The Oxford 1611 KJV, Quartercentenary Edition

A review of Oxford’s Quartercentenary Edition of the King James Version (ISBN 9780199557608). This large volume includes the text of the 1611 KJV, printed in a 10 point Roman font. Words are spelled as they were in the original KJV, so that Genesis 1.2 reads, “And the earth was without forme, and voyd, and darkenesse was vpon the face of the deepe: and the Spirit of God mooued vpon the face of the waters.”
Text is formatted in a verse-by-verse manner, and the words of Christ are in black ink. The Apocryphal books are included in a separate section between the testaments, as was typical in KJVs until the 1820s. No concordance is included in this volume, but there is one black-and-white map of Canaan.
This edition of the KJV includes a table of readings for Morning and Evening Prayer, used by the Church of England in that timeframe, and by KJV translators themselves. As a bonus, to give a sense for how the KJV translators worshiped God, I show the order for Morning Prayer from the 1559 Book of Common Prayer.

Thanks to this excellent review I received a copy of this Bible today. As you mention it is a big Bible for sure. Good for reading at a table or desk. Makes sense for a 1611 edition to be large. And you are right it is much easier to read than the Thomas Nelson 1611 as I have that one also. I paid about $57 for mine new and it really is an amazing Bible for that price or even much more. I am so happy with it! Wonderful paper. Such a pleasure to turn through and read. It is really like the 1611 edition I have been wanting all along. I only wish I had known about it sooner. Thanks to you I was able to understand what it was about and what a blessing it would be to have one.

This is such an affront on good taste frankly, what kind of sick mind takes a book beautifully set in blackletter and uses a font meant for carving into walls, I don't go around selling seemingly normal copies of Oxford Annotated Bible but then secretly put all the text into Tironian notes just to mess with the customer... audacious, great video though

I have this bible. So happy I opted to buy it a few years back! Initially, I had no interest in the included apocryphal books it, _but now_ these books' inclusion is the thing I value most about this bible. These writings have helped me develop a better understanding of Inter-testamental history and an appreciation for broader Christianity. Whether a person considers them 'canonical' or not, they _are_ edifying; I think the removal of these books from the Protestant bibles (in early 19th cent) is a real shame.

Dear Sir, Thank You for another great review. Interesting point below about Cranmer using Lutheran liturgy. Cranmer spent sometime in Germany under Lutheran influence in his earlier years where he also married. It was said that during the reign of Henry viii he kept his wife in a closet. Henry wasn’t a fan of married clergy. After Henry’s death Cranmer let her out during the reign of his son Edward vi. More to the point, Diarmatd MacCulloch’s recent work on Thomas Cromwell suggests Cranmer migrated away from the real presence of Lutheran thought towards a more symbolist view as presented by Zwingli (p 370). I guess Cranmer was a Baptist in the making. Rev John Wilderspin BA, ThM

Ryan - I have it in hardback, and it's well made on decent paper. Judging from the signatures, I believe it's sewn. The font is large, with uppercase letters being about 11 points (compared to Times New Roman), and lowercase being maybe 12.5 or 13 points tall. So I think the Cambridge BCP, enlarged edition, is an excellent choice. Another good BCP is Oxford's edition of the 1928 American book (not to be confused with the proposed 1928 British book). The font is around 12 points (9780195285253).

Ryan Santoni I would note that depending on where you live getting the American prayerbook may make more sense. The British 1662 BCP includes prayers for the Monarch and the Royal Family at morning and evening prayer, while the American 1928 BCP includes prayers for the President and the Governor of the state.

Seen this before & never knew what it meant or took the time to research it & here you are decoding with explanation, much appreciated! 😁 Just had to pause for the comment. Ok, now back to your video... Thanks for including the book of common prayer also. Do you know of churches or denominations that still use this format when they gather for worship?
@RGrantJones
@RGrantJones 4 года назад
Thanks for the comment, Tom! In the US, you'll find some churches -- usually small denominations like the Anglican Catholic Church -- that use the 1928 Book of Common Prayer (BCP). It employs Elizabethan language and is very similar to the 1559 book. In the UK, the Church of England used the 1662 BCP until a few decades ago. The Anglican Church in North America (ACNA) just developed its own prayer book. I've not examined it, but I think it has optional services in archaic English that are somewhat similar to those in the older prayer books. You can view it here: bcp2019.anglicanchurch.net/index.php/downloads/ .

@@RGrantJones Thank you for responding! If you'd like to know, the text of this Bible is most likely copied from the 1833 Oxford reprint of the 1611, which has that exact error (you can find it on Internet Archive). The Hendrickson 1611 appears to just be a complete copy/paste of the 1833 with the title picture added and Various Readings removed, but Oxford's Quatercentary Edition added the genealogies and maps, which were absent from the 1833, and (from what I can see in your video) changed the drop caps to be the same as the 1611. Someone had mentioned in an Amazon review that it was copied from the 1833 (which was how I learned about this), but the changes threw me off.

Examine this Bible very closely.. I purchased a 1611 KJV and had to rip out a page talking about "Easter" (Ishtar), which is pagan, and had an illustration of the baphomet and 2 snakes. I already knew the Bible was tampered with, but what this tells me is 4 things: 1. King James wasn't necessarily a good man and was used by God to authorize the translation. 2. People during that time were ignorant of deception. 3. Whenever God is present, satan isn't too far away (like when satan kept trying to ask God permission to break and eventually kill Job). 4. The KJV isn't perfect, but the spiritual "Meat" of it has been preserved. Remember God has control over ALL things. God Bless you ALL.
