖🇨🇦
@@helenwood3199 I have no use for the blade so I don't bother. I only use the serger for encasing raw edges, nothing else. It's essentially an edge binder for me.
@@TheClosetHistorian Thank you for taking the time to reply. I've started subscribing to different historical-themed channels recently as inspiration for sewing and your videos are so well made, interesting, and inspirational! Thank you Bianca! Wishing you all the best for your house-hunting and all projects this year!
